Gas Tank Filler Necks: Anatomy/Physiology?

Anyone separated the top most piece of the filler neck on a gas tank? This is the piece that the gas cap fits in to. I am thinking this may be soldered in place and might not be to difficult to separate with modest heat applied. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Thanks for your input. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Gas fumes, heat source, what could go wrong. Will be looking for a glow to the south of my place.

Hay Sammy
Never messed with the top fitting, and I agree, it is soldered in place. I have unsoldered the pipe filler on a new tank because of alignment issues.
Don't be scared, just do it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Regular plumbing solder ( DO NOT try and use rosen core solder https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif)
Seriously, has this tank had gas in it ? Call me sometime.

Verne - I'll chronicle my "manuever" with photos and post, or maybe you'll hear about it on the 11 o'clock news!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif

BTW, the tank is off of the car. I will clear out any combustibles very thoroughly prior to the procedure. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Re: Gas Tank Filler Necks: Anatomy/Physiology?

I've just spent a lot of time researching "how to weld a gas tank" on the internet...

... it turns out this procedure has been mastered in other parts of the world, long ago.....

The most important part of welding the tank is making sure the fumes escape safely without igniting.

Therefore, the angle of the tank and the gashole is most important....

see below.....

Re: Gas Tank Filler Necks: Anatomy/Physiology?

No, why do you want to weld the filler neck?

Also, why would you bump it to 12.5CR? Man!! The 11.0 is quite enough https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

mockingbird812 03-17-2010 08:57 PM

Re: Gas Tank Filler Necks: Anatomy/Physiology?

Marlin - the tank on my Deuce is a Spectrum and the gas cap receiver will not accept a correct gas cap. Schonye is sending me the original top section of my filler neck and I will "graft" the old correct cap receiver on to my new tank.

P.S. I was JK on the 12.5CR. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Is it a Spectra Premium tank?

Re: Gas Tank Filler Necks: Anatomy/Physiology?

Sam,
I've got a gas tank for a chevelle where the seam between the filler neck and tank is leaking and needs to be welded. It too had gas in it but has been bone dry for a couple years.
If you want to blow yourself up "twice" I'll send it to you.

Re: Gas Tank Filler Necks: Anatomy/Physiology?

Sam, that's what I thought. Usually..... the cause for that situation is becuause the cap ring is for an EEC tank which used a different (non-vented) cap. The depth of the cap ring lip is different to prevent the inadvertent use of the wrong cap - and thereby potentially sucking in the tank!

My advice (albeit unsolicited!) is to use a Quanta tank! A little pricey, but.....

Marlin - the Spectrum tank looks real nice. Mikey promises me even a doofus like me can unsolder the old cap receiver and put the correct one back on. Me being a cheap-skate and all https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif , I gotta try this way 1st before buying a Quanta. BTW - I called Q and they would not sell the cap receiver separately to me. I got the feeling they do not make them there anyway (subcontractor?). https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Gas Tank Filler Necks: Anatomy/Physiology?

I had a tank with a small hole punched in the bottom once, and soldered a penny on to the hole.
That's the short version.

The long version cost me some eyebrows. Seems the metal actually absorbs a bit of petrol over the years. I completely emptied the tank. Let it sit for a day. Ran a garden hose in it until it overflowed for about 5 min. Emptied the water. Let it set til the afternoon. Set the tank up on a work bench, cleaned the spot really well, went to solder the penny on, and as soon as I hit the hole with an open flame.... BOOM. Of course, I was standing right over the hole for the sending unit.

Fortunately, it only slightly balloned the tank.

Re: Gas Tank Filler Necks: Anatomy/Physiology?

The Hippie makes sense since Quanta only sells Spectra,(Not Spectrum),Premium gas tanks so buying one from them won't resolve your problem.
Quanta Part# GM 46-D 1970 Nova Gas tank w/o EEC for $189 + ship...includes filler neck.

Conducted the procedure this weekend. Mikey didn't steer me wrong. Dry-ice worked like a charm and the original gas cap has been mated back with the cap receiver. Thanks for all of your input. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif I feel much better now! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif

P.S. the notion of an exploding gas tank made me think of the tank as a rocket ship, so I made a launch pad!https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DSC_0026-1.jpg

You can see the dry ice doing its thing here. By the time i was done the project and ready to mount the tank back on the Nova all of the dry ice had disappeared with no residue.
