1968 Z/28 garage find

I guess this would be considered a garage find. It was parked here by the current (third) owner in 1991. It has 67k orig miles and is supposed to have original paint and interior. I couldn't tell with all of the dust but I did see some lacquer checking. It is matching #'s. The engine was gone through by the second owner who also painted the engine and engine compartment in the 80's. He also added the dress up items. Interior is beautiful. I will be listing the car for sale in the near future after we go through it and get it running and stopping. I will post more photos later.

i'm no expert, if it has original paint shouldn't the paint stripes have oversprayed edges as opossed to what looks like taped off edges in the hood and cowl ares??

He stated that the engine compartment had been repainted.

Based on the cowl painted stripe color, I would say Van Nuys, that is the beauty of that plant - you KNOW the car is the real deal (assuming the cowl has never been repainted)

Here is a pic of the trim tag. The owner says the protecto-plate is in the console but I couldn't get the door open, too tight in there.

Pleasant Hill huh? I'll bet it cruised North Main in Walnut Creek 30 years ago.

You obviously know the area. From what I hear that was the place to be. Of course, cruising is illegal here now. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif

Here are the only pics I could get of the interior. I could open the door just enough to get part of the lens in. I will have a bunch of pics when I get the car in my shop.

I was there when the end came. The best Main in all of NorCal and its popularity killed it.

Do people still cruise the El Camino? When I was a kid back in the late 70's through early 80's I used to cruise there with my girl friend(s).

Re: 1968 Z/28 garage find

Too much traffic. Besides, traditional cruising died a long time ago.

Sorry for the hijack, BTW.

Hwy 1 does. When it goes by my place it is "PCH." Different name depending where you are at.

Re: 1968 Z/28 garage find

Maybe "coast" was the wrong term. El Camino real is can be HWY 1, 101, or its own road depending on where you are.

According to the phone calls and emails I got today concerning the car, it appears that most people from this board feel this way. I talked to the owner and we are just going to get it to my shop and photograph it as is.

Unfortunately, the owner has not given me a price yet. I think the car obviously needs a thorough checkout before setting a price. Its really hard to tell alot about a car from the front clip.:) I need to see if the paint is original and do a numbers check on the parts. I will also try to contact the first and second owners for some history.

I will post more photos when I get the car.

Are these cars that cheap? I am having trouble finding comparable matching #'s cars to show the owner.

Could you please send me links to the cars you have seen sell in that range so I can show the owner. Please make sure they are matching #'s cars because that is the first thing he will check.

Thanks for your help

Re: 1968 Z/28 garage find

Maybe not that cheap if the car has original paint, paper documentation and the numbers match up. The other factor is that the 68 Z28 has always been under valued compared to its 67 and 69 partners. Their are several factors that influence the disparity and I dont think its really a fair shake but that's what the market dictates. The other issue is that the seller would have been much better off opening the garage about three years sooner https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif I look forward to more details and photos! Great looking car....

Re: 1968 Z/28 garage find

The original paint and interior look pretty nice to me. Low milage, good original paint is hard to come by in a sunshine state like California. You have better chances of finding nice original paint in cold wheather states like ohio,Pa. It's a rs w/deluxe too,so 30-35 sounds lite to me.

Hmmmmm...
Seem's to me all this guessing really dosen't matter.
One of two things could happen owner will over price
the car and it will not sell.Orrrrrrrrr would be really
kinda cool have buyers post bids. Yeaaaaah https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

fbirdguy 12-03-2009 05:59 AM

Re: 1968 Z/28 garage find

It looks like I might have the car tomorrow, I will know in the morning. I will get pics as soon as I can. If the owner is going to want a bidding situation then I will just put the car on ebay. I understand that to post a car on this site you need to state a price, I agree and understand that. I just started posting, I don't want to get kicked off. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

i agree $35K probably low, i would think $40-50K, if all checks out correct.

Have prices dropped THAT much in 2 years? I sold my 68 Z28 2 years ago for way more than that. PM me if you want details on my sale.

WOW, All figures seem low to me. This is a rare car IMO. Just for arguments sake what would a L78 be worth, all things being equal?

You have to remember that ALL owners are somewhat bias myself included. We are all quick to point out that the prices have dropped substancially, but we somehow seem to think that OUR car is not as effected. Some of this is because as the owners, we KNOW what our car IS and that any other out there for the most part is an unknown commodity.

resto4u 12-03-2009 08:33 PM

Re: 1968 Z/28 garage find

The price i said, would be for resale. If i was to buy to keep, i would have a hard time paying anymore than 40K. We all know that taking a car out of storage can cost to make it road worthy again. Also the seller may not have been in the market for years, and not realize how the economy effects the collector market prices. Collector car sales are slow and difficult at best. Price drops here to sell, and epay and dealers, websites and newspapers. It is an incredible buyers market for those who can buy and ride it out. Roger

Here's the information on the 68Z I used to own. Keep in mind this was sold when the market was booming: 68Z ad from 2006. If you click on the link for pictures, I've added a lot of other stuff since then so pics of the Z start on page 5.

Re: 1968 Z/28 garage find

The only Super-Chevy car show I've been to was the Pomona 1998. I'm guessing 1000 cars in attendance, and not one original paint survivor. I'm guessing there's even fewer 11 yrs later.
Cars like this are the ones to own,and unfair to price it as a normal everyday car.

TDW 12-03-2009 11:27 PM

Re: 1968 Z/28 garage find

I have to chuckle here for a second. All the cars that I have been interested in buying sure haven't come down in price! I asked about this a few months back. Just where are all of these so called deals at? Any car that has been for sale on this site hasn't been a "steal", has it?
