F.A.S.T. Racing.
1 Attachment(s)
Hey all...
I am not sure how many of you guys follow this racing format, it is VERY cool. For those that aren't familiar, the cars must have a 100% stock apperance, even down to the bias ply tires that were originally installed on the car. However, any internal engine and diveline mods are allowed, as long as they do not compromise the stock appearance of the car. The Fall National Event took place over this weekend at VMP in Virginia. The new FAST ET record was set by Terry Penningtons L88 Corvette. He clocked an unbelievable 10.30 pass on the bias plies with exhaust manifolds, full 2.5" exhaust and factory L88 heads. He had stiff competition from Dave Dudek in the black Hemi RR. Dave was the previous ET record holder and still holds the MPH record. The RR ran a best of 10.40, so it wasn't easy. A somewhat scary moment occured when Ed Cook. who runs a 6 pack Roadrunner and is knocking on the door of the 10's (has run 11.0's), lost control on the big end and hit the wall at over 120 MPH. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/ooo.gif Fortunately Ed wasn't hurt, and the car sustained relatively minor damage. The car Ed runs is a "real" A12 liftoff hood RR in the very rare black color. It is one of only a few made and is a very unique piece of Musclecar history. We'll get it back together. Bad news is that Ed was done for the day, even though he did get the win light during that unforgettabe pass. Congrats to Terry and all the other competitors. Mike |
Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Congrats to Terry for setting the new F.A.S.T. et record in the L-88 corvette.I also understand a cetain 427 yellow yenko camaro broke the 11's yesterday in factory stock on bias ply tires.any comments rob clary.Chris Teed

Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
-----Have never been to one of these races but would love to. Im curious as to what MPH these 10sec cars are doing??? I have heard that the guys with these cars soften up the bottom end on these motors so they can manage to hook up at all. If thats the case they must really hit at some point to get anywhere near those kind of #s. Anybody have a vid of one of these cars launching??? Would love to see that.......Bill S

Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
A little more over on moparts
http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...e=0#Post4758262 Gonna have a lot of people trying to play catch-up over the winter months. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif |
Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
I watched over the video. Man those cars are rolling. Its just cool to see the vintage iron actually being used and enjoyed. The guy with the silver chevelle about 1/2 way through the 2nd round video was killing the gears. AWESOME!

Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Great video....Thanks.

Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Was cold, damp, & windy, but after Friday's rain out it was nice to *finally* get on the track...but, out of my 8-10 runs, probably 1/2 of them were wasted passes because of wheelspin...a little sunshine would've been nice to put some heat in the track, but oh well, you gotta work with what ya got. Anyway, made 3 passes in the 11.7s, with a best of 11.75 @ 118+...was wanting more, but I had to be gingerly @ the line or else it got ugly in a hurry...thought the car had 11.6s (or better) in it since I went 11.73 here at our local track, but never could make it happen. I drew the #1 qualifier in eliminations...I dropped an .046 light on him (on a pro-tree no less!), and he thanked me by running his personal best 11.34...Camaros were never meant to outrun Corvettes, and he promptly reminded me of that! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif
Enough rambling, here's the quick-8 qualifying order for the Factory Stock class: #1 - Larry Weymouth, L88 Corvette, 11.34 @ 120 #2 - Julie Pennington, L88 Corvette, 11.40 @ 120 #3 - Scott Tiemann, RA2 Firebird, 11.62 @ 116 #4 - Pete Simpson, ZL1 Camaro, 11.63 @ 116 #5 - Rob Clary, Yenko Camaro, 11.75 @ 118 #6 - Wayne Nelson, 428 Mustang, 12.39 @ 110 #7 - Bruno Beltraine, RAIV GTO, 12.36 @ 115 (later went 12.20) #8 - Jim Mino, RA2 Firebird, 12.49 @ ??? Gotta congratulate "Big Dog" for his record setting 10.30 pass...scary thing is, the car *wiggled* a tad off the line, so there's more ET in it! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Congrats Rob! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif That's some impressive company you had there. Nice mph (hinting at better E/T https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif )

Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Sweet, Bruno! Hey, do you happen to remember Mino's qualifying info, or if any of my info above is right/wrong? My memory was a little shaky on most of everyone's numbers...
|
Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Sorry that all my pics and videos didn't turn out Rob. I thought I had great stuff on your car but I can't find it.
Mino ran consistent .49's. He was running .20's a few weeks back at his home track. I wish we could have paired up rather than run quick 8 ladder. I really enjoy racing him......he's very competitive......doesn't leave anything on the table. |
Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Sorry for not giving the F/S guys some props in my original post. You guys were tearin' it up out there. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif That white COPO is one of my favorite cars.

Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Nothing fancy...some poly bushings, leaf spring clamps, play a *lot* with tire pressure (most folks find 40+ psi works best, but not always), pinion angle is important, and most folks have their engine set up to kill a lot of the bottom end...oh, and PRACTICE! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smirk.gif

Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Hey Rob,Great light and awesome time. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gifLooks like you guys were tearing up the track.Good air and a track that hooks means low E.T's.11.75 driver and machine were both on their game.Congrats.
Always a great show to witness. As said before,if you have never been to one you don't have a clue as to what you are missing.Get out and watch these drivers and cars put on a show. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ouguysrock.gif Kendall |

Here's the slip from my 11.75 run this past weekend...in looking it over, I'm actually *slow* in my second 1/8th mile for some reason? Had I run the same 4.0x second 1/8th mile like I was a few weeks before, I'd have had my 11.6x...not sure if the stiff head wind was to cause, or if I still needed to throw some jet at it? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Rob,
I am guessing that with the air that you had, you were probably way lean at the big end. Good air is when I try to break out the richer metering rods for the Q-Jet!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |
Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
I went up 2 jets from my "Stanton/good air" setup, which should've left me with a little wiggle room on the rich side...but I left my LM-1 sitting on our work bench, so all I had to go on was plug readings, and they looked perfect, and with the unpredictability of the weather/track I was having trouble guaging my slips...oh well, that's why we don't race on paper, right?! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
7.55 in the 1/8th is rolling on that tire. I wonder what the vette 1/8th mile was. I am guessing around 6.60.

If you consider the "rule of thumb" formulas of multiplying your 1/8 mph by 1.25 and your 1/8 e.t. by 1.57, you come up with 117.77 mph and an 11.92 e.t. You bettered both of those figures. As it is, the car gained an actual 23.61 mph on the back half, and that's, as you said, running into a stiff headwind. A typical 10-11 second car will normally gain 23-24 mph on the back half (provided it doesn't have the aerodynamics of a barn door, that is), so I'd say you're covering the back half pretty darned well. The actual time was 6.617 in the 1/8 R/T ... .136 60' ... 1.565 330 ... 4.314 1/8 ... 6.617 MPH ... 106.37 1000 ... 8.615 1/4 ... 10.308 MPH ... 132.84 https://www.yenko.net/attachments/364170-corvette.jpg Terry said the tire shake was so bad on that run he short shifted into second gear and almost let off the gas, but after he shifted into second gear the tire shake went away. Seems like there may be an even better e.t. to come !! |
Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
That thing is crazy! 1.50 60s on bias plys!
|
Re: F.A.S.T. Racing.
Neat time slip. How far the cars have come in such a short time. It's just amazing the ET's. The 2nd half of the time slips are just unreal. The question is where will it stop? I think that is a $ and cents question.
