L78/L71/L72/LS6 143 "blueprint" camshaft interest?
Any of you L78/L71/L72/LS6, big block Chevy guys have any interest in a '143' blueprint camshaft? Immediate or otherwise??
Due to Crane's recent bankruptcy, we're looking into the feasibility of a high quality '143' camshaft to fill the void...whether it be for restoration or high performance [Pure Stock, street/strip, etc], this cam should fit the bill. Do a quick search on this site about the performance of the GM/Crane 143 camshaft, and you'll see why it's absence leaves a lot of us scrambling for a replacement...all so called 143 "blueprint" camshafts are not created equal! I know a couple of guys are in the middle of engine builds as I type this, so if anyone else is gonna be needing one shortly, *please* send me a private message ASAP. But, if there is any other future interest, please reply... CONFIRMED - as of 4/28/2009 *Ken Tibor - cam + solids *Jeff Connor - 2 cams *Greg Roberts - cam + edm Peter Simpson - cam *Dustin R Vine - 2 cams + 1 solid + 1 edm *Dave McCutcheon - 2 cams + 1 solid + 1 edm *Nils Julin - 1 cam *Jim Sullivan - 1 cam *Greg Simmons - 1 cam *Donnie Cornelis - 1 cam + solid *Tom Howard - 1 cam *Philip L Soucy - 1 cam + solid Joseph Guerra - 1 cam + solid *Ed Lis - 1 cam + edm *Grady Burch - 1 cam + solid *Tony Wonch - 1 cam + edm *Tony Ragla - 2 cams + 2 edms Jim Weaver - 1 cam + solid *Elon Block - 1 cam Warren Friedrich - 1 cam + solid Chris White - 6 cams + 2 edms Jim Lerum - 1 cam (NOTE: priority shipments are in RED, confirmed payments denoted by *) |

Jim Just to add to what Rob was discussing above about camshafts. We have Cam Doctored what has been "143" GM reproduction camshafts and they are different. We are talking about a lack of design and quality control in a nutshell. Crane will not come back as they are in liquidation at this time. The thought of not being able to get the $130.00 to the door special that they once offered no longer is available. When you find something good we like to try keep it. That is why this thread was started. |

rob, are you saying that another manufacturer may take up grinding a 143 dupilicate cam. [/ QUOTE ] Yessir, that's what I'm saying...at least if there's enough interest and we press the issue, anyway! We thought there would be some interest, but just wanted to do a quick "heat check" to make sure we didn't go through all the trouble just for the heck of it. We can't divulge a lot of details until we officially get the ball rolling, but our objective is to have a no-fuss 143 replacement that you can put in, know it is what it is, and quit worrying about it. Chuck, thanks for passing the word... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

Rob:
I'm in the middle of machining my L72 and just spent half the afternoon talking to my buddy about what camshaft we should use now that Crane is gone. I need one but I was hoping to find one on the shelf somewhere. Please let me know. The engine will be going back together in May. Ed https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif |

Re: L78/L71/L72/LS6 143 "blueprint" camshaft inter
Ok, we talked to the cam guys, and it looks like we're ready to rock! They're giving us a pretty darn good price [well below custom price], but the more folks we get on board the cheaper it's gonna be...so, I'm gonna do a running list of "confirmed buyers" in my the first post @ top of this thread...so all you guys that are ready to pony up please chime in. Rough guesstimate says they'll be ready in 2-3 weeks, and as of now I *believe* the price is $180, but that was for the minimum, so the more of you that holler the cheaper they'll get for everyone...

Rob, I just bought a Comp Cams 3863143 replacement cam for my L78. Specs all look to be identical to the GM cam. Part number is 11-106-3. What do you think? Are these not any good? Thanks Mike

Thanks Mike [/ QUOTE ] As with the rest of the non-GM/Crane 143, the specs might *look* the same on paper, but the lobe is different...Jim proved this on a cam doctor. A few of us Pure Stock guys have tried other brands, and we all went back to the GM/Crane unit... As Darren said above, this will be American made, and each one is gonna be held to super tight tolerances. |

Re: L78/L71/L72/LS6 143 "blueprint" camshaft interest?
That really is an incredible camshaft and it's hard to believe that it debuted during the first year of the big block in 1965! Now I still have the original one I took out of my virgin LS-6 and it's stamped on the end 3904362. I guess they changed the part # in 1970. I've run high 11's with that camshaft. It's truly the musclecar camshaft where you could drive the car to work during the week and still turn very respectable times at the dragstrip come the weekend.

Re: L78/L71/L72/LS6 143 "blueprint" camshaft interest?
A couple of things:
1) those of you in the middle of engine builds & needing your cams *yesterday*, PLEASE drop me a private message ASAP so we can get your cams out first. 2) also, would anyone be interested in a set of lifters to go along with their new cam? I know a few are gonna do their own thing for lifters, but thought I'd ask since they *could* be available to those so inclined. |
