67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
We just ran across this car, a 67 Caprice 427 with column auto. It has been in storage for the past 20 years. Still owned by the original owner who is ready to part with it. While I'm not normally attracted to this kind of car, I find this one to be strangely appealing due to it's unique color combo (Royal Plum w/Plum interior), originality, and of course the 427. But I have no idea of how to place a value on it. It was dark when we looked at it and it is stored in a dimmly lit storage bldg so we will go back armed with more light. The owner said the motor has never been out, which appears to be true. It is covered in dust so it is hard to tell if the paint is in fact original as the owner said it was. The interior looks perfect, just dusty. From what we could see, the undercarriage looks solid with just surface rust. The car has been in the dry SW all its life and has 47k miles. Owner didn't think they had any paperwork, but there was a pile of stuff in the glove box and I wouldn't be surprised to find the POP in there and a buildsheet somewhere. Any thoughts on what a fair offer might be on something like this? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

We are going back today to look again..if anyone knows someone that might be interested I will take a closer look at it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...e%20427/13.jpg |

Jacquie,
I just tried calling you. Dan. |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
beautiful Caprice, go for it!

Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Is that the ultra rare, factory installed, rats' nest under the air cleaner? (Has to be a rats' nest since it's a big block - only the small blacks got the mouse nests) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
Neat car with a great color combination. Buy it now! |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
I sold last year the twin to this car {Royal plum/plum interior except mine was just a 283 car and I have a Plum SS 427 car now. Im really into these plum cars. Plum interior was only offered in the caprice line and is very rare. That looks like a cool car. I got 10k for mine so we know this car is north of that at least. go for it. I know that id love to have it next to my 427 car! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif The only thing that looks wrong is the air cleaner.
|
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Looks like she is wanting 30k....I'm guessing that's waaay too much. I'll just have to try to talk her down..
|
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
$30K is way too much for that car.... keep pressing and good luck!
If she was smart she`d call the artist formerly known as "Prince" LOL. Dan. |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Well, had a good look. Orig motor, orig paint, POP. Owner wouldn't take less than 25k, so I'm on my way home empty-handed. It was a really cool car!. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif
|
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Sorry you didnt get it but to tell you the truth from my stand point I dont think 25k for that car is out of line. Its still a real 427 car in rare colors. the only thing that kills it for me is the chick stick and bench seat. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gifHe should have never showed you the car looking like that. Thats what makes it look cheap.

Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
If you get a chance to see the car again could you snap a picture of the vin, cowl tag, and POP? Like Don said this is a very rare car and I would like to add the numbers to my database. I don't think the seller is far off with a price of $25,000 if the car is as original as she says, but the bench and auto is definitely going to hold it back a little.

Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Is the Caprice a two door or four?
Is the T-Bird restored or original? |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
If I go back it will mean that I caved in and went back to pick it up. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif All I have now is a photo of the vin but if I do get the chance I'll get the others for you.
The Caprice is a Two-Door. The TBird was semi-restored. Top has been painted, seats have been recovered, AC and radiator have been added, engine is correct replacement. I have more photos of it. |

Before doing the deal it may be worth noting the build plant as there's always a chance it's a Canadian built car and documents available from GM Canada Vintage Services if so.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif ~ Pete |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
You mean this old thing with the 409?
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...0427/imp01.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...0427/imp03.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...0427/imp02.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...0427/imp04.jpg Ha! It's a 409 now...not so sure it's always been one. We still have to figure that out. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Either way it was a cool ride so we drug it home. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif |

Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Same w/ the '62 as mentioned previously regarding the '67, always take note as quickly as possible of the build plant of these big Chevys..
It's not often it comes up but depending on each different plant's ability to supply models w/ specific options quickly, satisfying demand sometimes necessitated Canadian production units being shipped to US dealers.. Regardless of the location of the production plant or ordering dealer, besides Canadian produced cars delivered in Canada being documentable today, <u>cars originally shipped either in or out of Canada</u> usually had their Vins and options recorded resulting in documents for those Vins available from GM Canada Vintage Services today too.. Cool cars Jacquie!. (both the Chevys...not the T-Bird) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif ~ Pete -------------------- I like real cars best...the REAL real ones! |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
That '67 is cool for its colors alone. The 427 only adds icing to the cake. I'll bet plum-color interior pieces and material is kinda' hard to come by though. Hopefully it's all there.

Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Thanks for the info on the Canadian cars, Pete. That's good stuff to know!
I'm probably going to have to just take my licks and go back after that Caprice. I don't really know why, but I just want it! Heck, I'll get $1000 worth of enjoyment out of it just cleaning it up and seeing what we've got under all that dirt. All that purple interior appears to be there and intact. The only thing I saw that needed attention was the chrome around the drivers seat. I'm definately not going to get rich reselling it...unless....Dan? You got Prince's number?? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif The 62...it's no 409 car. We took it out of the fumigation tank and looked it over a little. Just a nice SS Ragtop with 409 badging and some kind of a 409 setup. Looks like the low mileage could be acurate, mostly original paint and interior. The block is puzzling...the suffix code is 5J. What is that? The only casting we have been able to find so far is CFD on the back of the block - which I assume is Central Foundry Division?? We will look harder for casting numbers today. It will make someone a nice 409 wannabe driver to enjoy and take to local shows. Here's a picture of it getting a bath. Hope that Caprice cleans up as nicely! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...orums/bath.jpg Here's the engine compartment. 340hp - wasn't that in 63?? http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ums/engine.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../airfilter.jpg The trim tag and deck stamp. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ms/trimtag.jpg 5J - What could that be? Maybe a truck motor?? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2.../deckstamp.jpg |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
To each his own.
I have not kept up on the values of GM full size body cars so I could be totlally out of line here. I also think that you could buy a 1967 427/385 Implala SS car for the same or less than the price of the subject car here. Someone correct me if I am wrong. In the Mopar world we refer to the full sized cars (C bodies) as "sea" bodies, land yacths, or barges. They don't hold anywhere near the values of the intermediates or smaller bodied cars with the same engines. You can buy a 67 Coronet R/T with a factory 440/375 engine for $25k all day long. |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
December 2 of some year. I could see if it was a QJ, that would mean truck.
What is the casting numbers on the back of the block?? And head numbers? It would be worth pulling a valve cover to see. |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Although I don't know the 5J Suffix, some Canadian cars had unique Suffixes and we've discussed them here briefly in the past..
Most were Numeric/Numeric but some were an Alpha/Numeric mix.. The Gibb Novas had an Alpha/Numeric Suffix too!. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif ~ Pete |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Looks like a nice car
Trim# 815 = Black SS Convertible (bucket seat) Paint#948 = Honduras Maroon You are correct, 340 HP is 63-4, 380 HP in 1962 Here is a link on other identifying characteristics of a 409 from the 348-409 site. http://www.348-409.com/348409identify.html The most obvious is the fuel line, is it routed outside or inside of the passenger upper control arm pivot? Verne - correct me if I am wrong here on anything. Jake |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
There's a spider by the trim tag! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
Jacquie...the car looks great. Go and haggle with the lady for the 427 car... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
There are spiders everywhere Bruce! But they are all dead spiders now. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif I'm not scared of dead spiders....but what I AM scared of is that lady with the 427!! She's a fiesty one...and one quite capable of kicking my a**...which just might happen if I try to do any more haggling with her. She said FIRM and I do believe she meant it! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
I followed the link you provided Jake and I see a couple of things that would rule the 62 out as being originally a 409 car...It's an automatic and doesn't have a tach. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif As soon as we are able to get the casting numbers and head numbers I will post them and hopefully you guys can help us figure out what motor it is. Did the 62's normally have a buildsheet somewhere?? |

The royal plum part of the car also adds value in my opinion and its just my opinion. I sold a 66 ss Impala with a non matching 396 in it for 24k 5 months ago.It was a 4 speed but this is a nicer car with better options. |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Weird suffix.. Maybe this was a truck or marine block. It has definitely been repainted, so possibly somebody pieced the engine together.

Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
I wonder if the car has the original Delco Pliacells, since it has F41. That would be pretty neat. Congrats on the purchase! I'm happy to see that another 427 car is coming out of the woodwork. I would be happy to decode the whole car out for you if you would like.

Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Thanks everyone! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
I'll be sure to post dirty pics ... before she gets a bath. Thanks for the offer to decode Steve, I just might take you up on that. Here are a couple of blown-up pics of shocks. Can you tell from these if they are Pliacells? What is F41 option? http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...0427/shock.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...427/shock2.jpg |
Re: 67 Caprice 427 - Any thoughts?
Congratulations Jacquie. This car was discussed at the MCACN a couple of weeks ago and I think my guestimate on value was right in line with what this lady was asking especially with that color combination. That will be stunning when cleaned up. Glad you ended up with it. Can't wait to see the progress photos. Cool ride! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif
