Dave's New COPO
This is a continuation of this thread:
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat...ad5f#Post419191 A new member here, Dave McGaffe, (Grumpystoy), with a lot of help from the master of COPO location, Doug Perry, scored this barn find old racer at an estate auction in Stuebinville, OH. Parked in a garage untouched since 1974, this is a true Old School drag racer. Sometime later on, Dave will fill in more of the details. First is a picture of the original owner of the car, taken yesterday in Stuebinville. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ofDSC04658.jpg |

That car does not even look like it needs to be waxed. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Ohio has got to be the capital for Copo camaros! Good going Doug! Re: Dave's New COPO
Here are a few more from Stuebinville,
Doug Perry with the original owner. It looks like Doug is heaving a sigh of relief that he didn't drive that rollback three hours for nothing. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ofDSC04656.jpg The original owner got behind the wheel one last time before hauling it back to Columbus. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ofDSC04663.jpg The original motor was swept off a track early on, but this is a rat that can be brought back to life. Check out that cool can, looks like it was borrowed from a still. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ofDSC04665.jpg Good bye Stuebinville, Hello Columbus. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ofDSC04667.jpg |
Re: Dave's New COPO
Dave and Doug stopped by the Bob McDorman show last night before stashing it in the Batcave. Here are a few more shot that I took, with a little help from Doug. I've known Dave for a long time, and he looked like a proud poppa.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...man9-09002.jpg Believe it when I tell you, Doug was just as excited as Dave. He can't wait to start taking parts off this car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |

Some more from last night. Doug pointing out some details in the paint job.

A few more...
Looking in from the back window. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...man9-09011.jpg It's an X44 car, but with a deluxe interior. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...man9-09012.jpg View from the cockpit. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...man9-09015.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...man9-09016.jpg |
Re: Dave's New COPO
I love it when a good plan comes together and it found a great home with Dave. Now give it a good wax job, go through the motor and get ready for next years reunion so you can slam your own gears... Mark

The paint job is first class, for 1970. With a little love and a lot of buffing, this hood will shine. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...man9-09019.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...man9-09018.jpg Last one, the name says it all. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...man9-09007.jpg If I get the All Access Pass to the Batcave, I'll keep everyone posted on the project. When this thing is done, look out! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif |

Re: Dave's New COPO
Fear not, Darren. This car was born to run, and will be reborn by Dave, who can't wait to get this car back on the track.

Re: Dave's New COPO
Hello everyone,
Thanks for checking out my NEW "old race car". I would like to thank Doug Perry for hooking me up with this one, he is the go to guy if your looking for these rare cars, especially the history on them. With Doug's "CSI" tactics we virtually knew all the history on this car before we got to the auction , and that was in a matter of days. Thanks again Doug. I would also like to thank the original owner whom we met at the estate auction (2nd owner died), His name is Doug E. ,a great guy and he will obviously be a wealth of knowlege on the car since it remains almost 100% as he built it back in 1970. I will have the car "RACE READY" at next years SCR and hope to have him there to meet everyone and let him take it down the track. He also has video of the car back in the day that I would love to share with all of you , I will see what I can do on that. Dave |
Re: Dave's New COPO
I'm with Darren. I would clean and detail the car, make it run and drive, and leave it as is. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif This is an unbelievable find!

Re: Dave's New COPO
What a find......congrats
|
Re: Dave's New COPO
Awesome! I love that 60's "mod" graphics/lettering style. Totally cool paint scheme on a totally cool car. Can't wait to see this one in the flesh. Congrats!

Re: Dave's New COPO
That would be a shame to restore that car. Nice find
|
Re: Dave's New COPO
Are there any pictures in as found condition?
|
Re: Dave's New COPO
I'm sure the locals thought you guys were crazy for bidding what you did on that car. I know the conservative mentality of that area all too well... the smile on Dave standing next to the original owner tells the story. |
Re: Dave's New COPO
That's one of the coolest finds I've seen in a long time. It doesn't get much better than that. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif
Just be careful if you decide to buff it. Nothing abrasive or all that 60's 70's clear laquer will be on the pad. |
Re: Dave's New COPO
I do restoration work on the side on these cars for a few select friends of mine , but no one needs to worry about me making this one all "original" again. I can appreciate a restored nut and bolt car like everyone else , but my first love is a day 2 car ,this one will get cleaned up , go thru the drivetrain, brakes ,etc., and be making pass's with the wheels up and very DEEP into the 10's next year! I can't wait to "row" thru the gears on this one.....

Re: Dave's New COPO
At the auction we had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with the original owner Doug E. he is from the Cleveland area of Parma Heights. As you see the photos we did ABSOLUTELY nothing to the car except load it up and head back to Columbus. Doug E. worked at Myles Engineering back in the day his best ET. was an 10.66 @ 133. He left the original motor @ Thompson Speedway in pieces. The original selling dealer was Rodenfels Chevy on Pearl Rd. The rear 1/4 panel if you look very closely still has his name. Talking to the nephew and brother of the second owner, Joe only took the car out 2-3 times when he owned it and parked it in 1974. The car did track time @ PID, Norwalk, Bristol,Rockingham,Lakeland Florida, Beckley WV. Dragway 42. Doug E. recalls racing against Larry Morgan back when he ran Fords. The car became a racecar the day it came home to Pleasant Valley Rd. in Parma Heights. The mileage is 100% correct...just look at the pebblegrain in the steering wheel. It WILL NOT get restored....only freshened up and doing track time at National Trails....Dave's shifting and tuning ability is pretty damn good. He told me he always wanted a 69 Camaro Racecar...well here it is. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Now let's talk Dave into getting this car to Chicago in November and Carlisle next June, BUT only after he takes care of a few other projects. Right Frank and Caleb https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: Dave's New COPO
Congratulations.. that car is really neat. What class did the car run? It looks like it just stepped out of the early 70's with all the period stuff. Talk about time machine!!

Re: Dave's New COPO
Awesome ride Dave!! Very Cool Time Capsule!!! Can't wait to see it live....
Rodenfels was originally located at 6376 Pearl Rd. in Parma Hts., Ohio and sold several COPOS.. The dealership became Bill Doraty Chevrolet and then sometime in the late 80s or early 90s Integrity Chevrolet took over and moved into the building.. The dealership is now defunct.. I don't know what will become of the building.. Probably be knocked down... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif Doug asked me if I would slide over to the old dealership location and take some pictures of same.. I did this last night.. It's funny, I talked to the original owner of this car on the telephone and he stated that he remembered the dealership was next to a little greasy spoon restaurant called the Whip which is still there and in business... He stated his wife had worked there during the time he bought the COPO. Sorry to HI JACK the thread Andy......... Enjoy..... Rich https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3144.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3145.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3146.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3152.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3153.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3154.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3156.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3159.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3160.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3162.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3163.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...icture3148.jpg |
Re: Dave's New COPO
Here are a few more details on the car.
06A X44 57 fathom green 712 deluxe black int 427 copo , m22 trans(when new) 4,104 original miles on the body all original sheet metal except hood 427 , aluminum heads , dominator intake and carb, chevy cable drive dist. , curved neck radiator, chrysler "HEMI 4 speed crash box" (the tranny of choice back in the day), original BB cross member, dual lakewood drive shaft loops, BE 12 bolt with summers bros axles, lakewood traction bars, front disc brakes were replaced with drum (for less drag Back in the day), dual SW fuel pumps, the sub frame and bumper brackets have been drilled with holes to reduce weight,no spoilers , still has all the original carpet and a lakewood bolt in roll bar.The original owner had the car painted as you see it when it was one year old, and for an old laquer paint job there is no checking at all from not seeing the light of day for almost 35 years. As far as the class it ran in , he raced at AHRA and IHRA tracks and I don't remember the what class he said but from the way the car is set up it looks like an NHRA A/modified production car. But I will find out from the owner. |
Re: Dave's New COPO
Probably A/MP in NHRA trim would be a tunnel ram set-up. Caleb's car is a perfect example of an A-B/MP car of the early 70's. Those cars ventured into Pro Stock on some weekend invitational meets at the local dragstrips. Looks like an NHRA SS/D car without the aluminum heads. Can't remember if you could run aluminum heads on a 427 in NHRA SS back then on a camaro. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif
