NY World's Fair '64 / '65
[b]"Peace Through Understanding" was the theme of the 64/65 NY World's Fair.
As any NY undertaking is the fair was embroiling in controversy from it's unsanctioned beginning to it's near bankruptcy end. Like its predecessor, the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair lost money. It was unable to repay its financial backers their investment and it became embroiled in legal disputes with its creditors until 1970, when the books were finally closed and the New York World's Fair 1964-1965 Corporation was dissolved. Most of the pavilions constructed for the Fair were demolished within six months following the Fair's close. While only a handful of pavilions survived, some of them traveled great distances and found reuse following the Fair. But as a kid in '64 there was nothing better then hopping on the train to spend the day at the fair!! - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF1.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF2.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF3.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF4.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF5.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF6.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF7.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF8.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF9.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...0Fair/WF10.jpg - |

Re: NY World's Fair '64 / '65
These were all taken by my Mom, or myself - the Fair ran for 6 months a year for 2 years -
I loved going there and riding in the cars in the Ford & GM exhibits. Amphicar had an exhibit and for a small cost they would drive you around and then drive down the dock into the lake in Flushing Meadow Park and run you around for a couple laps. Many a weekend was spent roaming the grounds! I have a bunch of shots I need to go through and scan. More to come! |

Is any of it still standing ? [/ QUOTE ] [b] The main attractions still standing are the Unisphere and the NY State Pavilion. - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF2.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Fair/WF6.jpg - Unfortunately the NY Pavilion has deteriorated to ruin. - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...435/wfair8.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...435/wfair9.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...435/wfair3.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...435/wfair6.jpg - - Years ago there was talk of a proposed Air & Space Museum on the site of the pavilion but there was worry due to pile foundation deterioration. They were fearful of collapse if anything was done without major reconstruction. I haven't heard anything on this in years. The Space Park was badly deteriorated but some of the rockets were restored and put back on display a few years ago. I remember they used the park for overflow parking at Shea Stadium during the eighties. They would park you on the grass in-between the rockets. The Heliport has been used as a banquet / wedding facility for at least the last 30 years. The former NYC building still houses a fantastic model of the entire city of New York and is now also the home of the Queens Museum of Art. Most of what's left is just used as a park with the sidewalks serving as walking trails. The fountains at the Unisphere are only filled and flowing during the tennis US Open. |

The Unisphere (globe)was transported to NJ next to exit 8A of the turnpike. It's right next to Rossmore, which is a retirement village.

Re: NY World's Fair '64 / '65
Unless they moved it since 11:30 this morning, its either a replica or not the unisphere, I work across the Hiway at Queens College and have a fine view of the fresh meadows ash pit all day long. and that was when checked on it last,
running comment here is when are the local hooligans gonna unbolt it and roll it down 495!! Its still here, along with the MIB plungers NY pavillion tavern on the park I think, the science pavilion ans aviary Shea gets torn down within a year I remember hanging out under the UNI before going down to Connecting Hiway in the 70's |

Re: NY World's Fair '64 / '65
[b]One of the most interesting exhibits to me was the "Panorama of the City of New York." The exhibit is housed in the New York City Building, a building originally built for the 1939 Worlds Fair. It was directly adjacent to the great icons of the '39 Fair, the Trylon and Perisphere. In the '64 Fair it was (and still is) adjacent to the Unisphere.
The building was renovated for the '64 Fair and housed the almost 10,000 square foot architectural model of the five boroughs of the city. The panorama was built by a team of 100 workers taking three years to complete. It has been updated since the end of the Fair and includes every building constructed before 1992. This is almost 900,000 buildings! To view the model you took a simulated nine minute helicopter ride around the City. Lighting would come on and off to highlight sections of the City as you passed by. It is still open today. - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...427435/pan.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...27435/pan4.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...27435/pan5.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...5/panorama.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...27435/pan1.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...27435/pan2.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...27435/pan3.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...27435/pan6.jpg - Take the Ride! |

It is astonishing how elaborate the corporate displays were. It is amazing how they would spend that kind of $$ for somthing lasting 2 years (and only open in the warm months)I can't believe that Chrysler Bldg shaped like a V8. I lived about a 1/2 hour from it, but was only 3 months old when it cranked, unbelievable, very cool pics. THANKS

Re: NY World's Fair '64 / '65
In 1964 New York only issued one license plate with the Worlds Fair banner. It was renewed with the red vertical stripe for 1965.
This other was a plate used in the front most likely for marketing purposes. They were selling for $200. (mint) on peebait. http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...3/HPIM4434.jpg http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...3/HPIM4431.jpg |
