SW heat gauge
 

I am trying to get my vintage SW heat gauge to work in my chevelle.I hooked it up to the Gm heat switch and It does not work. I grounded the gauge and the needle went right to the end ,so I know that the gauge works.Does this gauge need
a special heat switch???

It needs a S-W 362 series sender.

What size pipe thread do you need, or what is the diameter of the hole, in inches? I have some new old stock S-W 362-AJ senders that are 3/8 pipe threads, or about 5/8 or so inches in diameter for the threads.

the dia. of the pipe thread is 830 thousands of an inch at the cylinder head head and it is 14 threads per inch.
If necessary I can step it up from 3/8 pipe to 1/2 pipe if it is the correct sending unit for the gauge.

You need part number 90-975. Don't worry about it saying 100-240 degrees, because the Deluxe gauges just leave off the number 60 down at the bottom of the gauge. I didn't know what size hole you had, but I'd rather see you get the correct sender instead of having to use an adapter. He needs a 362-AH. They're brass and brass won't weld itself to an aluminum intake.

What is the difference between the 2? They look the same externally except one looks to have a steel body and the other is brass.

The difference in the numbers is brass vs. steel body. The boat versions are brass, but steel welds it self to aluminum through corrosion, so I wouldn't use the steel ones for that reason. If you have a cast iron intake it wouldn't matter though.

Yes John the steel ones do weld themselves to the head
I have a bb head that a steel one welded itsself to the head and you cant get it out I need to drill it .

John one more question. Is it necessary to put a plastic washer on the threaded part before I put the wire on the terminal??

I wouldn't think they should need a plastic washer. Mine just have a brass flat washer and a copper lock washer, but just about anything that won't work loose should be o.k.
