Doug,
What brand of paint will you be using on this project? Will the original owner (Mr. Weaver) be coming to MCACN 2019? |
Hey Jim.... yes as far as I know it John Weaver is planning on being in Chicago this year .
The paint that we are using is Sikkens...it is a solvent based product. It has started with a epoxy primer then a polyester surfacer, then a urethane surfacer, after that ...The car will get 3 coats of color and 4 coats of clear . Since the car is all original sheet metal and we are not having any rust issues ... The finished product will be amazing...especially since Frank will be behind the gun. They are currently working on the firewall looking at all of the grease pencil codes. I will post pictures as soon as I can. |
Happy Birthday by the way, but I guess everyday is your birthday when you own a car like this!

3R U joints in a '67 396 drive shaft. I haven't seen that before. My '69 396 4 speed drive shaft has 1310 U joints.
|
What a amazing detailed build! can't wait to see it completed.

So you would be able to identify a rear end from a TH400 car by the yoke? Was that '67 and '68 only?
|
From what I gather...yes Freddie

You are killing this resto!!!
When will this car be out in the wild world? MCACN 2020? Ryan W31 PS: We shook hands at MCACN |
Hi Ryan...I remember us meeting. I was also parked across from your Olds display this year in the COPO Camaro display. We have several people helping us with the restoration. Frank and Matt deserve all the credit... that team of guys is special. Dave McGaffee is my motor guru and technical guy for the drivetrain. If all goes well I hope to be at Chicago 2019.

We had a great view of COPO RS central station from W31 Land :-) Ryan W31 |
Today I received a call from a gentleman that I had been wanting to talk to...I left him a message a week ago and with the holidays he was finally able to return the call. His name is Rich Russo of Canonsburg Pennsylvania...he is a city councilman and is 63 years old. He was 12 years old in 1968 and worked for his dad (Patsy) at there Sunoco gas station in Canonsburg near Rt 519 / Rt 79. His job duties were to pump gas, wash cars and misc stuff at the 2 bay gas station. His father was 93 when he passed away a few years ago. At one point Patsy sold cars for Yenko Chevrolet. Rich recalled a few names of a couple salesmen at Yenko. I asked Rich about the 67 Yenko Camaro Conversion cars and what was done at their Sunoco station...he said “ the motor transplants were done at the Yenko dealership before they were sent to the Sunoco station”. The station was hired to do items such as rear end swaps, exhaust systems, tires etc. It was a pleasure talking to him and listening to his story with his father. Thanks to M.N. For his help in locating Rich.
|
Very cool Doug! This information correlates directly with John Weaver's history of the car. Since the rear is original to the car the Sunoco station must have did a gear swap. More than likely the Sunoco station also did the headers and the rear leaf springs.
|
interesting to hear about Rich Russo of Canonsburg
In my research, I heard about many people who did work for Yenko part time or full time many of them were either Don's SCCA racing buddies or fellow PA Corvette Club members |
Joe C. I think since Patsy work for Don selling cars that was a good inlet for him plus he had a gas station that was less than a mile away that made it convenient the good thing is Rich remembers this for and is dad doing work for Yenko
|
I spoke to another original owner Yenko car ...and he told me that his original salesman was Patsy Russo.
|
I was able to stop and see the car this past weekend. Doors and deck lid are hung and test fit. Being original sheet metal they fit like a glove. We also were able to decipher a ton of firewall codes after it was carefully chemical stripped.
