Just think.

I was sick last week and did not see it. I was looking what extra weight you are turning with 302 cu in,it is not just a lower first gear. You have a bigger heavy clutch, heavy bigger trans, bigger heavy out put yoke, bigger heavy new[3 inch]drive shaft, and you have a bigger heavy yoke that you hurt the pinion putting on. Now could be the time to think.

Paul,

The clutch is a twin disc { All McCloud} with a much lighter flywheel. Went from a 30LB 11" to an aluminum 12 LB 10.5. The rear/front yoke is bigger and so are the u-joints. 1310 to a 1350. Did break the pinion
threads and nut but all is new. The drive shaft went from a factory unit to a PST 3" almost double the size. The balancer is smaller with less weight so I took allot of weight off the engine.

Every thing I touched, I made better/stronger. It did start up but am having issues with the mini starter. It does not engage some times so I took out and brought back to where I bought it and was checked out. All good and told to add shim. I added one shim...same thing so I added another shim. Same result, so not sure what to do next.

Allot of fun getting to the starter!

If the front joint and yoke is bigger, drive shaft is bigger, trans is bigger, rear joint and yoke is bigger, clutch is twin disc is bigger and you lighten flywheel and all is good I do not see it. Only first gear is lower and no other gear is different in the trans, I think other gears are different too. If you take off parts and weigh them and weigh the ones you put on,then you have something. Going to a lighter fly wheel you have a different dance step on the street and it is not easy, but I guess you know that. Street car or race car are not the same. Help me understand your car that has only a lower first gear, you said. Bigger and stronger for a 302 cu engine may slow the car down. The size of the balancer and flywheel I do not off set the rest of stuff[drive shaft is a lot more] in your mine, biger and stronger is not "the hot set up".

Paul,

M23Z gear ratios are... 2.99:1 – 2.04:1 – 1.47:1 – 1.00.

M20 gear ratios are...2.52, 1.88, 1.46, 1.00

Take off feel will be like 5:09 first gear with the 302...3:73 and my G70 X 14 GoodYears.

Not a race car...street car and much safer, so yes...it may not be up to race car standards

but is a safe car now. Tough to have all the right combinations...don't want to drive around

with 4:88's in the rear. Good for racing but not for a street car. The 302 will do fine with the

M23Z Much stronger/better trans then I had. The 302 never liked the 3:73 with the M20

trans when I took the 4:11's out, but I hope that the M23Z & cross ram will be a better

combo. What I did was best I could with the combination I wanted. It will work just fine

Paul. I did not want the best or the fastest car on the street anymore. Driving to the Grove

is feasible now with the 3:73. One tank of racing gas gets me there and back.

Dave-If you put race gas, a dual disc, and a 12 lb fly-wheel, with all your other parts, then it’s a race car. I found the safest, and easiest way to transport a car is with a trailer. When Paul was younger, we trailer-ed his car and now he trailers my car. You have a new truck that should pull the trailer with no problem and you will be safe. Good luck with your race car. Paul
