Here's another. Labeled as 1967 396.

90 degree outlet fitting on fuel pump and presence of a throttle return spring clip on upper alt. brace would be characteristic of '66 (in this case L34). Thanks for posting Rick!!

There's some contradiction in what it might be. In 1966 they changed the upper alternator bracket (at least in production on big blocks for sure) which gave the alternator better support. This is 1965 style, but there isn't an inline gas filter which I believe BB '65 Vettes had. Exhaust manifolds look correct for '65 L78 or '66 L72. Vette wire/distributor shielding, '65 Vette looking thermostat housing. I guess it's possible it's an early 1966 mock-up from on-hand parts. It's kind-of a mix '65-'66. I wish I could read the part numbers better. I still lean '65 L78.

you can read the fan belt part # did they change the part # between the few years???

I thought it was funny how the engineer or ad guy finished up his description of the 409.

I agree. The file name listed on the archives photo stated it was 67 396 so that is why I listed it as such.

Another shot of the first engine. Looks like L78 on the exhaust manifold but also looks to say PPD L88 (maybe pre-production L88?).

I don't think that's a D Rick, it's an O as in RPO L88. That picture was taken in the Engine Design/Mock-Up room for Chevrolet Engines

----Pete,,,That style thermostat housing was also used on 67 L88 Corvettes as they had the 396 style aluminum radiator. There is also no choke housing on the intake which would make the intake a 65 style but probably hogged out with a stamped Part number......Bill S

That was before he put the 426 Hemi in it with Hilborn injection sticking out of the hood so it would have to be 68-70 time frame. That was my jungle gym growing up. I must have driven that car at 1000 miles, a 1/4 mile at a time with my imagination. He definitely left us with a lot of great memories.

muscle_collector 03-14-2019 11:56 AM

I'll try. We lost Dad in October and I'm not sure how many more pics there are of it. We were never a big picture taking family unfortunately.

My car and I circa 1979.

Wish I still had the hair!

L60-15 Super Chargers and of course air shocks. 15X10's in the back. I really still like that look.

muscle_collector 03-14-2019 05:07 PM

love the look. is that black or dark blue? rallye sport?

BCreekDave 03-14-2019 05:13 PM

Actually Forest (dark) Green. Not an RS...full bumper.

It was scanned image from a Polaroid. Colors are a bit off.

Just out of frame is my friends 1969 Z28. We used to tear it up back then.

bbbentley 03-14-2019 05:36 PM

Much like myself, you have owned your car for a long while.

BCreekDave 03-14-2019 06:43 PM

Yep, awhile.

There are two of us from the old neighborhood that still have our cars from back then. The other guy has a 1970 SJ Grand Prix 4 speed.

Funny what you remember when looking at old photos. It had clamp on Cherry Bombs and I always knew when I was shifting just right it would bang them on the cross member!

Love this Thread!!
Here is a pic from High School parking lot- 1983.
Car was Rally green, white stripes, all orig interior & paint. I rebuilt 302 SBC and it ran mid 13's at 107 mph with 4:10 gear. It was a "CE" block from warranty work within first 6 months as told by original owner. I didn't know what "CE" meant until much later. Didn't care at the time!

My Nova

4 Attachment(s)
Some pics of my first car. I bought it in 1975 after I missed out on a deal for a 69 Camaro. I bought it at the age of 15 before I even had a license. Paid cash for it from money I earned by cutting lawns, shoveling snow and working part time in a party store. If my memory serves me correctly it was around $2,100 +/- $200. I had to have my big brother drive it home for me and then teach me how to drive a stick shift, 4 on the floor. Man I had some good times with that car!

Got an offer I couldn't refuse for my Nova and bought this Plymouth Satellite. It was an okay car but regretted selling my Nova. It was just too big of a car for me, nice back seat though lol!

78 ta

My 78 TA. I bought it brand new as a graduation gift to myself. Paid around $7,600 for it. Those are my 2 younger twin brothers and their friends admiring it in the background. Like a country song I went on to live the American dream, get married have a wife, a mortgage, 2 kids, eventually sell the car and drive a junker to work everyday lol! BTW After about 38 years in 2013 I finally landed a similar 69 Camaro RS like the one I had missed out on in 1975. Good ending and NO I'm not selling it!

Man that photo looks mighty dangerous, especially for the guy under the car. Even for the guy on top a big No-No.

You expect more from Standard, but style points for the pants at least. Figure the feller in the lawn chair has the right idea. Today he'd have the phone out ...

Cool shot!

Ok, what's up with the engine itself? What heads are on that thing?

PeteLeathersac 03-26-2019 11:22 AM

'

It's a Flathead Ford in the '67, there's old threads here about it somewhere in the past.
I forget the whole story but the fella in the shop coat was a Flatty builder of notoriety and car an engineless theft recovery?:hmmm:
