Known as "the Door to Hell," Darvaza gas crater in Turkmenistan looks like something out of a movie. While engineers were drilling for oil at the site, a natural gas pocket collapsed creating a sinkhole. To stop the spread of methane gas, Soviet scientists opted to set it on fire, perhaps unaware of how much fuel it contained. The crater has been burning since 1971, close to 50 years. |

The fast-food giant originally went by another name for a limited time: Insta-Burger King. The “Insta” was a reference to the special grill machine used to cook the burgers called the Insta-Broiler. Cornell University classmates James McLamore and David Edgerton bought the original chain from Keith Kramer and Matthew Burns in 1961. The new owners eventually started using a gas grill they called a “flame broiler,” instead of the Insta-Broiler, and took the Insta out of the company name. |

Though today they're associated with Christmas, decorated evergreens actually have pagan roots. Ancient Romans and Egyptians adorned their home with the trees for winter, and the practice continued throughout Europe as a ritual for the winter solstice. Finally, in the 16th century, believers in Germanic countries began making the evergreens part of their Christmas celebrations. |

In 1851, he traveled with his sons from the Catskills to New York City with a few dozen evergreens in tow. The haul sold out within a day, and Christmas tree lots were born. |

Rockefeller Center in New York City first displayed a Christmas tree in 1931. The complex was under construction, and workers pooled their money to buy and decorate a 20-foot fir. The tradition continues today, and the Rockefeller tree is perhaps the most famous in the world (although during the Second World War, the annual Rockefeller Christmas tree stood unlit due to blackout regulations). |
