Ebay 458DA pulley, is this repop?

web page
I believe this to be a repop, I compared this to a couple of original ones, definitely off, what do you think?

Ebay Seller (d-thom100)was contacted, this was the response, 'Why do you think it is not original? It looks like every other original pulley I have ever owned or seen. It also looks like every other original pulley that is on ebay right now.'

I got the same response. Clearly a repro.

Re: Ebay 458DA pulley, is this repop?

The only difference I can see in Pauls pulley is the area surrounding the stamped numbers. Looks like a raised or depressed area, depending on how you look at it. Another point, were some of these pulleys inertia welded, since I can not find any trace of a weld on some of mine and I assume they were made in two pieces then joined together?

Below are my comparisons with a few comments....Can somebody please caliper/measure front to rear on known OEM and known Repop.......although measuring in the installed position might be difficult...

I can tell you from trying to judge these at Carlisle, I could use some help in telling the difference.........

You can clearly see the oval shaped die insert surrounding the part number and roll formed groove at the face near the OD on the originals which is absent on the repo version.

Re: Ebay 458DA pulley, is this repop?

Typically, the originals are stamped so hard that the stamp can be seen from the back side. Not a clear stamp, just a deformation caused from the hard stamp.

Mark

auction ended at $525.57 (item# 330295350409), what will a real one sell for?

Re: Ebay 458DA pulley, is this repop?

You can buy this Ebay piece from Paul Baker, Goat Hill Classics for about $125.00.

I sold a real one on Ebay about six months ago. Think it sold in the $650-700 range, I can't remember. Some vendors are asking $900 for them.

Re: Ebay 458DA pulley, is this repop?

Paul Baker is a fellow I have purchased many parts from over the years. He is a good fellow and I like him, however, my opinion is, it is best to buy parts from him in transactions where you hand him the money and he hands you the part. Ordering from Goat Hill has the potential and the verified history of causing hard feelings from many buyers.

Mark

Re: Ebay 458DA pulley, is this repop?

As previously stated, Paul Baker at Goat Hill Classics sells a nice reproduction pulley. Like many reproductions, it varies from the original configuration.

I have included PICS of an original front and back. One thing the reproduction lacks is the slight deformation the stamping causes on the back of an original.

Ink stamping. I guess after the ink wears off, there is no way of identifying this??

Re: Ebay 458DA pulley, is this repop?

Among other subtle details, the fact that there's no F & P stamped into it helps narrow it down as a later issued as well.

I'd like some opinions on a 458DA pulley I ran across.
I see a slight outline of an oval around the stamped numbers.
It came off a smog pump that is dated 2382.
Could this be what some of the 71 72 versions looked like as the dies wore out that did the stamping?

If you think the above pulley is an original, tell me why, and if you think it's a repop, let me know the reasons also.

Please help educate the masses.......

When these 458 pulleys are installed on the pump, in the car, they are quite difficult to tell Original GM from repop.....

Given the asking/selling prices ($400-$500) for "real" 458's isnt the money better spent elsewhere.........like on "real" cam lifters, "real" valve springs.

I'm for OEM original parts almost as much as anybody, but some repops are so close, especially in the installed position

Go ahead, flame suit on !!!!!!!!

That would be fine as long as the repops didn't wobble, break at higher rpm's, etc

Re: Ebay 458DA pulley, is this repop?

It appears that the pulley in question does not have the Oval shaped outline around the P/N and the rear has "lines" instead of "knurls" as per the original. These lines usually indicat a pulley that has been spun formed instead of stamped. The knurled marks may have been caused by a holding fixture while a particular operation was done, such as the V groove forming. I had a pulley that was identical and determined it was a repo although very nice quality. I have a problem when sellers try and pass these off as originals and someone pays $600 for a $100 pulley, thinking they purchased an original.

Re: Ebay 458DA pulley, is this repop?

I still maintain, these OEM details are quite difficult, when installed, on the car, and painted. IMO

Thought there was difference in measurement front to rear ?

But I will try and use flashlight, mirror to look closer.
