Looks great Dave - can't wait to see it in November.

scuncio 04-21-2018 02:42 AM

I’m doing a headliner tomorrow...wish you lived on my block!!!! Nice work as usual.

Just watched a new episode of Jay Leno's Garage where he got to drive the original Bulitt Mustang. The owner was there and told the story of how his father came to own the car and what he paid for it back in 1974.
Pretty cool story; Dave you're doing an AMAZING job with yours. Thanks for taking the time to bring us along for the ride.

Thanks for the kind words! I think this build is touching a lot of car guys and gals and that's what makes this so much fun! Yes, lot of movie cars out there. Lots of Bullitt tributes too.... but I'm trying to "one up" the masses in my details. And, not to mention, would like to think I could do the MCA proud in a judging critique! :burnout: Looking forward to having you guys sit in the car and enjoy it too! Just no reverse burnouts....I think Bob would ban me!:frown:

I'm happy with the center cap look but want those front wheels out a little more out of the wells, so a 1/4" spacer should do it. The studs are plenty long to handle it.

The doors contain no less than three trim pieces and with everything in place along with the roof rail weather stripping, they shut tight! I picked up the aircleaner from the chrome shop before I headed out. Glass installed Thursday!

Cheers
Dave

You guys rock! :smile::biggthumpup:

There are many mysteries in life. Lots of lore, strange sightings, and so much left undiscovered. Barn finds all over, a Declaration Of Independence found behind a hunk of drywall, Elvis in the lobby at any given hotel in Vegas.:smirk: All amazing! But of all the rare things to see out there, I'd say the top three in my mind are Bigfoot, my wallet filled with cash, and an air cleaner S-tube and exhaust manifold heat shroud for a 68 Mustang 390 GT. :frown: I've officially now eliminated two of the three: the air cleaner S-tube is in my possession and as such, a wallet full of cash is now gone.:thumbsdown:

This was the last piece of the puzzle I was missing for the Mighty Stangatang! Where'd I find it? Craigslist Vegas.... where else? Thank you... Thank You very much...:laugh:goggles

I just drove along the marina, etc., in SF on a layover on Saturday and we were talking about the Bullitt chase scenes and how they didn't have any permits!

A12pilot 04-24-2018 10:51 AM

It's crazy, and true! The new mayor wanted the city to be attractive to the movie guys, so he gave them free reign of the city. They closed streets down when needed for the specific scenes. Really a neat thing.

I think I need to make a video of the prelude to the chase scene to advertise MCACN for Bob.:cool2: Same music... same lead up, me driving the car around.....then right as the Charger rocks it, :3gears: show the MCACN logo! :burnout:

Cheers:beers:

Dave,

Now that the Mustang is near complete....what is next? New House, Another car project? A long needed Vacation? A lunch at ORD?

Dan

A12pilot 04-24-2018 03:36 PM

Hmmm... after the Bullitt? :dunno:Lunch in Chicago? Welp,* several things on the deck. Yep, house/ shop/ stables will be starting in the next month or so, and since I only have the small rental shop right now, no car builds until next year. Oh... they'll be tinkering and such on the Mighty D150 Ram, and I need to fabricate a custom entry gate to the new Ranch with a set of wings in the gate, but no major build project until next year. But fear not! My plan on a follow up to the Beater Bee is just about coming to fruition! Yes... it'll even be right in line Alphabetically with the Beater Bee. :biggthumpup:As with all my builds, you'll learn stuff you never knew you didn't know or needed to know, or even really cared to know. I figure the next one will be more edjumacational too. Like a "This Old Friggin' Car!" instructional show where I explain helpful tips and techniques on how to lose your favorite tool, pay way too much for a part....twice since you forgot you bought that part a few months ago....and explain how to recognize that bad idea you thought was a good idea until you tried it, before you actually try it!

And soon as I get into ORD on a nice layover you're on speed-dial! :cool2:

Cheers
Dave

I think the only thing that trumps the circumference of the 390 chrome air cleaner lid is the Chrome Dome from the mid 60s Hemis! Soooooooo much chrooooome!:eek2:

I was fortunate that the car had the original jack and hardware hidden in the trunk. Trying to stay 100% correct, the F70 WSW Firestone mounted up on a stock 14x6 styled steel wheel trims the trunk out nicely. My car has the Reflective Group which is a reflective "C" stripe on the side of the car and the center part of the wheels painted in a reflective coating. Like a stop sign has. The spare, however, is not painted with the coating. My original spare didn't have that in it. Just Argent paint. Tomorrow the glass goes in! :3gears:

Cheers

Glass went in without a hiccup! And luckily, I didn't ding any of the stainless fresh back from the polisher either!

And I came home to a freshly restored, tested, low fuel sensor equipped fuel sending unit!!:3gears::cool2:

Undercoating time, and you know what that means! It's just about done! :3gears: Mustangs had sound deadener sprayed in the wheel wells and interior quarter panel, and then they were painted. The wheel wells in the back, therefore, are body color. The front wheel wells were not painted since body color stopped at the firewall so that remained black. When the dealer got a hold of it, the salesguys got involved and said "You know, for an extra $2.50, we can throw that undercoating stuff on the chassis which will make everything look cool, cause our mechanics to curse and scream when they have to work on anything under the car, and 50 years from now, will make some dude really unhappy when they try to restore this car to Concours Gold.... whatever that is? ":dunno::grin:

With the dealer undercoating, the rear wells got it and so did everything else like the floor pans, gastank, and all the lines and such. Some only got wheel wells and that's the look I went for. Love this stuff and its textured and ready to spray through a Shutz gun. I got it from RestoRick. Awesome stuff! More to come

Cheers
Dave

markinnaples 05-01-2018 01:42 PM

Was it painful to paint that stuff on all of your freshly restored and shot paint?
I know it's the right thing to be factory correct, but that would pain me to do the overspray like that.

Not in the least! It's all part of the process. :cool2: each step adds to the"rolled of the line" look and is fun to replicate.

Happy to report the Stang roared to life! The original 390 belched and gulped, then grumbled and screamed ready to take on some streets of San Fran! Eric... that carb was tuned perfectly!! Thank you so much!!:biggthumpup: I prefilled the bowls and it fired right up. A syringe is the ticket for that and we just happened to have an extra one laying around from when we had to feed the newborn kitty. I'm pretty sure it was the cat formula that made it fire up so fast based on how crazy our cat is today!:hmmm::thumbsdown:

And of course, the brand new start solenoid took a dump right after I shut it down after the cam break in.... But fear not! New one on hand and ill post up a video tomorrow! How'd I figure that out? Simple.... key off.... car still runs:dunno: Pulled the coil wire off to stop the car running. When I hooked the battery back up, I tested the poles on the solenoid and low and behold, the "I" (ignition) terminal was getting volts. So that contact fused in the solenoid itself. Good times.

So tomorrow I'll put the new one in and fire it up again! Woohoo! Two parts left: Radio and Steering wheel (getting leather wrapped) and here's the heat shield and s-tube for the air cleaner ready to go in.

More to come.....

Cheers:beers:
Dave

Great work as alway Dave!! What an awesome Bullitt Stang. Can't wait to hear it run.

With the Stang rounding turn four what is next on the agenda? I know you have something brewing....another Mopar, Vette, Chevelle or another Mustang?

Hopefully that worked! :scholar::confused2:

Let me guess.

You left the back-up lights off so no one would know when you are about to do a reverse burnout.

Pretty sneaky that. :naughty:

Thanks men! I'm shocked at how smooth this thing idles too. Sounds really good through the resonators!

Low fuel light was the last light to function on the Convenience Panel and now they all work. Oh... and the Brake pressure light on the dash is fixed. That was a simple connector issue. Now that the cam break-in is done, all I need is my steering wheel back so I can get some video on the test drive! Hopefully next week.

Engine bay done. The front shocks are Koni, like McQueen had too. Still visible on the Hero Car today in the engine bay photos. What I may do is install the same open element air cleaner that's on it now so the look is identical. But that may be at a later date. Love the stock big chrome lid!

Steering wheel....Radio....Alignment: DONE!!:biggthumpup::3gears:

To answer your question Lawrence, they'll be another thread on this. Plenty of projects in the works with the main car I've been chasing for 3yrs may come to TX soon! :naughty::burnout:

Cheers

It’s on, Canuck!!!:burnout: I’m pretty sure people would pay to see us toil around town!!! Man that Charger is sweet!!!

Off on another trip. Steering wheel should be done next week when I’m back so I can get the car outside for some good pics. The 8-Track seems to be another saga :frown:

More to come!!!

Now that the engine break-in is done, it's clutch and shifter adjustment time!

What I like to do it to fly around the corners at break-neck speed, banging gears all the way!:burnout::3gears: But, in this case, I just kinda drove around. :smirk: I'll get on it after I get all the adjustments made. I WAGed the alignment, and actually got it pretty darn close. The steering wheel came out exactly how I wanted it. Only thing I'm missing is my 8-Track. That's a whole 'nudder thread....:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

Yes, there are a few more tweaks: rocker moldings painted, custom backup light delete plates, center spokes painted a tad darker. But overall, it's about done!

Very very happy with the sound of just the resonators through the exhaust. Here's a quick video and a photo shoot today! Enjoy!!

----Dave,,, No camera mounts??? LOL......Bill S

A12pilot 05-11-2018 12:53 AM

Ha! No....not yet. But their will be soon! :naughty:

That "Little Pieces" is a replica of what Max Balchowski wrote on tape and then struck on the tach so McQueen knew where to keep the needle away from or else there would be "little pieces" all over the set!:burnout: the Hero Car has the residue on there still. I found some NOS masking tape and a "survivor" Bic pen from 1968 to replicate this exact feature! But the tape was one big ball of glue, and the pen was all dried up, so I just used new stuff instead.:biggthumpup::hmmm:

More to come....but not much more since it is just about done! But I at least have to have some more driving footage....maybe even an interview/drive-a-long and in-car camera footage with a well known celebrity! Who will that be? Oh.....details soon. :naughty::naughty:

Cheers:beers:
Dave

PS: please PM me for ideas and leads with car celebrities since I really don't know any:frown:
