65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
I have finally decided to give up my 48 year old stock rims and get fancy. Was thinking of TT's, Keystones or anything interesting that would be almost period correct. Fitment at stock ride height in the rear well is an issue with the early Chevelle.
Any vintage photos, ideas would be great. Paul3 (pxtx) how many different combos have you tried? |
Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
As soon as I can get infront of my PC, I'll get some ideas up. Too hard to post from my phone. Anyone else?
What time period are you feeling like? |

I've got some Keystone Rouges for sale if you're interested? I think they've never been mounted. They're 14x6, with a 5x4 3/4 and 5x4 1/2 dual bolt pattern.

Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
Chris, if you like slots, I have a 100% perfect set of NOS 14x7 Ansen Sprints that would look real nice on that Chevelle .

Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
When I got my car, it had a 1970 Chevelle 10 bolt posi rear that I quickly snapped the pinion off of due to wheel hop. I located a 12 bolt form another 1970 Chevelle and that rear has been in ever since. I do have a correct rear, but what I have works for now. I just needed to mention that as my set-up is probably not a great reference on fitment.
This is a pair of 15" SST I traded a set of 14" Cragar SS for. Looking back, the 14" SS were better looking. http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...eAtRupples.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...rportDrags.jpg Here is a group of other cars just for reference: http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...vellescoop.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...th_Dennett.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...evelle_z16.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...t_chevelle.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...Tx/z16tabs.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...orenzvi-vi.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...ger-2small.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...libuMgrove.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...BoppinBear.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...1KFLwvq_ph.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...man7/girl1.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...irl2520awb.jpg Hopefully you've got some fiends to borrow wheels from to figure it out. I would probably recommend just trying to find a set of wheels you like for the front and leaving the back in black. I have a few sets of Spyders I've been meaning to mount some rubber on and see how they would look. not sure if I would run just two up front, or all around. http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...elleSpyder.jpg One wheel that I bought just for the sake of running on the front is the early non-chrome Keystone's http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...7/IMG_4236.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...u2L9Q60_12.jpg I also picked up a set of the Parnellie Jones wheels. The ones I got are 15x6 which is kinda cool since I have a preference for 15" wheels for no good reason. Not sure if i want to run all 4, or just two up front. http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...esSeats025.jpg They don't look bad with some slicks mounted on them either. http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...elliwheel1.jpg http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...scan0088-1.jpg Kinda reminds me of the rouge wheel above. |

Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
----I had a set of 14" chrome-reversed wheels on my grandfathers 64 Chevelle convert about a month after he bought it new. Had the bullet centers and the combo looked great at the time. I still like chrome-reversed for a real period look. Believe it or not he never noticed the change. Wasnt much of a gearhead, LOL!......Bill S

Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
Another vote for chrome steel / chrome reverse wheels. That's what I'm running on my '65 Nova. Here's a picture I took this spring.
http://home.comcast.net/~john.sm/motelB&W.jpg Maybe try chrome steel wheels and whitewalls up front and black wheels with pie crust slicks in the back. |

Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
I would have loved a set of Cragar SST's back in the day. can't find any now, would be happy with just two. I have a line on four Ansen Sprints but they might wind up on Mike's Nova leaving me still looking. I definitely DO NOT want any look-a-like UNiLug wheels.

Thanks! I was trying for a mid-60s period look, and wanted something a bit different from cragar S/S wheels or torq-thrust style. I started looking through old magazines / photos, and realized that up until about 1968-1969, whitewalls and chrome reverse wheels were very popular. I wasn't sure at first, but now I am very happy with the "look". Car is a 327, Muncie M20, 3.36 posi - white w/ red bench seat interior. The best part is, Wheel Vintiques has these wheels available new in a wide range of sizes / backspace, and they are very affordable. |

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...nniChevele.jpg What are you thinking of Chris? I am thinking of bias ply for the Ansen Sprints on the Nova, back to square one for the Chevelle. Maybe just get some skinny front runners and put slicks on the stock black rims out back. Pretty much used up my wheel and tire budget into the next three years. lol |

Yeah, can't really go wrong with some skinny magsup front and some black steelies out back. |
Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
They may not be correct for mid 60s, but im finding that 200S's look awesome on most cars.

Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
two years later and I finally got some rubber on the Ansens. Mike's Nova was already on jacks so I tried them here first.

Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
what is the back space on those ?
they look like 14" ...? I have a set (pair) of 15x7 M/T Slots w/3 1/4"-3 1/2 " BS |
Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
14x7 w 3.5" back space
|
Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
This is a real shame. I've still got the 1970 12 bolt in my car. I do have a Nov. 1964 12 bolt to go in someday. I struggle with that choice, because some many of the period wheels don't fit the early Chevelles. I may just narrow the 1970 rear a bit more so I could have a bit more fun with common vintage wheels.
So I trust you're looking for some 14x6 wheels Chris? |
Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
Paul I've been lead to believe I can use a 15x7 as long as the back space is correct.
Not that I plan on changing the rear, but what is the size difference in the later unit?[size:14pt] |
Re: 65 Chevelle day 2 wheels and tires
The difference is 1" in total, so only 1/2" per side. If I were to cut down my 1970 12 bolt I would probably make it 2" narrower over all. Just cut off the factory bearings off the end and put a Ford style end and be done.

65 wheels and suspension
1 Attachment(s)
browsing old threads, the kid surprised me with a set 15" TTs a couple years back which led me to discover that every piece of my suspension was still original and needed upgrades. after much consideration we decided to pull the trigger on a major rebuild starting with floor and trunk sections that were almost non existing where the body bushings sit.
|

with a few other projects half way done and myself away for the winter the kid managed to pull the interior and motor by himself and send the car on its way for metal work. hopefully the next time I post on this thread we'll see some big changes
