08 Cobra Jets in Pomona

How cool that Ford even made these 50 cars. I just heard that one ran I think in A/S and ran a 10.05. Damn thats moving. Mopar has has a race/Challenger. Why can't Chevy? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Why do you say they are dead stock? Are the motors are sealed? Competitors are not allowed to tune the suspension?

it's as stock as Stock Eliminator allows

which makes it even more impressive in A/S...

I read on one of the Ford sites that the computer set-ups in the cars that have been sold will not be updated till after Ford debuts the factory racers at Pomona, so the factory guys won't have any (unwanted) competition from independents.....
They said the drive-by-wire throttles won't open more than 2/3rds with the factory installed computers. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

I went back and read the article again. The factory computers only allow the throttle to open 40 %, not even close to the 2/3rds I posted.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Re: 08 Cobra Jets in Pomona

look what won the A/S on wednesday......................

One of the highlights of the 2009 Winternationals was the competition debut of the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet package cars, which were designed specifically for NHRA racing. Four of the new Fords debuted in Pomona, all of which were owned by noted collector Brent Hajek. In a scene reminiscent of the debut of the original Cobra Jet Mustangs in 1968 (when Al Joniec captured the Pomona title) former national champion John Calvert wheeled the new A/Stock entry to a final-round victory against Division 6 racer Tom Gaynor, who fouled.

Here's the quote.....

"Stuff you may not have known

These cars are set for their big public racing debut at Pomona in a couple of weeks, but buyers are already getting them. What’s to prevent someone from stealing Ford’s thunder by getting one on a strip sooner? The computer tune in the car only allows the throttle to open 40 percent currently. After Pomona, all of the owners will receive either an entirely new computer or a flash tuner to fix that problem. Drive-by-wire tech is scary eh?
"

And you can read the story here. http://freiburgersjunkyard.com/blog/...et-No.-17.html

Sorry, but I thought I had read it on a Ford website.

That's not a legal VIN. 1) It doesn't have enough digits to be legal and registerable. 2) It is not in the Federally mandated sequence either. It looks like it simply says its a Ford Racing 500 Cobrajet, car number 018.

Seems like I read on a S/S site that 2 individuals bought the first 25 or 30...something crazy like that...and the ones @ Pomona were from those 2 owners. Just FoMoCo getting around the "available to the public" clause and working the NHRA...

Here's the scoop I got from Alex Denysenko:

Brent Hajek purchased the first 10. The next 13 were delivered through Varsity Ford in Michigan.
The remainder are scattered throughout the rest of the dealer network.

BTW, Alex raced the M&M '69 CobraJet in E/SA against the AA/SA CobraJet in Pomona last weekend...

I believe they only matched up in qualifying, and being the old car was in E and the new car was A, the old car got a spot...but Barry Polley was there I believe, and posts here, so maybe I can get him to chime in.

Re: 08 Cobra Jets in Pomona

Rob, I was not in Pomona as John Calvert stated. Make no mistake Ford is back but who can poice them? It is a very Hi Tech Factory Race Car and right now the only police they have is Ford Engineering. They were shutting off at 1000 ft and running teens..... This is a 7-800 hp car no doubt. It will run mid nines by mid summer. I hope GM and Mopar have something up there sleeve. My hat is off to John Calvert and his team on their debut win. I believe there are 4 of them here on the west coast... The one thing that puzzles me is how they got in to A/ and not AA/Stock. I, like others was under the impression that this class was created for the new technology. I see HP and weight in Fords future. Very cool car though.

Barry

Like Barry said, After enough letters and complaints to NHRA they will be slowing them up. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

flyingn 02-18-2009 04:07 PM

Re: 08 Cobra Jets in Pomona

well believe it or not.. They were originally rated at 400 hp.. Thats how they got into A/stock. Come on.. 400 hp would be no where as fast as they are.. Don't forget they are only 330 cubic inches too

Salvatore 02-18-2009 04:43 PM

Re: 08 Cobra Jets in Pomona

Yea but they are supercharged. Not normally aspired. Take the blower off and how fast will they be? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Chevy454 02-18-2009 06:09 PM

Re: 08 Cobra Jets in Pomona

You have to remember, any time forced induction [ie, boost] is entered into the equation, you're basically adding cubic inches...remember the old GM rating system for their blowers (6-71, 8-71, 8-53, etc)...they represented # of cylinders/cubic inches per cylinder they could scavenge.

I was under the impression also that AA/S was created with the new cars in mind, and if the old stuff fell into it then it was all the better...but throwing the new CJ's into A/S is a joke...the amount of weight they're gonna have to throw at that combo is gonna have to be equivalent to a co-pilot! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

[I'm just jealous GM isn't the guilty party here...]

flyingn 02-19-2009 12:50 AM

Re: 08 Cobra Jets in Pomona

thats stupid statement. Take off the 2 fours and replace it with a 2 barrel on a Hemi Cuda and see how fast it is. (that makes about as much sense)It was designed to run with a blower. Of course its not going to be as fast with out...

Re: 08 Cobra Jets in Pomona

I know the factories want to see the new cars in competition. The old ones don't sell cars for them. What I am saying is one or two carbs whatever!! It is still normally aspired with carbs. Not forced induction. It is a big advantage to have turbo's or superchargers. Because of that NHRA will probably add weight cause all the other AA/Stockers with carb induction will be complaining! NHRA might as well let Toyotas with turbos in Stock eliminator then. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

I can only hope they get some HP added to their cars. Talk about bad timing for GM. Think we can squeeze some of that bail out money into the new Camaro?? If Shelby can pull off getting their cars into Stock why can't I run a Yenko? Yeah I know. I still have high hopes for GM. Think there is a Camaro supercharged beast parked away somewhere? I have to call the cuz in Moraine. I bet he has some info. Just retired after 37 years with GM and the latest being the D-Max program.

embrace technology Sam..:) Its your friend. After all, its how we are converse about what we love. Cars. Without technology we could not be doing this right now...:)Its just a car, done differently. A fast one that Ford made at the factory in the likeness of a legend they made many years ago. Its a beautiful thing.:)
