Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
1 Attachment(s)
Well - I've started a thread to follow the restoration process on my latest project. The prior history of this car is on this site under "copo on ebay". As I was disassembling the car today I ran into a couple of things that I haven't seen before. Maybe someone out there could give me some insight. First, the interior heater box has an orange "30" marked on it - any significance? Second - when I removed the funky old brown plush carpet (very 60s) from the package tray cover, I found that the original package tray cover (still under the funky piece of carpet) has factory speaker holes in it. I've attached photos. Does this just look like AM rear speakers, AM/FM, or can't tell for sure? The car did have aftermarket Jensen speaker covers attached to the funky brown carpet - no sign of any speakers though. If anyone has any input, please feel free to post. Thanks, bruce

I'm attaching photos, but they're not coming through - need a little tech assistance!

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
Just a thought on the red 30, maybe a build sequence # for that car that day https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
Also, when you get the front fender extensions off, look for something like this under the crud, that's if they are the originals. 04C car http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...ke/copo060.jpg Mike https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

I removed the fenders and there was no marking inside of the fender extension. They look original, but no marking. This is an 05E car - maybe they didn't mark them all? I've attached a photo of the original firewall piercings showing RS hole. I would say that the car came with two rear speakers. I've had several '69 Camaros, but never anything but an AM radio with front speaker only. Does anyone know if an AM radio could be ordered with dual rea speakers, or would duals be for a stereo application? Also, the "30" on the heater box does tie out to the last 2 of the VIN. Could be coincidence, but somehow they had to flag the BB heater core on the X-11 code car. Regards, Bruce

OK - the car is pretty well disassembled. I took tons of photos if anyone needs any particular ones let me know. Some neat pics of the routing of the liquid tire chain hoses, etc. I've rolled the car into a corner of the garage - now the hunt for parts begins! I've gotten some great leads on the original drive train components - please keep your ears to the ground and pass on any info that you run into. I'm a collector and have only sold one of my collector cars in the past 25 years - so I'm not looking to make a quick buck on this car. I love these supercars and I enjoy restoring them to their former glory! Regards, Bruce

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
Bruce, I bought my car ten years ago and I still haven`t started restoring it. You got yours only weeks ago and is already on it.
It will be interesting to read about your restoration. Keep us posted ! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...BruceRocks.gif I love these supercars to ! Regards |
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
I parted out a 69 years ago and it had the dual rear speaker package tray and AM/FM stereo. I have never seen an AM with dual rear speakers (unless it was also ordered with an 8-track, in which case it would also have the two kick panel speakers in front).
Again, great car! |
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
HI my copo had the same markings on the lower fender june car
|
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
You got a picture of that ?
Thanks Mike |
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
hi no that is 25 years ago

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
My old '70 Camaro (granted it was a '70) had an AM radio with dual speakers... one in the front dash, other in the package tray.
|
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
The only way to get 2 rear speakers was stereo (either FM or 8-track). Does it have kickpanel speakers?
I've seen #'s before on heater boxes. I don't recall if they matched the VIN, but normally the VIN wasn't used in the plant. They tracked components by the rotation #. |
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
The black RS/Z had the same number on the top of the heater box and the top of the gas tank... the number 80...
|
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
I still think those #'s were a sequence #, especially when you find them in multiple locations. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
I have also seen a # on the lower front fender extension's on Camaros. Just a thought. Mike |
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
Here's the fender extension from my 69 Z11 zone office show car. 02D car with 6104XX VIN. I've always wondered what it meant.

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
If I recall correctly,Chris Shorts JD/Yenko Chevelle has "427" written in grease pencil on the fiberglass ft. bumper filler on the driver side.
|
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
One would think the # was the rotation #, but I've only seen 2-digit numbers on the heater box. Rotation #'s went a lot higher than that.....
|
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
Good point Kurt. I have also seen the heater box # in red crayon. Might it be a vendor mark https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
The red crayon mark was the same on the heater box and the gas tank...

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
I received the pics of the car from the original owner. Taken when it had 25 miles on it. Also one taken in summer of 1970 (car got a little racier!). Can one of you gurus help me post them (files too large)? Also got notarized statements from both the original owner and the dealership manager who ordered the car (he only ordered one RS car -Ewing Chevrolet). They both state: RS, 9561, Sportscar package, liquid tire chain, console, gages, M21, X11, Z23, AO1, rear speaker ...

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
I have talked quite a lot with Donn Valdiserri (the original owner of my car) and Bob Shaffer (high performance manager at Ewing Chevrolet from 1968-1972 who placed the order for my car). Bob ordered about 12 1969 COPO Camaros as well as several 427 Chevelle post coupes, and a couple 427 Novas. Bob has an incredible memory (he remembered the original owner of my car immediately). If any of you have Ewing cars - I would be happy to send you Bob's contact info (he gave me permission to post this offer). He actually had a new hugger orange COPO Camaro of his own - maybe someone knows of his old car.

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
Bruce,
I just got off the phone with Bob Shaffer. Very nice fellow with lots of information. He confirmed about 12 '69 COPO Camaros including his HO COPO demonstrator. Did he tell you about his 1st drive with that car just after he pulled it off the car hauler? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif Anyway, what struck me the most was what he told me about the '69 COPO Chevelles (I asked him 2 different times just to be sure). He only recalls selling 2 Chevelles, one red, one silver?, but he is sure they were both 300 Deluxe POST cars! His mantra was to put only performance options on the car and keep the weight to a minimum and the 300s (with the "built-in roll bar") were just the ticket. I always wondered why I hadn't heard of he 300 DX post cars being ordered via COPO. Good stuff Bruce - thanks! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
427 novas? from the factory?

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
300 DLX 427 COPO's !!!! ???
I think I'll have to build a clone of that now. |

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
Plot thickens. Tom - what "COPO paperwork" are you referring to? Is this a memo from GM or something between i.e. Yenko and GM? I asked Bob S. how he found out about the COPO process and he being in proximity to Yenko kind of picked it up on the grapevine and asked his regional sales mangager about it who then looked into it which eventually resulted in Ewing dealership's ability to utilize the COPO process for 427s in other than full size Chevys.

Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
This would be the memos (from Chevrolet) to dealers & the parts list for #9562...it only references 13637 models.
|
Re: Restoration of burnish brown RS COPO
Ok Tom - thanks for the info. I will dig a little deeper with Bob. Mr. Ewing is still around too and the two of them talk. I'll see what I can dig up. I know how time can play tricks with your memory https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif, but Bob seemed pretty sure of himself.
