Original License Plate Cleaning??
Hello,
I just purchased an original set of unissued 1970 TX plates for my Chevelle. They are in unreal condition except for the yellow tint that is on them. They are suppose to be an off white, but now have a yellowish tint to them. The guy that I bought them from told me to leave them out in the son for several days. That has not worked. I tried cleaning with dishwasher soap also. Does anyone know how to get this off? Thanks for the help! |
Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
I heard the same thing also and it did not work for me either. I have a few sets of never installed personalized "YENKO" Texas tags from the late 70's that were for YS-070 that are either completely yellowed or partially.
I wish I could help. |
Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
Problem is you guys were using the TX sun. Now things may have a different outcome if you use an AZ (Supercharged, solid lifter) sun! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
Have you tied a dab o' fine rubbing compound on them?.

Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
I have not tried compound or any harsh cleaners yet. But that may be my next step. There has to something out there to take this off.

Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
bleach or chlorine?
the sun may add to the problem ... |
Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
I think the yellowing is caused by the aging of the clear on the plates?
Try some mild rubbing compound in a small area... |
Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
Ok, I will try that when I get home. Thanks for the help!

Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
Hit it with some clay, then some mild polish. If the backside has color, make sure you're not removing paint. Also, any product with excessive silicone is not ideal for lacquer. 3M Hand Glaze should work...

Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
Personally, I would think of the yellowing as 'patina' and leave them alone.

Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
That is what I thought too. Plates would look better in a 40 year old patina, not brand new! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
They look plenty old with the lettering and light scratches. But the white is yellow and would look 100 times better if it was not as yellow....I can deal with a little.
I will try the clay to see what that does. Thanks again!! |
Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
If you want, send them to me, I'll clean them for free and send them back.

Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
Dan, Thank you so much for the offer!!!! Last night I used the clay bar and some light 3M compound and got them looking a whole lot better. I think if I go over them a few more times I may be good to go. But if I can't get them looking any better I will take you up on your offer https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif |
Re: Original License Plate Cleaning??
I am not sure if your state plate has a reflectorized coating as the 'white' background (1970)?
Washington plates went reflectorized- white background in 68. When I tried to 'clean up' the yellowish aged plates no real chemical or mechanical means, was found that effectively produced great results. P.S. The biggest problem here is cleaning off the MOSS & Slime from the plates, it is amazing we do not have barnacles on em! |

Post some pictures of your progress and of course, I'd be glad to help a fellow member out.
