yenko nova documents

I have been taking to nhra about getting the Yenko duece allowed in the class guide to race in stock eliminator. What they told me is I need some documentation as to what the copo was, what the number of cars were, and what was included in the copo. If anyone can help email me or pm. Thanks Jerry

I've been down this road before, but can't remember who it was off hand...the NHRA has the info, as they got it from me a couple years ago...you might mention that to them. But, we can try it again...I would be interested in knowing *why* it wasn't originally accepted back in '70/'71, as I believe we have copies of the originally submitted documents from Yenko Sportscars, Inc, from back in the day...but there's never been a classification????

Anyway, holler at me, with info on the who/where and we'll try again...

I think in order to run stock there had to be 500 cars built. Super Stock there has to be only 50 built. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Fred Gibb sent a letter to NHRA showing 50 COPO novas built in 68.

We have tried this b4, the car count was too low - and quite frankly, we are unable to produce a complete list of the 177 VINs.

NHRA has a disclaimer in the heading of the Stock & Super/Stock rules about limited production cars & their validity...it basically gives them the ability to allow/disallow whatever cars they want/don't want. I meant to look last night at my older rule books and see how far back that statement was in there, but I forgot. Here's how it's worded in my '09 book...

"OEM may apply for inclusion of any special production runs into the Official NHRA Stock Car Classification Guide. Special run must include a minimum of 50 units of an already accepted body style, need not me showroom available. Applications evaluated on an individual basis. Acceptance will not imply precedent."

A good example of this is the '98 LT1 Camaros...racers wanted the newer body, but not the LS1...so bingo bango, GM told the NHRA they built 50 Camaros and 50 Firebirds in '98 with the LT1...!

BTW, my memory is foggy, but I was thinking the last time we tried this, we got stuck waiting on something from the manufacturer (GM)...? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

Wait a minute, are you saying GM built some 98 LT1 Camaros and Firebirds? I've never heard of that before. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif

I don't think they ever built them, but more likely just told the NHRA that they did...that's how the game is played!

Don't believe the 1970 Deuces would be competitive in NHRA. Way too much horsepoer from the factory. There is only one 1970 Z/28 that I ever see in DIV-1. He runs C/SA. Even with the NHRA factor in their favor he has to run in the 10.50's and really can't. The index is 11.70. Except for one 1962 corvette 327/340, 4 speed that flies in DIV-1 its hard for the solid lifter sb's to be competitive in Stock/SuperStock. Ask the 302 guys. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Where would they throw the LT1 Nova, Sam? B, C, ?? I'm gonna guess you'd have to ballast the car, as it couldn't weigh diddly in race trim I wouldn't think??? 4-speed the better setup, I assume...????

Salvatore 10-28-2009 08:53 PM

Re: yenko nova documents

Yes, B or C I would assume. I guess a 70 camaro is heavier than the 70 nova. There is one guy who runs a 1966 L79 nova (post car), he is in C/S. Again, a nice guy and a nice car but not to competitive. The factory hp rating kills them. I think??, NHRA rates his 350hp to something like 290-300, maybe less I just can't remember what his window sticker said. The Q-jet, cast iron intake 350's are just plane killer in those lower classes. A,B,C Stock is usually a BB in a camaro or nova. A 350/295 camaro was running D/SA this weekend. He gets a little break also. I think NHRA rates him at 290 or so. Jerry M's 67 Z/28 is rated at 309 hp by NHRA. He runs D or can run C and that is against the BB's. He was going 50's all weekend and so were the C/S 375 horse BB's. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

What's the carb on the lt-1 cfm?

Kim_Howie 10-30-2009 08:16 PM

Re: yenko nova documents

Sam, the 302 & 396 use the same carb. The 350hp-327 use a SMALL HOLLEY 585 cfm can't compete against a 800 cfm carb.

Bruce B. @ NHRA is in my address book, so I shot him off some info (thanks, Pete!) Thursday...we'll see what he says.

Marlin: if you've got any LT-1 Nova related paperwork from the Chevrolet side, I'm sure it would help... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

NADA, https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif Just the reference to COPO 9010 - which is where we left off last time waiting for GM to give a detailed breakdown of the COPO and which vehicle(s) (Novas) it applied to.

If the '08 Cobra Jet 'Stangs qualified for A/ and AA/Stock, I don't understand what the problem is with an LT-1 Nova. It's not like there haven't been lots of super low production cars in Stock in the past. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
