In case you wanted an El Camino but just couldn’t abide Chevrolet emblems, GMC offered the essentially identical Sprint and Caballero. With a touch of sarcasm, the legendary racer Smokey Yunick—a GMC truck dealer himself for many years—once wrote that GMC was the only vehicle with two complete teams of engineers: Chevrolet designed the trucks, and GMC designed the hub caps and ash trays. While his salty observation wasn’t technically accurate or literally true, necessarily, he did have a point. Many GMC light vehicles were unequivocal Chevrolet clones, differing only in the names on the trim pieces. |

The Chevrolet engineers did the GMC touches, too. There was no GMC engineering at all; only marketing. RPO Z88 = GMC nameplate conversion RPO X88 = Chevrolet nameplate conversion RPO Z75 = Cadillac nameplate conversion K |

These builds occurred in the GMARC building (GM Assembly Research Center) located at the NE corner of the property. K |

Clone - master Cylinder should be gloss black and only the A990 Race Hemi had chrome valve covers. Street Hemi use the black crinkle finish. |

What If . . . Plymouth added the 440 Magnum engine to the Barracuda Gran Coupe. The 383-4V was the largest engine you could get. You could add the Performance Hood and the Engine Call out Stripes from the 'Cuda mid-year. |

Any further information on this truck, Lee ? Reason I ask, is, I believe this was crashed hard in the front in St Paul, MN after leaving Back to the Fifties about 10 yrs ago. The owner died of a heart attack shortly after and the family had it brought to Centerline, where I worked and I started repairing the front end. The hood and fenders are all welded together to make it a one piece, even though it appears to be stock. In the lower pic you can see the rubber strap, at the bottom of the fender, holding the hood down. After finding out the insurance coverage wasn't going to be enough to repair it, they let it go and it went to auction. Be interesting if there was history on it from auction to rebuilt. At the time, I had a bunch of pics of it, but apparently deleted them when it was taken out of Centerline and sent to auction. Thanks, Mitch

Sorry - no further info. Photo not taken from a dealer/auction.

Funky looking paint job. Looks like Candy Apple Red shot over gold, then fogged with black before being clear coated.
