yenko guage question

I just bought a Yenko guage as it was explained to me. The guage goes from "." - 8000 does not have a "0" but just above the dot or "." it has a small 500. Questions are:
1. Is this guage rare?
2. How much is it worth
3. What year would it be from?
4. Do I need a sender with this guage or can I hook it straight up to the engine and power using the 4 wires it has (red, green, white, and black)?

Re: yenko guage question

Can I assume you're referring to a Stewart Warner Tach?

Maybe this model?

That is the late model pedestal and was not available in 68,69, or 70. This earier style(http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=250460972702)
was used on the 68 and 69 Yenkos. This is a shameless plug since it is my auction. Both the tach posted earlier and the tach I just posted require a 990 series monitor.

In fact, now that I look at it the Windex and SS hood in the background on the first picture look familiar. I think they are both my tachs. A double plug I guess.

Guilty! I swiped your photo. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif

Just thought it might help answer his question.

Re: yenko guage question

WOW 142 views and only 4 replies and most not on this guage from 2 people in this forum. That tells me that this guage is rare and probably worth a couple hundred dollars since few know much about it. Anyways, It was mentioned that I need a sender unit to make this work. I am not certain but when I took the back cover off there is already electronics there. Why would I need more? doesnt sound right...

Dennis,

I was just poking fun. Swipe all the photos you like https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif. Darren, Both Dennis and I tried to help but you did not give any more info. Here is a link to some 970 series tach instructions I posted on this site for just this type of situation:

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat...true#Post363743
The tach will work without the monitor for a short time, then it will most likely fry. I have sold those panel mount tachs in that style from $50-$200 on Ebay. It really depends on timing and condition. The $200 one was NOS and was the tach I got those instructions from.

Re: yenko guage question

Jason,
I am just getting a little frustrated at how hard it is to find info on these tachs on the web. The tach is not even going into a Camero it is going into my 72 plymouth satellite with electronic ignition (yep I am a mopar guy) I really want to make this one work and do not want to fry it. Thanks for the diagram, looks detailed would all this work on a plymouth satellite with a chrysler 400 (electronic ignition,) or should I send it to one of those people and have them change out the guts in it? expensive...

What's a Camero? C'mon now, it's a poor man's Carvette. Everybody knows that!

Re: yenko guage question

Yes, it will work in your car. You wll most likely need a SW 990D transmitter. Does the mopar electronic ignition have a "Tach" output like a GM HEI?

Re: yenko guage question

professor james I said Camero sorry I meant to say camarro.

Jason, not sure if it is the same as a gm. I did rewire the whole car with a painless kit. My current cheap tach is tapped off the coil (green) do you have this sender that I need? If so are you selling it? Further what's in this box anyways?

Yes, I am selling senders. The senders basically have a few resistors inside them. Here is a link to the ad I have in the for sale section:

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/show...e/3#Post407785

As you can see, the senders are as much or more than the dash mount tachs.

Xplantdad you were never part of the thread so it should be easy for you to move on.

Jason you did help a little but I think maybe you had no further interest in helping after you figured out I had little interest and paying $200 on a hunk of crap that I can make for $20 and a trip to Radio Shack. I found a schematic that gave me a little insight to what’s in this little magical box. A couple of capacitors, a relay, a couple of batteries. Its nothing but a protection circuit for the gauge, and your right without it I would fry the gauge. The signal from the coil does nothing more then activate the relay. The batteries run the gauge. What I cannot figure out is why they did not use a 555 timer circuit instead, that’s right they did not invent that yet. Anyways no hard feelings and don't hate me because I am a Mopar guy...

PS I ran spell check just for the professor

Re: yenko guage question

Wait, so I didn't answer you in less than a day and because of that I was not willing to help? Give me a break. I have now decided not to help because you are being rude to other members and I. I do not have a repair schematic for a 990 transmittion but I can tell you the one you have is wrong. A 990 sender does not use batteries, a EB sender does among other things.
