------GPS Choice------
-----Wife wants to get a handheld GPS and Im wondering weather a Garmin or a Magellon would be a good choice. We are limited to these two choices. It seems I have heard that Garmin is good but Jan says Magellon is a better deal. Can anyone out there give me a bit of direction???

I'm happy with my Garmin. |
Re: ------GPS Choice------
Sounds like a great Christmas present idea for my wife. What model Garmin would you recommend? Which one would you stay away from? Thanks!

Re: ------GPS Choice------
We started with a Garmin, then bought a Magellan and have since bought 4 more just like it...

Re: ------GPS Choice------
I too am in the market for a GPS. Rob in your opinion, why is the Magellan better than the Garmin? I have always favored Garmin but would like to hear the pros and cons. I don't mind paying up for one but would like one of the best.

Re: ------GPS Choice------
I thought you had "the best" GPS sitting next to you already. You know, that sweet female voice saying "Don't you want to turn HERE?", or "Are you sure you want to go THIS way?", or "Isn't it faster to go the other way?" Who needs some electronic gizmo that bases directions on FACTS?

[/ QUOTE ] That is why getting a GPS has helped my marraige last as long as it has. Now she just tells me what is on the GPS screen. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif |

[/ QUOTE ] Funny, we were just talking about this the other day and she says, "I don't care what you get just DO NOT get one with that irritating female voice telling you where to turn". I replied with, "Don't worry dear, the last thing I need is for you and a machine to get into a heated argument over directions. Besides, you are irreplaceable........" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif |

Re: ------GPS Choice------
I have been using GPS and mapping for over 10 years. I currently have A Garmin Nuvi 5000 which has the 7 inch screen. It has a lot of features. Previously had several Magellens, all were good. Latest purchase(April 2008) based on the fact that Garmin are quicker to update their mapping from Navteq, the main issuer of mapping software. I have not used voice command, but find the touch screen great on all models.I just bought a lifetime software upgrade for $99.00.
Also have a TomTom, they use their own software and their touch screen and memory are great. I find with all units, address selection can sometimes be tricky, say you are looking for an address that is a suburb, you have to know what the suburb name is to find that address. Garmin has a nice trip computer application that looks like a dashboard, cool features. Garmin also posts speed limits in the left hand corner of the screen, amazing how accurate it is. Select a model with an SD card reader. It allows you to enter your own data(address book) and download additional mapping. Some states have laws now banning you from mounting a device to your windshield (California),Choose your mounting device carefully. Similarly in Italy,we used Italian Language option,It was like a rolling tutorial.Try switching to Japanese just for fun!! |
Re: ------GPS Choice------
------Mike,,,Didnt you notice the "wife wants it" part??? She drives most of the time when we are together anyway (she hates my finely honed driving ability). As well, she has no sense of direction so she will find it useful. I on the otherhand have a great sense of direction but can barely turn on this computer. The GPS will undoubtably end up in her purse or car.
------Many thanks to all for the input. Shes read it all and will make her decision (like I would be involved in that)......Bill S |
Re: ------GPS Choice------
Garmin Street Pilot III
Magellan Sport Track Pro the second is great for boating.. wink wink |
Re: ------GPS Choice------
I recently picked up a Garmin Nuvi 765T. So far so good. I snagged it on sale a few weeks ago. Some Garmin's have live traffic updates via some FM signal. Other's offer it as well but they have a subscription fee. The 765T has bluetooth, a picture viewer, plays MP3's even. It got probably more than I'll use, but couldn't beat the price.

Re: ------GPS Choice------
I went and sucked it up yesterday evening and bought my wife a Garmin Nuvi 265WT for Christmas. Guess I'll have to wait a few days to see how it works.
