Fuel Pump Metallurgy
I have a 68/69 vintage 40170 fuel pump that requires a tig weld on the mounting flange. Anyone know what this flange is made of? Looks like magnesium.
Thanks, Rick Thayer https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Fuel Pump Metallurgy
Alum. If welded slow and welded just the back of the flange, you should be ok. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Fuel Pump Metallurgy
Has it developed a crack near one of the bolt holes from being over torqued,or does it have an irregular mounting face created during casting?

Re: Fuel Pump Metallurgy
Reportedly it was misinstalled years ago and cracked on the inside of the left hand bolt hole, so it was removed and never used (NOS). Not a problem to repair, just wanted to get set up with the right gas and wire for the metal at hand. Any thoughts are appreciated. Cumby says Kim is no wizard!!!

Re: Fuel Pump Metallurgy
Weld it, then machine the back side. I wouldn't weld the front, nobody will see it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Rick!

Yes it is.

Re: Fuel Pump Metallurgy
That fuel pump has an aluminum housing and will be fairly
easy to repair. That's why I wanted it... Lucky you https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif Nuch |
Re: Fuel Pump Metallurgy
I'd be concerned about the heat messing up the diaphram. Make sure you keep it cool.

Re: Fuel Pump Metallurgy
If this topic has run it's course, perhaps I can migrate to a similar issue:
How is/are the fittings attached to the anodized portion of the pump? I have an NOS pump for my deuce, and after installation it leaked like a fountain, (Pittsburgh WoW show!). Turns out, the 'block' fitting has a small split where it attaches to the base, apparently not completely attached when initially assembled. I've thought about epoxy, but would like a more permanent solution - if any?? |
