Does this stamped #1 look correct for Tonawanda
1 Attachment(s)
Just curious, since I have seen so many variations of the number one stamped as 1 or I, does the 1 in the photo look correct?
Thanks |

restamped [/ QUOTE ] Thanks Barry. Have had some members disagree with you and show correct stamps with the same #1. Why do you think it is a restamp? |
Re: Does this stamped #1 look correct for Tonawanda
I's instead of 1's have been used/seen/verified many times on Tonawanda BB's

Not sure if this will help but here is a picture of my 327 engine stamp. This engine is in my 56 and is not original to the car.

I assume your not an authority on the issue; however, I appreciate the opinion. Received lots pictures to confirm the stamp is original. Including the one attached above. Thanks again. |
Re: Does this stamped #1 look correct for Tonawanda
How can anyone tell one way or the other when it is painted?

Re: Does this stamped #1 look correct for Tonawanda
Unless you're comparing to another pad pic with a very similar date and same suffix, there's no way to tell for sure. Add it that it's out-of-focus and painted and any guess is just that - a guess.
I have several close TKO pics, this one looks OK, but there's a couple of things that may be a problem. Can't tell without a better pic (preferably with no paint...). |

Here are some 0s, 2s & a 4 for comparison. These are confirmed originals.

Re: Does this stamped #1 look correct for Tonawanda
SGC,where are you located?
That is a known Tona assembly date for an L-78. The stamp fonts look correct, but there are some who have those in there tool boxes so take that with a grain of salt...Seeing the metal pad paintless sure would help add to it's validity. Which car did this originaly come out of?..a 1970 L-78 4spd. Nova or Chevelle? |
Re: Does this stamped #1 look correct for Tonawanda
-----Stamping appears to me to be correct. The second didget is an "I" that appears to have been damaged. One ear is gone and therefore it looks similar to a "1". Do I get a prize??? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif ........Bill S

Re: Does this stamped #1 look correct for Tonawanda
Looks good to me - I worked at the Tonawanda complex back in the day. Multiple vendors caused slight variations in charactors. The only way that I know of to be positive is to have access to known, real stamps that were just prior and just after this stamp. If the charactors are the same - you can be pretty sure that it's a legit stamp. Al Grenning has a huge data base, but he only certifies Corvette stamps. Jerry probably has a good data base for Camaros.

Thanks all.
Appreciate all the feedback. 4 speed Chevelle built 11A out of Atlanta. Motor still in car. |
Re: Does this stamped #1 look correct for Tonawanda
One thing is sure....That is that nobody can give you a for sure answer based on the picture you supplied. The paint needs to be removed to really see the stamping. I would not make a decision to buy or not based on that picture.

Re: Does this stamped #1 look correct for Tonawanda
The one with only one leg on the top is fine, I have examples of the same "I" in my files. As far as the entire stamp, yes, remove the paint. Broach marks are a large part of the original heritage of a stamp.
