1969 Camaro: 890 vs 862 Horn Relay

Hi All,

Looking for some guidance. I need a horn relay for a '69 Z project I'm working on. The car is an 02B build. Which is correct? 862 or 890? Black plastic or white/clear plastic?

My personal '69 Z (10D of 68) has its original 862 horn relay with white plastic. Thanks in advance...

Regards,
Dan

Hi Dan,
It's been my understanding that after March or April of 69 got the 890 Horn relay and prior to that got the 862. I'm sure others will chime in but I'm pretty sure your car would be an 862.
Chris

Dan,
I have a 889 with a black base on my June built Z.Looks to be original to the car.

Thanks Mark! I appreciate the info.

Found a 862 on eBay for a good value as result of the thread.

Dan

Were the 862's and 890's the only horn relays used during production?? I was hoping others would have chimed in to see what type they have on there Camaros.Would be nice to know if mine could still be correct.

The changeover from 862 to 890 part # in the 1969 AIM is dated 3-3-69, but since that is just the date the engineering documentation was revised, the actual change on the assembly line would differ.

Re: 1969 Camaro: 890 vs 862 Horn Relay

Hi Mark,
I think if you look into it a little more you'll find that 1115862 horn relays were used in the beginning of 69 production and then changed to the 1115890 sometime during March or April and this relay saw use throughout the rest of 69 production. 1970 models all got the 1115890 as for what I've been able to determine. The 1115889 relay was only used on the assembly line for the 1971 model year. 1972 changed to 6273328. Chevrolet superceded all earlier horn relay numbers from 66-71 in 1971 to the 889 which could explain why your car has that relay on it looking like it's been there a while. Also explains why it's so difficult to find NOS versions of these horn relays prior to the 889's.
Hope this helps.
Chris

Thanks Chris.I looked at the relay i have on my 70 Nova which is a survivor car and it has a 890.Another thing i noticed was the 890's have a metal bracket where the 889 is all black plastic.

Further to my post above regarding the AIM documentation change date, a search on CRG found several threads that suggest the 890 relay was in use after January of 1969, some examples here:
