M20,M21,or M22?

I'm gonna be looking for a new trans for the Nova. The old one is toast, broken ear on the case, used up gears and syncros.More to rebuild it right than to buy new with the good stuff in it.The trans that was in it I beleave is a M20 with 2 rings on the input.Wouldn't mind a M22 with a supercase. That would do everything that I could throw at it. Any advise is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If I had it to do over, it would be an M22 in the new case with the Italian gears. Let's see who can get the website first. I heard they had new ones for 1800. If numbers matching doesn't matter...

Complete new Muncie M22 1775.00 No core charge
http://www.tbtrans.com/muncie_4_speed.htm#new_unit

All of our Muncie units are built with the new muncie supercase,

super tailhousing, and the masiero italian gearsets, we also use the

new iron center midplate, along with the roller bearing sidecover

making this unit the toughest thing on the street!!!!!!!

I'm tossing this idea around too. I have the original M-20 trans in my 69 ElCamino, but if I were ordering the car new, I would have ordered the M-22.

I think I'll put the numbers matching trans on a shelf and stick a new M-22 behind the L-78. Gonna have to get a new clutch disc, and input shaft, but thats no big deal. Everything else, like the shifter, pressure plate, mount, etc can be reused.

Like Bill says, putting my original trans on the shelf would have been smarter 5 or 6 years ago. Now, just finished the second major repair/rebuild and I've been advised to "take it easy". That's going to be difficult with a new LT1 https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: M20,M21,or M22?

I purchased an M-22 Supercase Muncie a couple of years ago for my current Biscayne. The main reason I went with it is because of all the cars I've owned in my life, I've never had one with a real Rockcrusher in it. That was a missing part of my life that needed fulfillment! Now.......I don't know how hard you have your heart set on a new Muncie, but I do know that the next transmission that I buy will be a Tremec TKO 600. It's got the lower First gear AND an Overdrive in Fifth. You can put a stock style shifter on them, they are very reasonably priced, and nobody but you knows that it's in there! I've just heard too many good things about those Tremecs and everybody seems to often say that it was the single best modification that they've ever done to their car. Not trying to talk you out of the Munice, just some food for thought.

Re: M20,M21,or M22?

If you have to have a Muncie, go with a set of M22W Italian gears.

With the right set of rear gears it's better on the street/highway but you still get the strength of a M22.

[/ QUOTE ] I agree! The M22's even with the new gears and so forth are really not that strong. Besides I don't think the new Italian gear M22's whine like the old days. Tremec, used Jerico etc. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

My M22 Italian gears did whine but not very loud.

I have done some research on the M22W gears and they are supposed to handle 600HP...I guess I'll find out when I use them! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

[/ QUOTE ]I haven't read all the responses, so it may be already said. But, it depends on how much power, how hard and often you use that power, how sticky R the rear tires and what rear gears are in it. All this comes to play in how long the weaker M-20/21 will last. I like the wide, M-20 (lower gears) for most stuff around town that has less than 3.73 rear gear.

bad1racing 05-07-2010 03:36 AM

Re: M20,M21,or M22?

Ok so wide or close ratio? The Nova is street driven,375hp,headers,3.55 gears. The trans isn't numbers matching to the car so it's not that big of a deal about saving the old one.Just some spirited driving as every now and then I like to clean out the pipes if you know what I mean.

Re: M20,M21,or M22?

My take would be a wide ratio. If it was mine I'd be taking a long hard look at the iron case, nickel gear Super T-10's built by SK Speed (NY).

Re: M20,M21,or M22?

With your 3.55 rear gears, it's an absolute no-brainer to go with the 2.5 Wide Ratio Muncie. It'll make leaving stop signs quite a bit more fun. It's also supposed to be worth an extra 2-Tenths on the Drag Strip if that's your thing which roughly translates into 2 car lengths. And c'mon now........we've all won or lost a street race by two car lengths before!

Re: M20,M21,or M22?

I have 2 m22 one is from a 1970 camaro and its all original
with about 20 thousand miles on it.
the other one is an m22 also but with a new italian input shaft
and what a difference.
My m22 thats in my L78 chevelle is not orig to the car and I have the real one on the shelf. This orig Camaro trany howls just like a 747
jet flying over your head at 50 feet. The other one with italian
input shaft is no where near the same noise.
LOOOOOOVe it!!!
