It is a 351. The owner said it was a cleveland but I haven't looked under the hood. It is an automatic.

Pretty sure by '70 all of the Windsors were replaced with Clevelands (better engine).

BTW Chris, nice Torino. Did they call that the "LASER" stripe?

Laser stripe is correct Sam ! (not my torino) I think they came in four colors? you can still get them. I had a neighbor with a yellow 70 GT NEW and we thought that stripe was theee baddest thing back then (for a ford) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

actually that first "hugger orange" has a cyclone stripe not a torino laser stripe according to the owners post

That was my first car... 1970 Ford Torino, Morning Gold w/White and Olive Green guts, 302 w/2bbl. In the mid-80's, it was still a cool car to be seen on the high school parking lot. Fortunately, the local junk yard had about 4-5 torinos/ falcons with good trunk parts. Long story to follow on that!

Re: what year is this Torino?

If it's an M-code 351-4, it's rare. I have production figures at home. Off the top of my head, I think around 97 were 4-speed M-codes, and probably a couple hundred were automatics. I think 3939 in total were made starting with the 302.

Regarding the Cleveland vs. Windsor thing, I think there may be the possibility that some of the 2bbl. cars were Windsors, but all 4bbl. cars were Clevelands.

There has recently been a 4spd scj rag on ebay with a bin of 195k. It's yellow with 3.91, hideaways and no ram air. Very nice resto.

Re: what year is this Torino?

'70 Torino Convertible 429 SCJ Drag Pack auction ended on 21 Nov. with the threat of "if it doesn't sell here I'll take it to BJ or R&S - I haven't decided yet! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif Looks like a nice resto on a very rare car. Not a Ford guy, I see air cleaner has "Cobra Jet" decal. Is it a Super Cobra Jet with the Drag Pack option (i.e. external oil cooler, more aggressive gears, tuffer bottom end, etc.) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif ?

JoeG 11-26-2008 03:10 AM

Re: what year is this Torino?

Top of the line on this model was the Cobra Jet 429 Ram-Air(Shaker-Hood) with Drag pack( with all the engine goodies ,391/430 traction lock, etc.)
A buddy of mine ran one and it could run with the best---I think the SCJ --was a special Ford concept with a Daytona type nose--I think a couple were made????...Don't quote me on this though..

JoeG 11-26-2008 04:46 AM

Re: what year is this Torino?

I looked thru a couple of books and it does seem Ford named the '70 Torino with the 429 CJ,drag pack and shaker hood etc the 429 SCJ.....
I really thought there were a few Super CJ with that Daytona type nose....If I come across a photo I'll put it up..........

hubleyman 11-26-2008 05:04 AM

Re: what year is this Torino?

OK you knowledgable Ford guys, you prompted me to ask a question.....

I recently ran across a 70 Torino for sale parked near the edge of a field (yeah, I sort of live in a country setting).

It had one of those "best offer, no info" kind of signs in the window (don't you just hate that?) which immediately makes me not want to call......

Anyways, from my quick glance the car appeared to be nothing too exciting: faded gold-beige sort of paint with no stripes (looked liked possibly original paint), automatic, ratty interior, 351 emblems on the fenders. What peaked my curiosity was the fact it had a shaker hood (if that is Ford-correct terminology, I'm used to my Cuda's) but didn't have the scoop sticking out of it, just some sort of mesh screen over the opening....

So my question is - should I go check this car out again and get more details? Could this be a significant worthwhile project for somebody (not me, I'm trying to finish several of my current cars) if I were to pick it up for a song? Is there anything specific I should look for if any of you guys are interested?

Thoughts?? Charlie

Re: what year is this Torino?

Get the Vin and contact Kevin Marti . He'll give you all the info you could want on this car.

PhilS 11-26-2008 07:48 AM

Re: what year is this Torino?

The vin will confirm the engine. The 351 with 4v is M I think, the non Cobrajet (Thunderjet) 429 is N and the non ram air CJ is C and the ram air is J. I'm pretty sure that ram air was available on engines other than CJs but don't know if that changed the engine codes. The SuperCJ is much different on 429s than 428s. The SCJ got a horsepower bump of 5hp but was actually more. Solid lifters, different carb etc.

442w30 11-26-2008 05:41 PM

Re: what year is this Torino?

To clarify:

429 CJ + Drag Pack = SCJ

Despite what some sources may suggest, a J-code doesn't make a SCJ, and the Drag Pack was available on non-ram air CJs (The C-code).

Ram air was available from the 351-2 on up, and they all were Shakers. No ram air without a Shaker.

The slope nose car is the stillborn King Cobra, which was built to beat the Daytona and Superbird. It never made production. I also don't know what's between the fenderwells, but it could be a "plain" CJ for all I know.

The Drag Pack added some reinforced/heavy duty parts to the CJ, plus 3.91 or 4.30 gears. You can't tell a SCJ from the VIN, but you can use deductive reasoning and figure it out from the axle code on the data plate. However, some 4.30 cars have been found on lesser engines, but those were anomalies and it's still good to use it as a rule of thumb.

I'm not much of a Ford fan nor did I ever have any love for the 70/71 Torinos...but I always liked the Falcon Post cars and foolishly let one slip through my hands about 1981..

It's ( falcon )a very Rare Bird. I wonder how many were made? There is a guy in Florida with a nice one. It's a 351 car however. I think the lines of the 70/71 torinos are spot on. They flow nicely

442w30 11-27-2008 01:40 AM

Re: what year is this Torino?

Falcons are not rare. Hi-po Falcons are. In fact, I believe 351-4 Falcons may be rarer than CJ Falcons.

But I'd rather have a Fairlane 500 with a CJ over a Falcon any day!

And I don't know how my response was not in the same context?

There were two 429 Falcons in magazines this summer. They made just over 200 of them, I believe, but they are familiar to the magazines. How many CJ Fairlanes have you seen in magazines? The editors will skip these for the Falcons when it's the Fairlanes that are much rarer . . . and more interesting to me!
