Mine was a 65 Chevy II Nova SS. I paid $3oo for it from the local gas station owner. Born with a 194 c. i six (replaced with a 327/300 )and a powerglide. Sold it to a friend who put a straight axle on it and used it as a drag car.

Re: What was your 1st car?

Make sure you're sitting down to hear about this fine treasure. My first car was a 'Vette.

1977 Chevy Chevette - Rally 1.6

It wasn't the ordinary Chevette... it was a Rally! The Rally came with the fierce 1.6-liter 4-cylinder instead of the mundane 1.4. It had the special gauge package that even included a tachometer. Dark navy metallic blue and gold rocker panel stripes.

I had geniune imitation fuzzy sheepskin seat covers, a big ol' power booster equalizer / amp (you know... the $20 version you'd buy at a swap meet), 6 x 9 speakers in the hatchback area that were just stuck to the metal with the magnets on the back of the cones, and the coolest part of all.....

Genuine 4-lug Cragar S/S rims with white-letter tires! 50-series tires in the back and 60-series tires in the front.

Also, I quickly realized how convenient it was that the back seat folded down. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

’55 Ford – bought it in ‘63 at 14 with money made from pumping gas at a Shell station after school. $1 an hour off the books!
Primed it, dropped in a 430 Lincoln and a 3 speed, buckets from a Grand Prix and ’60 Dodge taillights!

Re: What was your 1st car?

My first was a 69 Nova I bought when I was 15. The car was just a "plain Jane" 307 car but had a 327 in it when I got it. The body/floors were rough, was nothing real pretty but all I cared about was going faster. I remember making weekly trips to Super Shops, Midwest Auto Specialties and Summit Racing in Akron spending my hard earned gas station job money on speed parts...

I added a nitrous power shot system, 411 gears in the 10 bolt rear, very good B&M shift kit in the turbo 350. Motor was mildy built with an Edelbrock Performer Cam, stock bottom half, stock compression/pistons, Edelbrock performer intake, Holley 600, Blackjack headers and Sonic Turbo Mufflers that turned down just before the rear axle.

I put the nitrous system on my senior year of High School. My buddy had a 72 Plymouth Scamp with a built 340 and nitrous. We had the fastest cars in our senior class. I remember street racing another buddy that had a 65 Mustang with a built 289/4 speed. I literally blew his doors off and remember smoking the tires and burying the tach at 8 grand with the NOS system on!! Car was really fun. I also had a big ole' Hurst Indy auto shifter sticking up out of the floor. Everyone thought the car was a 4 speed. The trans that was in that car was the best I ever had. That thing would literally slam into gear and chirp the tires between 1st and 2nd gear even if you were not "in it." https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

I parted the car out and sold it back in 2000 and kept the motor/trans. The motor is now sitting on an engine stand in my garage. Someday I want to go through it and rebuild it and maybe put it back into a Nova..

Thats how I acquired my first love and passion for Novas!! Here are some old photos of the car...

1957 Belair post with a 283 bored to 301, L79 solid cam, 2.02 fuelie heads, finned aluminum vette valve covers, holley 750 and a built aluminum glide. Marina Blue with black and silver interior. My dad and I took it apart and basically just cleaned and painted everything replacing what it needed. It was so solid though no metal work. Paid $750 for it!

Quite right.

Here's the Z11 back in 1977. All 145 pounds of me at the time (most of that was the hairdo). I had saved every dollar I had since I was born and bought it for $2,700. One of five kids, my parents were rather frazzled and could never keep track of who was who. I thought it was kind of weird when my dad OK'd the purchase and helped sign the paperwork. When we got it home my mom says to him: "You know HE is 14 and his brother is 16!" He just looked at me with that Al Bundy, head-shaking look and walked to the living room and sat down on the couch in front of the TV. My brother ended up getting a Daytona Yellow SS396 4-speed Camaro a month later. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

1969 Z/28 when I was 16 (1975). Cortez silver. Used to drive around w/open headers a lot. Sold it in 1977 for $1600 to buy a '77 Kawasaki KZ1000. Sounds crazy but they were plentiful back then - just another used car.

54 Chevy, 210, 2 door sedan. 235, 6 cyl, 3 on the tree. Found it on a car lot in 1962 for $475 negotiated the price all the way down to $450. Learned to power shift with the column shifter, shift lever eventually end up at the 12 noon position when in second. Dad asked me one day why shifter looked so strange, played dumb. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

Re: What was your 1st car?

My first was a triple black 69 Chevelle SS, I bought it when I was 16. Engine must have put out well over 400hp, I was always out of gas and the rear tires went bald all the time for some reason https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif. I blew it up doing burnouts during the homecoming parade, parked it wondering how bad I hurt it. Went directly to the homecoming game, I had a great game, caused a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and we ended up blowing them out. Wasn't until the next morning that I pulled the dipstick, what a sick feeling. Didn't get it back on the road for months, rebuilt another 396 in an open garage, then had to sell it to go to college. Bought a 76 Toyota Corolla, for college what a step down. I would've killed myself in that Chevelle though so in retrospect it was the best thing that could have happened. Wish I had that car back it was a monaco orange car originally. Fond memories of that car.

Re: What was your 1st car?

My first car was a black on black '65 Impala SS when I was only 12 years old. Cost was $50.00 and all it needed was a battery. Got suspended from Junior High School for driving my own car to school...

Purchased three more '65 Impalas before I turned 13 (white, yellow and green). Most expensive one was $75.00 because it didn't need anything. Played musical engines, tranys, interiors, etc. with them in order to learn about "Chevrolets". So much for matching numbers on those cars...

Gosh I miss the days of cheap solid classic cars.......
