Attached Garage Storage Question

I store my cars at home in an attached garage (no heat) I was talking to one of the guy's at SCR and he had indicated a certain composition of barrier on the floor to help with moisture. The floors are concrete and not sealed or painted.

What ideas are there for placing a barrier between the floor and the car for this winter until I can upgrade things??

Thanks Guys

HI,I STORE MY 1970 NOVA IN AN ATTACHED GARAGE ALSO.I PUT DOWN A PLASTIC VAPOR BARRIER ON TOP OF THE CONCRETE,FOLLOWED BY AN OLD PIECE OF THICK CARPET.THE PLASTIC KEEPS THE DAMPNESS BETWEEN THE FLOOR AND PLASTIC.I ALSO HAVE A FAN AT FLOOR LEVEL GOING ALL THE TIME TO KEEP THE AIR CIRCULATING UNDER THE CAR.THE BRAKE ROTORS ARE ALWAYS RUST FREE IN THE SPRING SO IT DOES CUT DOWN ON THE DAMPNESS.HOPE THIS HELPS.BILL.

A friend of mine suggested putting plywood down over the concrete. I have a 4'x8' sheet under my Corvette.

Re: Attached Garage Storage Question

Me too.
Two of those laid end to end, with a plastic vapor barrier under em,then a piece of carpeting ontop of all that.
I then jack the car up and place an additional 24X11X1-1/2" thick piece of wood under each tire to prevent anyother moisture from reaching the tires.
DON'T COVER YOUR CAR! Let it breathe..
Leave the Hood & trunk wide open too,to let any condensation that might sweat in,evaporate out quickly.
Set industrial size DRYPAC bags on the floor and seats of the interior too.
Unplug the automatic garage door,(make sure it's sealed),motor until spring as the door should remain shut until then.
For 23 years this has kept me from needing a controlled climate garage or lift and eliminated any major spring de-oxidizing knuckle busting undercarriage clean up.
It works for me..

Re: Attached Garage Storage Question

I have plywood down on the garage floor with indoor/outdoor carpeting on top of that that I leave down all year long. I also run a dehumidifyer all the time. I seal off the garage door area with heavy 4 mil plastic and do not open it until spring. I remove everything from the trunk and interior of the car such as spare tire assembly, trunk mat and the interior floor mats as to allow everything to breath. Leave the windows cracked on the car to allow air to circulate. Drypac moisture bags are a good idea..

Running a dehumidifyer is the TICKET!! You would be amazed how much moisture you pull out. Mine fills up daily in the summertime. Winter is not bad, fills up maybe once a week.. Good investment... DO NOT put blankets or anything else heavy on the car or in the motor compartment. A friend of mine, for whatever reason, put a heavy blanket over his engine one winter and in the spring he got condensation in the garage and the entire engine compartment was sweating badly because of that blanket on there. He learned his lesson on that quickly...

JNK Products for the flooring in my garage. Its concrete and I use this rubber flooring for vapor and ease of clean. I also have a marine type (boat and deck) carpet under my 69 Z and 69 nova. The guy cuts and binds it for me all the way around. You can customize your size. It is 8X17 and makes it easier on my feet to work on the car. I also have electric heat in the garage and lite flannel/cotton sheets on the cars. Flooring really seemed to upgrade my garage. It is quieter, warmer, dryer and much cleaner than before. I purchased 3 rolls of vinyl 8X24 and the marine and deck carpet for about $850.00 for both delivered.

No Carl, You will be fine with these covers. As long as they breathe. I have a very light cover over my car when its in storage thats breathable.. You just don't want to "seal it up" shut unles you are storing it in one of those storage bags..

I've been thinking about what to put down on my garage floor and the issue of moisture wicking through the concrete keeps coming up. Are you guys using vapour barriers or vinyl sheeting finding any mold or mildew underneath?

if you lay heavy plastic down before pouring the slab it wont sweat later, even in rainy Seattle https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

This is the ticket for long term storage. Extra dessicant packets too. I've used one for 3 years now and no rust on any natural steel parts. Excellent product! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif

I have used the car bags for years and the cars are well protected from moisture and condensation from temp changes.

Re: Attached Garage Storage Question

Carl, some dehumidifyers are rated to work at 40 degrees, the LG I have I think goes a little under that (35). I don't have any issues in my garage even when it gets really cold outside, like teens or single digit degrees. Even at that my garage still stays right around freezing (32 degrees at its lowest) and the dehumidfyer is not pulling much of any moisture when it is this cold anyway and I usually turn it off and let it rest a while... Just watch your humidity gauges in the garage.. The big thing is the fluctuation in temperature.. Thats when the condensation sets in.... Thats why its important to just keep the garage sealed off and do not open the door...

Re: Attached Garage Storage Question

The best money we spent at our new shop was a heating/cooling system. nothing fancy, just a heat pump with electric backup (heat), with simple duct work.

We keep it at about 60 in the winter, 78-80 in the summer, which keeps everything nice and dry (condensation). We do use car covers, but for dust, and park on carpet. Besides keeping everything dry, it is nice to be able to go to the shop and all you have to do to be comfortable is adjust the thermostat.

In years past we did as others and basically put everything up for the winter, not spending much time in the shop, now a nice place to hang out..

Re: Attached Garage Storage Question

I have two common walls to heated areas so my temps rarely if ever dip below freezing. Not much activity in the garage over the winter, up here by Cheeseland sometimes temps get down pretty low some nights so heating seems like it would cost some heavy dough. Looks like some time proven methods, winter came in early this year so I've been caught a little off guard. Plastic barrier, wood, carpet and stands will do the trick. I've got the dehumidifier in the basement. Looks like the wife will have to live without it, although it doesnt run much in the winter. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif
