68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
I actually find this car to be pretty darn cool. Not to mention, fairly rare with the 4-speed and 8-lug wheels. Wish I had the $ at the moment--I'd try to throw a bid in at the last min....

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Cool car but these days I think he will have a hard time getting in the mid 20's like he wants.
|
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
I think these cars are pretty cool, but don't pay too much. Also, don't fall for the owner's puffery . . . "I think this would be an HO car except for the AC . . . " I mean, WTF?

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Real nice Poncho. But not a good time to sell.

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
It's one of those cars that would cost $50K "to restore", but isn't worth $20K "restored". https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif Not many repro parts available for these cars...
That being said, these ARE cool cars!!! They weren't popular back in the day though. The totally redesigned 1969 Grand Prix sold over 3 times what the 1968's did. The 1968 was considered a "big fat turkey" even by one of the Pontiac chief engineers. Some issues: The car sits about 2" high in back, about an 1" high in the nose, but not a big deal. Also, not sure if the 1968 Grand Prix would use a GTO gear shift knob. I'm also a bit skeptical of how he says he "doesn't think it's an HO car", when he has the PHS, and the build sheet. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif He should KNOW it's not an HO car. I also like the his answer to the question of whether the engine has any leaks (there's anti-freeze under the intake). He says "no, the anti-freeze just puddles there after it's shut off." Ummm...isn't that a leak? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif By the way, that's NOT "just a washer" as he states (sounds like what someone from a 1970's sitcom would tell someone that wants to buy their house, and there's water pouring out of a faucet). Yes, it's in inexpensive rubber washer that it needs, but the intake has to come off, new intake gaskets, and lots of scraping. Overall though, you don't see many of these cars around (although there IS a red 68 Grand Prix that attends one our weekly cruise nights around here!), and they are definately attention getters, just not as desireable as a 69-72 Grand Prix. I would guess $18K-$20K if it was indeed restored properly. It looks very nice, you don't see very many 4-speeds, but he has to find the right buyer that has been looking for a red 68 GP 4-speed to get that price. |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Yeah, I definitely didn't think he was trying to pawn it off as an HO motor. If anything I took it to mean that this definitely wasn't one as it had AC.
Well, in any event, if it was going for 15-18, I might try and grab it. However, he states he wants "in the 20s" in an answer to one of the questions, so I'm guessing that's unlikely. |

I just thought it was silly what he was saying. . . who knows what the original owner would have bought if he didn't order AC, ya dig? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif I once looked at a triple black HO stick car. Didn't have the money, but I always have kept that car in my mind. Would also love to have a '68 Catalina post with the same engine! |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Seller : "The only reason I think its not a HO 428 car is because you could not get air conditioning with the HO option."
He's leaving doubt. He's misleading the buyer into the possibility that somehow, someway, the car mysteriously has HO manifolds, but the 428HO option doesn't appear on the PHS. He should have just said "I installed HO manifolds, it's a regular 428 4-speed", and left it at that. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Mike I Own the GP and Im absolutly not trying to lead anyone. Ive listed the engine code and horsepower rating and showed my docs. You looking into it too much. I was just saying that with the amount of options this car and Ive never seen another one even close to That I would have bet it would have been an HO car if the selling dealer didnt want air conditioning. Thats just an opinion. Its still a beautiful car that I traded for a while back and if its not worth much then so be it but its still a beautiful car with no issues. As for the washer it leaked a little becuse it sat for months. Now that I fired it up and started usuing it swelled up and does not leak. Please dont bash my car!! Its really a nice car and I dont like people insinuating things. It does not have mysterious manifolds The last owner put them on with the Pypes system Its that simple and thats what i said in the ad. Ive left no doubt as ive talked to alot of people on it and I tell it like it is. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif Did I talk to you today??

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
I don't think any of us were saying you were being misleading. I thought it was puffed up a bit, but perhaps it was just awkwardly written? Seen too many people on eBay trying to be vague about things.

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Hi Don, no it wasn't me that you talked to today. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif Let me back up for a second. I did NOT bash the car! In fact, I stated I thought it was very cool!
Your last comment, "I was just saying that with the amount of options this car and Ive never seen another one even close to that. I would have bet it would have been an HO car if the selling dealer didnt want air conditioning..." I tell ya, I did not read it that way in your ad! I read it as if you didn't know WHY it had HO manifolds, and I think others (in this thread) may have read it that way too. But I understand your comment now, that you're guessing that since the car was ordered fully loaded, the only thing missing was the HO option, possibly because the owner wanted a/c. I just didn't read it that way in the ad, and if I (and others in this thread) read it that way, then I think the wording could be changed to be more clear, that's all. A little constructive criticism. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif I didn't understand (or I misunderstood) the comment about the anti-freeze leak. A buyer asked if there were any leaks, and you had said "no, just the leak under the intake to timing cover." You do appear to be very honest in disclosing everything about the car, and I applaud you for adding the potential bidders questions (and your answers) to your listing! It's obvious you DO want to be very upfront about this car. My only criticism would be to change those few things in your ad. And as I said, this car would get a LOT of attention at cruise nights (the 68 GP around here sure does!), and I hope this Poncho goes to a good home. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
I appreciate that Mike. Its a shame It has i great home here but with things the way they are Im forced to let at least 2 cars go. I spent a ton for the impala I got a while back and funds are low. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Kinda surprised at the comments. Most of the folks on here seem pretty humble and respectful. I see nothing at all that seems misleading about the ad. If he was trying to be cute, then I suppose he wouldn't have posted the docs. Just trying to put the car in the best light, I suppose. Probably should have fixed the intake leak, before posting the ad. Pontiac intakes gasket jobs are so simple. No end rails to worry about and the distributor can stay put.
Having owned a 4 gear '69 SJ428, I have a soft spot for these cars. I don't like red cars, but that's just my own opinion and doesn't make it any less of a car. I always like big cars to be dark in color or black. Almost like seeing a fat girl with a bright red outfit. Most wear black for a reason, makes them look smaller. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif MB |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
I still think it's a nice car.It has a lot of WOW factor.

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
1st of all, I think it is an awesome car, very nice, would love to own it even though I too, am not a fan of red cars (well said above).
but I also agree with the others about the "puffery" It simply reads bad and raises doubt and detracts from how nice the car is on its own merits Case in point is the other car listed by the same seller: "Chevrolet : Impala 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS 396 4 Speed runs Like a SS 427 " In the description it says : "It runs and sounds nasty with the feel of a 427-425 hp engine!!" The GP is not an HO and the SS 396 is not an SS 427 or an L72 solid lifter car, the descriptions would read better if the "fishing lures" were left out IMHO |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Don, very nice car and good luck with the sale. I didn't have any problems with the wording, the docs speak for the car.
I'm a big fan of 4sp big cars and this is the highest optioned 4sp '68 that I've seen...https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...-I-Have-It.gif Mike |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
A big Poncho w/ hideaways and a stick is a great combo...good luck w/ the sale!.
The only thing cooler for '68 may be the Canadian Grande Parisiennes we got up here...B-Body Ponchos w/ hideaways and factory Chevy MK1V's!. http://mclellansautomotive.com/photos/B12386.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif ~ Pete -------------------- I like real cars best...the REAL real ones! |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
When I lived in Detroit a few years ago, I looked at a '68 2+2 ragtop with a 427/385 4-speed. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/drool.gif
|
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Ah, that must have been really cool.
My "first" car was a 1970 Sport Fury, so I have an affinity for big cars. Plus they're so roomy. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif Had bucket seats, Rallye Wheels, console. Sadly, it was an automatic. I swear if I ever find a 4-speed, I'll do whatever it takes to get it. Also a big fan of the '69 Biscaynes, Impalas & Caprices with 4-speeds. |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
A '68 L36 2+2 Ragtop would surely be a low build but w/ the stick too...Whttps://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gifW!.
Do you remember what color it was and if it had hideaways?. I wonder if any of the same combo were ever built w/ the L72?https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gifhttps://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/drool.gif. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif ~ Pete |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Jim, In all do respect both those cars run and sound better than original! I have seen and heard them both at least a few times. In the fluff department..........don't know many sellers that don't try to "fluff" a little. As long as it isn't lies or misleading than a little "fluff" is part of the deal. After all, the sellers want to sell their cars and the market is tight. They are both real nice cars, especially for that money. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Jeez, another big red 4-speed car. Too bad doesn't have a 427. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Truc...A1%7C240%3A1318

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Don:
I can't believe some people are picking at your GP because it's red. When did a real red car with black interior and a 4-Speed become an undesirable color combination? That's just crazy. Anyway, it's a great car and good luck with the sale. For some reason, I don't think the fact that it's a red GP is going to hold it back. Just my $.02 Ed |

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
I am surprised by all of the key punching going on about the adds the Fluffery and color. What ever happened to hey Check that out Neat may not be my first choice but WOW its a 4 speed and has the biggest engine you could get ,neat options and No vinyl top , interior is to die for and the paperwork is bulletproof. Find another one, Pontiac fans might know somebody named Jim Matheson ,he had a silver one optioned close to this he had for years it sold for upper 30's not too long ago, its in Houston. No its not a Judge, Trans Am , or other neat pontiac but how many of You own one or drive your cars??? As for the Fluffery maybe the new adds should read its got a 396 it runs like a Pig and the lexus or SUV that you guys drive will blow its doors off. Whats wrong with letting some one know it does run better than a stock 325 car NOTHING . Thruth in Advertising goes all the way from the Whitehouse to the Tv and Internet Everything there must be the Whole truth and nothing but the truth !!!!
Get real, You guys thrive on finding Something to pick on to Fuel your soul Why ? Who knows but one I've seen that car and its a Nice car as is the Impala and Don's straight up about his cars. Its Funny when one of the big Guys here list a car here in one of the forums nothing but Praise but God forbid one of the less know members does the same either you get NO replies or interest. I personally have listed several neat cars here priced fairly never got the time of day Sold them elsewhere for more money . I thought this website was about sharing interest , knowledge and taking the hobby to a better place Not Yea or Ney . I think everyone should put their cards on the table whats in your Garage !!!! then well see who's pushing keys or the envelope. Charlie I'm excluding You because I've been in your garage and a SUV would of out run the yellow 69 the day we took it for a ride !!!! Jim https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif |

Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
I feel as I should chime in here seeing as I posted this in the first place and it's starting to get a little out of hand. My intention for the post was to get a gauge on what the car was worth, not to bash it. I obviously really like the car, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered posting.
I'm not really sure why people took the "HO" comment and ran with it. I never, ever thought he was claiming it was an HO, and as I've already stated, I thought his intent of stating it was the opposite--to say it's definitely not an HO. In any event, Don, I apologize if this has caused you any grief. It's an incredibly cool, rare car, and I hope you get for the car what you're asking. I merely posted to gauge the value of the car, as while a car may be rare, it doesn't always translate into high $. Overall, I think people are overreacting on all fronts. In any event, good luck with the sale. It's a great car. |
Re: 68 Grand Prix--yay or nay?
Good luck with the sale Don.I'd be proud to have your Pontiac in my garage. You've taking some grieve for nothing but trying to sell your car.Not fair.
