Charley,
Very Pretty car. Are you having this built to OEM specs or how you want it? If OEM, there are some things that don't appear correct in the pics. Mike |

Re: Hemi Challenger progress

Re: Hemi Challenger progress
When I was growing up everything was Chevy. I guess I had a thick head because no matter what it looked like, if it wasn't a Chevy, It wasn't anything. Too bad. Because if I would have opened my eyes and saw something like this,I would have sold my Chevelle.(well lets not get crazy) But seriously, That is one great looking car. Nice job.

Re: Hemi Challenger progress
Car was owned by member PPPJJJFFF Patrick Fillette for 20 years but he is from New York so I don't know if it is the same car.
|
Re: Hemi Challenger progress
One thing is the grille, maybe it is the pic but the grille center looks to be painted black, if so it should be plain anodised aluminum.
Just nitpicky things like that, still a gorgeous car. I am a Mopar OE judge so things jump out at me. Mike |

Re: Hemi Challenger progress
Charley,
Looks to be complete lack of factory undercoating in the front fender wells. Lower control arms are completly cosmolined, the arms were dipped by the manufacturer up to about before the date coded rivet. If you want to email me more detailed pics I'd be happy to offer my input. Mike Mancini |

I think SE & Challenger base model surrounds were argent or astrotone. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |

[/ QUOTE ] I realize that, otherwise it would not have its own option code. But some guys ordered N96 and got N94 whether it was factory assembly line dyslexia, shaker shortage, or otheerwise, it happened. I've spoken to at least two guys who it happened to. But that's a topic for elsewhere. |

Re: Hemi Challenger progress
It wasn't a shortage issue, it was a product liability/crashworthyness issue involving risk of decapitation of people in the passenger compartment due to a lack of preexisting crumple folds in the brace section under the hood. The later hoods had them. The earlier ones didnt. The Challenger was far more prone to this effect of sheering the hood hinge bolts and shoving the hood through the windshield because there was no front upper header panel like on the Cudas. So when the Challenger ran into something head on, the first thing to get hit was the front leading edge of the hood. This was the "shortage" - until they made the running fix on the hoods, they didnt get put on the cars.

Re: Hemi Challenger progress
Thanks Steve. Yes, that is my understanding as well from Daniel Banker's excellent research on the subject.

Chrysler put the crash creases in the hood sheetmetal while GM on the 2nd Gen Firebirds and Camaros put that giant bolt with the slot in it, on both sides of the top of the cowl to engage the matching slot in the hood if the hood sheared off the hinges in a front end impact. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7003651.jpg |
Re: Hemi Challenger progress
The dates of the "lack of availability" of the Shaker option because of said product liability are generally agreed as Mid October 1969 to Mid April 1970.

Why this is the Best Musclecar Forum
I love it that a "Chevy Guy" offers up progress pictures of his rare and stunning Mopar, receives deserving kudos, and pointers all delivered politely and receivesd graciously.
In addition we all benefit from info about why this or that happened and when. I did not know about those cowl bolts on the Camaro, I always thought someone forgot to put the rubberbumpers on top. Thanks for sharing this info. Great looking car Charley. Paul |
Re: Why this is the Best Musclecar Forum
Neat car Charley - thanks for sharing the resto. Also great to hear from the pros with regard to the details. My '70 Hemi Challenger is also in resto - please keep posting pics (I'm taking notes). My car has the original grille in it - painted flat black in the center. I thought that it was factory, but must have been sprayed over back in the day.
