Berger COPO Camaros
Can anyone tell me any info on these cars? How many Berger sold, how many shipments they got, number of RS cars, how many are still accounted for?I know some info is hard earned, and some of you might not want to say,but is there anything you could tell me? Also, what other dealers sold any RS cars and how many? Thanks!

Old racing buddy from many years ago, Ben Wenzel, bought copo there, were 20+ on the lot at that time. They sold a bunch,

Re: Berger COPO Camaros
Dana, the short answer is nobody knows how many COPO Camaros were sold by Berger. There were 3 at the SCR this year, a fathom green RS, a Lemans blue 4 spd car, and mine.
The RS car is a thing of beauty. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...5/SCR12016.jpg According to Kurt S. at the CRG, I have the last known Camaro ordered by Berger, built 05D. Please, tell us more about yours, and before anyone else says it, post some pics. |
Re: Berger COPO Camaros
Hi Andy. That green RS looks to be the one Nyle Wing restored. If it is,it's one body number after mine.Stunning car!You can see pics of mine on the supercar feature section on this website,it's the Sept. 2009 car. Please tell me about your car, pics also!

Re: Berger COPO Camaros
The 1969 Camaro Reference Book by John Hooper has an interview with Dale Berger, Jr. He stated that they sold 40-50 COPO 9561's, 10 COPO Chevelle's, and 1 COPO 9560 ZL-1, a yellow one.

Re: Berger COPO Camaros
Probably correct, D. Arons was plugged into Berger too.

Re: Berger COPO Camaros
Bob,
Ben's car was the low mile gold Copo Camaro, the only single Copo Berger ordered. Ben said he wanted the cheapest Copo on the lot of the 27 they had in stock in July '69! Ben said the car had been ordered for Arens/Booth but took to long to come in so they built another car to race. The car is currently in the Colo. collection of Wayne S. Mark |
Re: Berger COPO Camaros
During a recent conversation with Dale Berger he said there were 40 double COPOs ordered 20 at a time, the 1 single COPO, and the ZL1 car. The cars are February and May cars. Don't know how many are RS cars, but I have info. on @ 6 of them. When I bought my white car in Oct. 69 there was an Olympic gold RS car with Ansen Sprints I really wanted, but it was too expensive. That car went to an owner in Kalamazoo, and we ended up racing each other in the middle of town. There were @ 8 cars there left to sell, wish I had owned a camera! We have found the body #s are consecutive, per order, but the vin #s can be 100s apart. Example - my white car, and a Lemans blue car I owned are 3 body #s apart, but 263 vin #s apart. I have a friend who worked for GM in special order areas, and he explained to me why that happens. If interested, give me a call or a PM.
Hope this helps. |

[/ QUOTE ] Body numbers had nothing to do with production scheduling. They were assigned when a dealer order was confirmed [not placed] by Central Office thus reserving materials and production capacity. On any given day some if not all the Camaros ordered by any dealer had consecutive body numbers-check two of the Z/28s in JMs '69 book. While many COPOs ordered by a particular dealer [Yenko for example] do have consecutive body numbers some do not including Bergers. Even the 50 ZL-1s Fred Gibb ordered do not have consecutive numbers. The body number on ZL-1 #3 is 211785; ZL-1 #1 is 222002. #3 was the first ordered but the 3rd built. Claiming a Camaro is/is not a COPO based on body number only is asking for trouble. |
Re: Berger COPO Camaros
We are saying the same thing. when Berger ordered 20 cars they appear to have had consecutive body #s. No one is claiming you can tell a COPO car by a body #.

Re: Berger COPO Camaros
Maybe not you but others think it is possible.

Re: Berger COPO Camaros
With all the Copo body number groups found so far, it certainly helps to document a dealer ordered car that is found within the group of know dealer ordered cars. We have seen the groups of consecutive body numbered Canadian Copo Camaros, Yenko Camaros and other smaller dealer Copo Camaro orders such as Glockner, Frost, Berger, Byrne Brothers, Douglas, Dale, Jack Maxton and others. I don't think we have seen a non-Copo Camaro with a body number within a know group of dealer ordered Copo cars. Its been a good indicator so far.

Re: Berger COPO Camaros
That's easy to say because there is little data. When we have access to ALL 1969 Camaro orders from those dealers then we will know. Since that will never happen and probably 75% of 1969 Camaros produced no longer exist the data is likely gone forever.
There is also a good chance there is already one example. From CDN shipping info: xxx062 COPO xxx072 SS 350 xxx102 COPO xxx104 COPO |

probably 75% of 1969 Camaros produced no longer exist I find this statement kind of hard to believe. There may not be 25% of the 69 camaros left in the original condition but I don't believe 75% of them are gone (no longer exist). https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |
