Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Do the Nova guys out there know if the gas cap pictured above will have problems fitting correctly to a repro gas tank?
|
Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Sam, Should fit your tank with no problem. Grady

Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
I know first hand that the cap will not fit the reproduction gas tank that I just installed. I bought the Canadian made tank produced by Spectra, and the stock cap will not fit. We tried a bunch of aftermarket caps and none of them would fit. So I contacted the seller, and was given a part number for the correct cap, available from them and through NAPA.Anyway, the cap says that it is vented(Non EEC) and it fits great.Filled the tank, and after 24 hours in 40 degree weather took the cap off. Gas and vapour shot out the filler neck like a hose. On a hot day, the built up pressure would have blown back through the carb for sure. The only solution was to drill out the vent. Not stock, not pretty and not as designed. I am tired of repop parts that do not fit or work as they should.

Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Thanks Marc - that has been Schonye's experience too.
Am curious Grady (or M22Mike if u have yr ears on). You sound pretty sure that the cap above would fit the repro tank. Are u referring to yr beautiful '69 burgundy L78 Nova? |
Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Sam, I have a reproduction tank in the burgandy Nova. I purchased the tank from Quanta. We had an original cap replated for the tank and had no problem with it fitting. I did not think that the 70 neck was different. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Jack Seymour has experience with this I believe........
Seems to me that the Spectra Premium neck can be modified to accept the correct cap. I can't say why Spectra Premium neck isnt correct for 70??? |
Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Is it normal for a "Vented" cap to allow pressure build-up. My 70 Chevelle does it. Should I drill the cap or just leave it alone?
|
Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Mine builds pressure ocassionally. If it gets to be a problem I just loosen it a bit. Just a personal opinion but I wouldn't drill an OE cap.

Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Don't drill your vented caps... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif...I am quit sure they are designed to allow some positive pressure in the tank, it helps the crappy little fuel pump work better.
When I have been driving Black Beauty... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif...and pull in for gaz, I always crack the cap for a few seconds to allow the tank to vent off. Never tried it after the car has set all night. If you and try blowing through the hole on the back of a vented cap you will notice it requires a small amout of effort before you get any flow. The vented cap also has a negative pressure relief built into it as well. You can check this function by sucking on that little round thing in the back of the cap.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif For you guys that are not in touch with your masculine side or are affraid of germs, use a Mighty Vac... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |

Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
I have a Spectra 70 model tank in my 70 Nova, and only the EEC cap (the wide one) fits, a standard cap will not fit, pain in ass. Somebody mentioned a fix for this,? I'm all ears and eyes, let me know
|
Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Jim,
You must have had the exact same experience I had. We are not talking about a little pressure in the tank. That "vented" cap seals the tank tight. When I remove the cap you can see the entire tank "flex" as the vapor escapes. For sure you would blow that back through the carbs on a hot day and you'd be stuck. I too would like to hear from someone who has bought these parts and found a solution to the problem. Marc |
Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Sam, These are the pic's of the cap that Mike had replated for the burgandy Nova.

Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Grady Thanks. My internet was down last eve, sorry I did'nt get back to you sooner. Great pictures. See if you can jog Mike's memory on the fix he used to modify the next and or cap to allow a suitable fit.

Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
the replated cap has the embossed letters vs the new nos caps are stamped - i believe this is the same for camaro.
Sam, id replate your cap - but still need to solve the vent issue.. |
Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
In 1970 there were 3 different Nova tanks.
A. the 68 - mid 1970 straight neck vented (used at least until Jan 1970) B. the 1970 angled neck vented C. the 1970 angled neck with EEC Looks like a mid year change even though Quanta only lists the angled neck for 1970. And they used the same picture for the B and C and the 1971-1972 Nova. Which vented tank is causing the problem? Straight or angled? Grady yours should be a straight neck. At first I noticed occasional high pressure in my original tank with a after market cap. This was not there with the original. But does seem to be going way with time. I am having the original replated for other Nova. Greg |
Re: Gas Cap for '70 Nova
Greg , Yes my tank has a straight neck. The only thing I thought would be the same as 70 was the ring for the gas cap. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Grady
