More Chevelle Photos From the 1970s.

Just found some more at Capital Raceway. This has to be 1975-ish as the car has an 11.60 dial on the window. This is with the 427 short block that I built back then. Think the quickest I ever went with the L89 396 was 12.00.

Jeff,

I'm surprised that we got down the track without much breakage for a 3700lb car! Those were the days.

Great shots of the Yenko Chevelle too!

Jerry, the only thing i really remember him breaking was the original motor....shot 2 rods out the pan and 1 stuck in the frame rail. i do have pics of that too. and numerous valve stems would rip out of the tubes. did you have air bags in the coils too ?

Here's one from 75-80 Dragway in Monrovia, MD from the early 1970s. This must be a time run as I'm running a Pinto. Go figure. This was as great place to race.

Here's the first time out with the 1966 SS396 Chevelle that we built and finished in 1978. Car went 10.80s at 126 mph the first time out and was fast. The following year, I had this car in the high nine second zone. Was a much better car for racing.

More National Dragster ink from 1977, this must be just before I retired the '69 Chevelle from racing.

Was not going to cut up my first new car and this led to the purchase of the 1966 SS396 Chevelle.

Both Paul Kiel (Mr. 427) and I had great seasons in 1978. We both won the track championships that year.

Jerry, I was looking at the list of car and drivers. I noticed John Boughers Virginia Gentlemen was on the list. Do you remember the car?

John,

Yes, both Paul amd me knew him well. Great guy and a very good racer to boot. He had only passed away about two years ago. Think he was born in 1917 if I remember correctly. I remember this because he always told us that he was born the same year as John F. Kennedy.

His Vette was green before it got the red paint. Power windows too.

John,

I actually have some video at the track back in the early 1980's of John and his Corvette. I'll have to see if I can dig it out.

John sold the vette to a Gino in FL in 1982, Gino ran the car til 1987 and went into storage and now the car came out of storage in 01/2008 It ran this summer at local strips in the Chicago area and has run 10.72@ 129mph at Rt. 66 Racetrack in Joilet http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/g...r/IMG_0125.jpg

John Boughers had the car painted red in the late 70's when Champion Spark Plugs picked up sponsorship for the car. They paid for the red paint scheme.

Now John has the "Virginia Gentelman" with a broke axel. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon and then back to the track

John,

You will love this. I found the 75-80 Track Magazine cover in my archives. On the cover is John and myself. We both had killer years in 1978 and I wound up winning the track Championship in Super Pro. John ran in the Pro catagory.

This was my debut year with the 1966 SS396 Chevelle. In 1977, another 1966 Chevelle won the championship at 75-80. His name is Sam Myers. Sam is the one who inspired me to build the new car and not cut up my 1969 Chevelle.

Cool pictures Jerry, I believe the corvette was Johns first race car and he was about 65 when he started racing.

Re: More Chevelle Photos From the 1970s.

Probably about right.....maybe a little earlier, born 1917. I remember the car at 75-80 in the early 1970s. I think John bought it new if I'm not mistaken. Power windows were so cool back then. No race cars had them!

Another cool story. We were at a divisional race at Richmond Dragway, late 1970s. John broke a half shaft and we found a local military guy to open his shop and let John repair it. John was also a military guy and that opened the door for us on a weekend.
