Man those shots of Delmar Dragway are great! Cecil County too! John Valente "Fast Johnny" always ran good especially with his 1970 car! His wife, Barbara, used to take some Polaroids to publish in the weekly results handout at Delmar, but they were never of the quality of these photos. Dave Bishop was big into race photography then and was living in NC so I was at a loss as to who could have taken them. Glad to see them shared. |

The Black Label '56 Nomad is still owned by Sonny Johnson and has recently been restored. I haven't seen it, but I should as Sonny lives about ten miles from me. He got used to run a 288 cu. in. engine and wound the hell out of it. After about ten years he got tired of breaking 4 speeds so I sold him, and installed, a Powerglide with 8' converter. The car ran damn near the same and nothing broke.

Here are a few for Jerry.
I was standing behind the starting line at the Atco WCS meet in 1970 and was talking to Dave Strickler. While we were talking, Tony Pizzi came up for a record attempt and ran 11.68. Dave said "He just screwed himself, he will never run that again." The following week Strickler and Jenkins were at Delmar for a match race with Al Joniac and Tony was there as well. Again, Strickler and I were standing behind the starting line when Tony came up for a time run. I asked Dave what he thought Tony would run and he just shrugged and said "I don't know." Damned if he didn't run an 11.68! Dave walked away shaking his head. http://inlinethumb46.webshots.com/38...600x600Q85.jpg This is a late production car built in September (I think) 1969. Brad thought he was getting a 1970 car as that was the traditional time for new models to be released. The 1970 bodies didn't come out until after the first of the year. http://inlinethumb33.webshots.com/42...600x600Q85.jpg Charlie Hampp bought this car from Sport Chevrolet and drove it home. It had about 80 miles on it when they started the race car prep. It was one of about 600 SS cars built with the 375/396 and 4 speed. It was first run in C/S with a Pizzi engine and later in SS/E. http://inlinethumb37.webshots.com/35...600x600Q85.jpg The Wheatley Bros. car usually ran SS/D but had a hood scoop added for AHRA GT-1 competition, which was enough of a modification to put it into NHRA's C/G class. Pizzi's car was 2-4 tenths faster than all of the F/Stockers in the country. Was a killer car in its day.
