Its nice to revisit the origins of your addiction
I went down to visit my parents for the 4th and as in most days the conversation turned to cars. My father (obviously not a smart man) always has to remind my mother that the only reason he persued, dated and finally married her was the fact that she drove a Corvette and a Bonneville Convertible to High School (hmmm I don't remember driving a Corvette to High School ... it was more like a 76 Monte Carlo https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif) We got to talking about car docs and my father was like oh I have every order form, invoice, pop and manuals for all cars I owned and your grandfather somewhere. I had to do a quick count of the beer cans as my Father, Grandfather and I have been into cars together for as long as I can remember and talk of all these docs has never surfaced. Needless to say the hunt was on .. a few hours later we found the first of three boxes (still looking for the other two) Posting some of the highlights ....
Wish we still had this one ... http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...6/IMG_1073.jpg 57 Vette ... http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...6/IMG_1076.jpg http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...6/IMG_1080.jpg In November of 61 he bought a RPO 353 = 275hp Fuel Injection engine and again in May bought another 61 RPO 354 = 315hp Fuel Injection engine ... http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...6/IMG_1074.jpg http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...6/IMG_1075.jpg 63 Vette ... http://i317.photobucket.com/albums/m...6/IMG_1081.jpg Amazing they kept eveything on these cars - next project is to upload some of the pics and find the other two boxes for the late 60s early 70s - very cool stuff. |

Funny letters bitching out GM on the 61's Fuel Injection system ...

Re: Its nice to revisit the origins of your addict
gr8 stuff
NCRS should read those to make sure the tops have odd paint blobs on them plus the FI should have metal filings in the fuel system in order to be "correct" LOL |
Re: Its nice to revisit the origins of your addict
Wow! That's some neat stuff! That one letter is pretty harsh but it's understandable after spending that much money. Now these are the people that really remember how these cars really were, not through rose-colored glasses 40 years later, and they watch the televised auctions nowadays and just wonder how such troublesome cars back then can command such crazy prices today!

Re: Its nice to revisit the origins of your addict
It'd be cool to track down where the car is now and reunite the paperwork with the current owner(s)!

-----What a string of cars!!! Your Dad had to be an absolute car nut. Do you or your Dad remember if and how he got the fuel injection problems straightened out??? Im from that general area and there were some good injection guys out there. Frost Chevrolet in Wellesley had a good guy, I believe.........Bill S

Re: Its nice to revisit the origins of your addict
He ended up meeting John Calley (sp) over at Porter Chevy in Cambridge (raced a black 63 over at Thompson Speedway) and he worked his magic on the cars https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

Re: Its nice to revisit the origins of your addict
Well an amazing update to report .... the two 61 vettes are alive and well ! The RPO 353 is in Florida and believe it or not the RPO 354 is located 25 miles from me .... just insane. I have gathered a bunch of cool day one photos along with some more paperwork and the original owner’s manuals. I think there are a few happy vette owners tonight
The location of these cars were from an anonymous source so please don't ask how they were located - thanks in advance! |
Re: Its nice to revisit the origins of your addict
-----"Porter Chevrolet". Theres a dealer name I have been trying to remember. Porter had one of the 201 65 Z16 big-block Chevelles. It was yellow with a black gut and no vinyl top. It was still at the dealer in 66 as I almost bought it. Car was priced pretty cheap but my Mom said "why get a year old car?) so I passed. Wonder what happened to it???.........Bill S

Re: Its nice to revisit the origins of your addict
Bill - My family is still friends with some of the guys from Porter back in the day so I'll ask and see if they remember anything on the car - you never know https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
Bruce - The local 61 owner says the car is perfect - can't wait to see it. I have a great picture of my mom in that car day 1 when I meet the owner to get him the paperwork I'm taking my mom and will take a picture of her in it 48 years later should be cool. I have left a message for the owner in Florida but haven't made contact yet but plan on trying again this weekend. I'll post some of the pictures this weekend - |
