I’m beginning to understand now when guys say life gets in the way of their projects. I’ve always been able to find time to play with stuff. But lately between work and my son(mostly my son), I haven’t had much of a chance to really dig into it and work on the car. I pulled it outside today for a bit and worked on welding in the right side floorpan. I had bigger plans but I guess I can no say it. Life got in the way.
Hopefully I can get the engine mocked back into place for the winter. It’ll let me work on planning out all my pulleys and mounts so it can all fit. I’d also like to get around to pulling the front and rear axle out after I get the shock tabs welded on so I can get it all prepped, painted, and reinstalled so I won’t have to do it again. But being that it’s getting colder in NJ I’m sure it’s all going to take longer. The one picture is just the back end of the car because I thought it looked cool with the Dana 60 hanging there. I also worked the roof a bit to get it straighter from the damage done during blasting. My dad actually came up with the genius idea to put a vinyl roof on it. And to fit the period/look I’m going to call around next week and see if any Mod Top reproduction material is still around/being made. I’d love to use the 69 Dart/Coronet green. But will see what’s still on the market and go from there. Thanks for reading and God Bless |
A vinyl top will hide a lot of imperfections, but the metal is still going to need to be fairly close.
As for material, I WAS going to say you may well only find it at SMS in Oregon, but after going to their web page to get their address for you, I can't suggest you contact them. Most all feedback for them anymore is "stay away". And their BBB report is quite bad too. You may need to get past wanting the mod top material and settle for original appearing fabric. Good Luck with other suppliers, you never know what's out there until you ask. |
I have had good luck with SMS, even recently.

That's good to hear, Jon. As we know, most reviews are only left by the disgruntled, so I was skeptical. It's like trying to decide on a hotel when traveling, from the reviews they all sound horrible...:rolleyes2:

I contacted SMS, they either have or are making a run of Green floral top material. My mom is going to help me measure the roof so I can get it ordered once I know the amount I need. I’m hoping that I can get enough to do the roof, a set of door panels, and cover the top of the dash, but the stuff is pretty expensive(200 a yard). So we’ll see how much I need and go from there.

That will look awesome on your Street Freak

I'm loving this car, and your story. I've had several dealings with SMS, and they are extremely illusive for contact and information. They come across as arrogant until you finally get ahold of someone. That said, they always come through, just not in a timely manner. Plan ahead, wait, wait some more, than be amazed at the product they provide.

Today was fun, my wife and I took Marty to Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic NHRA race. It was Marty’s first drag strip visit. He had fun and enjoyed watching the cars. It’s always cold at Maple Grove.
Came home and my dad and I worked on the car a bit. We moved all the cars around to dig out the engine crane, and was going to stop for the day, but we started moving stuff and pretty soon had the engine bolted into the car. This’ll let me start mocking up the alternator, blower, and fuel pump drives. Thanks for reading. |
Seems to be the way, "cleaning and organizing" go. Once I start moving "stuff" around and wishing I had more room/floor space, I realize the best way to do that is put the danged parts on the car...:smirk:You made good progress.
Protect Marty's ears around vehicles with open headers. It is far easier than people realize to damage hearing in children as they are developing. |
You are a freakin AMC god.
