Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
Ed,
Did your part number supercede another number? I can't find your number in my GM books. I have a GM heat riser but it has another number stamped on it. |
Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
if your looking for the heat valve on the passenger side I just bought 3 of them from the dealer. dealer cost is $39.83
#3969903 |
Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
I was informed today that the 903 is the only one avail. Im still reserching this - its for a 69 yenko camaro Feb built car. What im told the 903 is what is currently used for quite a while now.
As for the 977 part number - i was given this number as the correct one - so im not sure if its an old number or a mistake. |

Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
How do you tell which one you have? I have two saved for my resto. If I put them with the doughnut mount surface down on the table, one has the weight and spring on the left and the other has it on the right. The weight on that's on the left has p/n 3746844 cast into it. The other one looks new. Both picked up at swap meets 10-15 years ago.

Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
I have one and the exhaust manifolds that we took off my friends Chevelle back in 73 or 74 when we put headers on it. He was going to through em out so I keep them. The dates on the exhaust manifolds are K-7-9 October 7th 69. The heat riser only has a B34 on the balance arm. There looks like it might another number below that but I cant make it out. Is that the number on the bottom of the balance arm ? If it is I will try and make it out.

Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
I should have referenced how they sit. I put two holes toward me and one hole away from me. The doughnut surface is facing up. The rod that the flapper pivots on is about 3:30 and 9:30 (clock reference).
I found a third, weight on the right. One has the part number on the outside face of the weight, one has nothing. The one with the weight on the left has B35 and 2442 cast on the inside face of the weight. |

Here it is flat side up.
https://www.yenko.net/attachments/439367-flatup.jpg The other side of the same part that has the casting number 3746844 on the outside of the weight. At least this will give you an idea if this is what you are looking for or not. |

They both have 3746844 cast into the side of the lever block. Anybody ever figure out what these are supposed to go on? |

I'd like to know too, then I could dust it off and sell it.
Luckily it don't eat much. |
Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
Since this was brought up again I did some research on the valve with number 3746844 on the weight. It seems that the 844 number is just an I.D. for the weight and is not related to what the valve fits. The same weight is used on some 2 1/2" big block valves and some 2" small block valves. Back to the drawing board on this one. I think maybe I'll just put my 2 1/2" valve on ebay with an accurate description and send it to a new home.

Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
The 977 number supercedes 3887033 which fit '65 to '68 Camaro Chevy and Chevelle. The '69 396 Camaro used the 3940977 valve which was replaced by the 3969903 by June of '70. This came from the GMPartswiki website. Clint

Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
Did the BB use the 2" and the 2 1/2"? OR is it 2" for small block and 2 1/2" for big block?
|
Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
2" small block
2 1/2" big block plus 300 horse and up 327's and many 348's and I believe all 409's |
Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
In case anyone needs to know this info, I just happen to look in my 1969 Impala A.I.M. and found the part number for the heat riser John Brown posted a pic of and is the same as what I have 2 of... Part #3887024. I Googled the number and found this ebay link...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-GM-3887024-H...#ht_3282wt_1007 and this link that indicates what that part number was used on...HR024. http://www.hamiltonmanufacturing.ca/hrv.htm I hope this helps everyone out. If anyone has a used 3887023 I have the 2 3887024 I'll trade you. |
Re: BB GM Heat Riser # 3940977
Gary, the 3887024 valve on ebay is mainly for a small block. Look down further at the applications he shows from GM parts books. No doubt it's for a 2" exhaust system. The one I posted pictures of is a 2 1/2" valve for a big block. As I posted above, the 3746844 number on the weight is generic, same as the ebay seller says. It was used on both big block and small block valves.
