'70 Chevelle Front Rotors
 

A front and rear brake overhaul is next on my list for my '70 SS Chevelle and I found I have one two piece rotor and one one piece rotor on my car. Can someone educate me in what is correct for a '70 SS and who would be the best supplier to buy a couple of new rotors from?

Two piece rotors are correct.....there are definetely originals out there.....however, you need to purchase them from a trustworthy source.....I believe the min. thickness is .95-.96.

You can also purchase a repop.....as they are repoping them now.

Where was your Chevelle assembled and on what date?
Chevelles built within the first 5/6 mos.of production received 2pc. rotors.
1pc. rotors became the norm within the months following that.
Jan/Feb.70 seems to be the changeover date,but with 7 plants building them,there were variations among them from what I've seen.
The steering knuckle code in box #12 on your buildsheet helps denote this,as well as the backing plate used.

Two piece rotors were used up until around I believe January of 1970.. After that they went to a one piece and used a different backing plate as well. The one piece rotors also had a single groove cut in the middle of the face of the rotor.

I'm not 100% on the build date as the cowl tag looks like it's been on and off the car. Can't quite make it out definitively but if I had to guess I'd say it is 12B rather than 02B. Happy to have any input?

Damien,
If your car has it's original front backing plates they will tell which style rotor was on the car.
If the car has # 5463496 & 5463497 it had 2 piece rotors.
If the numbers stamped on the backing plates are 5463565 & 5463566 then it had 1 piece rotors.
All this info is useless if the plates are not original to the car.
The other way to know which style the car came with can be found on the build sheet of the car if you have one.
From memory I believe codes AS and DK are 2 piece codes and DT is 1 piece. I am traveling right now and can't reference my build sheet collection right now.
I would lean towards 2 piece rotors if your cowl tag date is 12 B but it could go either way in my opinion if it's 02 B.
I have seen cars built into March of 70 with 2 piece rotors.
My February built LS6 convert from the Baltimore plant has 2 piece rotors.

Great info Chris....since we are on the topic of early and later built '70`s......Damien also take a look at your tail lenses. Are they the early style - flat lenses? The same with your hood....is your hood an early hood? Take some pictures of the underside front portion of your hood and post them...again this only applies if your hood and tail lenses are original.

Plus I see your Chevelle has the lower trim under the front headlight bezels....another part found on early built Chevelles.....perhaps we will see a pattern here [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif[/img]

You can post or PM me your VIN which will also tell me approximately when it was built. If the blue VIN decal is still on the drivers door that will also give you the build date which is in the upper right corner of the decal.
