Looks good to me. But I have been fooled before. If you can find out if the date is valid or not is the key.

Looks real but the roll stamp set up looks like it was adjusted deep here.

The "5" stamp looks to be tipped to the right quite a bit. I'm no expert though. Does look pretty deep compared to mine.
The location is some what different too. The parting line on the shaft of the casting doesn't look like mine either. Could be different moulds though. GM had more than one machine making most parts.

I purchased this from EBAY from a well known corvette guy, looks very good to me but you never know, would not think twice if I picked this up at a swap meet for $20 like I did with my 480 dist. ...here are a few more shots.

Re: Is this 499 dist. real or fake?

That's what I said - NO reason whatsoever why a housing would be turned/machined EXCEPT to REMOVE previously stamped numbers .

So unless someone can come up with the info , that GM did this (And it make NO sense whatsoever as far as labor costs , if they made a mistake in stamping - it would be stamped over with lines or x's - then restamped).

I'm calling it phony (but I am always eager/happy to learn something - if anyone has corroborating info.).

Re: Is this 499 dist. real or fake?

All of my old distributors have a pretty ratty looking finish on the machined diameter, like the pictures Hihorse shows above. All have the step at the top but are machined there too. For what it's worth. If you are worried about it having been machined and re-stamped, just compare the diameter to a known distributor.

That shiny one that looks like it has been in a lathe is Questionable at BEST~

Re: Is this 499 dist. real or fake?

not only has it been on a lathe and cut it has also been polished on the lathe with 400 emery.

Re: Is this 499 dist. real or fake?

The lathe feed lines are 180 degrees from where the numbers are rolled in (last photo). This dist has been sanded where the numbers are rolled onto the housing. It has two different petinas.
