Coming along.....should be a BLAST to drive!

Just as a quick update: We're stuck in balance purgatory.

The rotator went out to my regular balance guy almost a month ago, and he ran into an issue getting the crank to come into balance--the balancer was telling him he needed to remove metal where there was no metal to remove. Hence, he (/we) sent the crank out to another local shop to have the rear counterweight machined and to get the "dog ear" removed from the flywheel flange to try to get it to come into balance.

Gotta be honest, not real happy about this--it's not uncommon to run into balancing issues when you have a heavy reciprocating assembly, but this one is actually lighter than usual, so the crank should've been a breeze to balance. Once I hear back from balance shop #2 I'll post more updates.

Got fed up waiting for balance shop #2 to get off his ass so I bailed on him.

The crank is now @ George's--which is where I'd intended to take it in the 1st place, but George got sick a month or so back and Gregg (George's son) didn't know if/when he could get to it.

George is on the mend now and everything's moving along again--HOPING to get the crank back this week, Gregg said he'd get on it immediately.

George just called, crank's done...in his own words, "this thing was a bitch to balance" lol. (George isn't one to mince his words)

Time to start assemblin' some horsepower. :naughty:

After more delays, screw-ups and mis-machined parts than I care to mention (but will), the 540 project is finally rounding 3rd and headed for home. With any luck I'll have it final assembled by mid-week next week, then it's off to the dyno.

No, you're not seeing double, and no, this isn't a V16 project. What you're looking at here is the 2nd set of pistons I've been waiting on for the last 2 weeks. While doing final mock-up, I found that the original pistons had been machined for the wrong sized rings. It took a lot more effort than it should have, but the replacement pistons arrived this morning, and I'm happy to report they're spot-on.

Compression ratio will be 11.5-1, just on the safe limits to run on pump gas.

Between mock-up snafus and correcting other's mistakes, it took me numerous trial assemblies to get it to this point--but it's finally short blocked. If there's one guaranteed rule when building an engine like this, that is to leave NOTHING to chance--you have to check EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING!

Trick MOROSO pump with a windage baffle added to the body of the pump which works in conjunction with the MOROSO pan going on this engine.

More next week.

Save for a few small peripherals, it's wrapped up. I'll be calling tomorrow to schedule dyno time.
