Vintage Pic
We moved recently and as we are unpacking, I've found a couple boxes of old pictures. This group seems to like to old school/vintage pics and stories, so I thought I'd share this one.
It's a picture of my dad's 69 SS 396/375 on the dealer lot. He ordered it while he was still overseas in Vietnam. He wanted to wait to pick it up until he got home, but the dealer called his parents and asked if they could pick it up early as it was becoming a distraction with a lot of people asking to buy it. My Grandpa, Grandma, and Uncle drove to pick it up. My uncle told me my grandpa was going to drive the camaro back and my uncle would drive their car back with my grandma. Grandpa made it about 6 blocks, pulled over, and told my uncle to drive it. "Piece of junk doesn't idle, runs like crap, won't turn, and looks like a John Deere tractor!" This is the only one I've found so far, but I know there are a handful of others. If there is interest I'll post em as they get discovered during unpacking. http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/z.../tn_camaro.jpg |

Re: Vintage Pic
Yes he still has it. It's like his first born child. It's only got 26,000 miles on it. He drag raced it with a 427 in A Stock and ET until about 1980. Luckily, he kept just about everything - which is downstairs in the basement. It's got about a dozen door dings from the double stall garage and us kids. The rear fenderlips were rolled under as well, but other than that it still wears its original paint, interior, etc.
I know there are about 5-6 more dealer photos and a few somebody took of it in action at Minnesota Dragways, if I remember right. |
Re: Vintage Pic
thats awesome........be prepared to get hounded for MORE PICS.....dealer shots, "in action" shots and how it looks today shots. like i said......get unpackin' already !!!!!

Man.......I love the "John Deere" comment! Never thought of it that way, but I guess it's true to some people!

Re: Vintage Pic
Wonder if he ever took Grandpa out for a ride to show what that "John Deere" was built to do?? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

He was at both almost every weekend until they closed up. I was too young to remember much, but he mentioned that the track schedules were a little different - so on a weekend they could hit both of them. Something like one had eliminations earlier and they could get down to the other track in time. If you find some, that would be great. He'd love it if I showed up with some old track pics. He has very fond memories of both those tracks. The ashtray still has a bunch of old timecards sitting in it. The nhra number on the windows was 5296 and I remember that the headlamps were painted green back then as well. |
Re: Vintage Pic
Sorry guys, I went through all the photos and only had a few more recent shots. The rest of the old photos must be down at my dad's. That is where I always thought they were - not sure how the one oddball ended up in my collection. The next time I go down there I'll scan them and put them up.

Re: Vintage Pic
Man I love that car; reminds me of a Rallye Green SS that was on the cover of Car Craft back in the late '70's early '80's. It sat just like your Dad's, had Cragar SS mags and you could see the white headers peeking out from under the car...............priceless.
Thanks for sharing the pictures with us; car looks great. |
Re: Vintage Pic
You say it is orig. paint. Can you get us pics of the black tail panel ? There is a long ongoing argument about if the tail panels are gloss black or satin type black. Looks glossy in the pic but info from your Dad would be a big help. Did he ever paint the tail panel ?
|
Re: Vintage Pic
How did it live through those tough Minnesota winters? He must have had another car to drive in winter.
|
Re: Vintage Pic
I'd be glad to take some pics of the tail panel - I'll send you a PM.
As far as the winters - yes, it only saw one winter and two summers before it was primarily a 1/4 mile car. That's why it only has 26k on it. It looks pretty good in the pictures, but it's got its fair share of bumps and bruises when you get up close. It's been well cared for, but it's still 40 years old. My father retired recently and finally started to fool around with it again, but other than the last few years, it wasn't licensed after 73 and basically sat parked and covered from about 1980 until recently. |

Dan was nice enough to send me pics of the tail panel of his Dad's Camaro. Per Dad the tail panel paint is orig. It looks gloss to me. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/434...91218-1221.jpg

Re: Vintage Pic
Dan's Dad is 100% sure it was gloss from the factory. Thanks for the input Dan as this kind of info is important. There are not very many orig owner low mile cars out there for us to get first hand info from.

Re: Vintage Pic
I love it!! And I can relate to "original" too (with pics of the car on the lot brand new!!). Thanks for posting.

Re: Vintage Pic
Cool I sprayed mine right then.
Hmm, is it a Norwood car or LA? |
Re: Vintage Pic
Here is the last batch. This is the stuff he had in a folder. Pretty cool for the guys that are into the original/survivor stuff.
There are still 2 more dealer shots and a few shots from MN Dragways - He said he'd poke around for em, but this is it for a while. We didn't spend too much time looking as I don't get down there as much as I'd like, so catching up was the priority. Front dealer shot: http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/z..._frnt_done.jpg Another rear dealer shot: http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/z...er_dr_done.jpg The window sticker from the car: http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/z...icker_done.jpg The actual checklist he and the salesman went through: (Station wagon checklist is on the back side) http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/z...ist_2_Done.jpg http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/z...ist_1_Done.jpg The sales brochure he looked at when choosing between a Camaro or a Nova: http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/z...ure_1_Done.jpg And last - the brochure he went to get after receiving the "John Deere" letter from his father and did nothing to ease his fears about the color. He said he picked the color from a picture of a car on the cover of National Dragster. After the letter from his father and this brochure, he was pretty worried it wasn't going to look like what he expected. It is hard to tell from the scan, but the color on this brochure, definitely looks closer to Deere green than the actual color of the car. http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/z...ure_2_Done.jpg |
Re: Vintage Pic
love this thread, such a cool car. Looks like a M20 was slipped in vs a an M21, and they slipped in the endura bumper (very cool) but did not do the spoiler package (according to the check off list). I have the same gloss on my tail panel (different black than the body though).
|
Re: Vintage Pic
It looks like it had wheel trim rings on the window sticker. I think that would be Copo style hubcaps with trim rings. Never seen those trim rings ordered on a Camaro before...Cool.

I have the same gloss on my tail panel (different black than the body though). [/ QUOTE ] Yes, there were a couple things not correct with the car, but since his parents picked it up a couple months before he got back, there wasn't really anything he could do. My dad was stationed in Thailand when he ordered the car, so he had to go through the military ordering processes, which he said was pretty rinky-dink. He did order the Endura bumper, but the tranny and spoiler options weren't right. Funny thing is, of all the stuff that wasn't right, he was most upset about the dealer sticker they put on the trunk. He talked to the dealer and explicitly told them no dealer stickers anywhere or he would refuse the car. It did have trim rings on it. Not sure why he ordered those, as he had a set of Cragar SS's for the car shipped home before he got back to the US. One of the guys he was stationed with had a brother back home that ordered a copo, which is what my dad originally wanted. The salesman told my dad it was impossible and the guy was just blowing smoke. Since he was told he couldn't order the L72 from Chevy directly, he tried to order a Nickey, but was told they wouldn't hold it that long and he would have to find someone to pick it up in Chicago when it came in - which proved too difficult, so he went with the L78. Since it was the first new car he ever ordered, he really wanted to pick it up himself. |
Re: Vintage Pic
I noticed earlier the residue on the trunk lid from the sticker. That had to be a thorn in your dad's side to see that after they took it off.
