Yeah, as period cool as they are , they're still deadly.
I have a group of local friends with Day 2 Cars.....
None of us would ever think about a colored fiberglass flex fan .....other than a wall hanger.

Your Buddie was one of Hundreds and hundreds that met the same kind of demise.....sorry to hear.

A Stainless steel or aluminum fan in great condition is the only safe Day 2 route.

X2 -- my brother inlaw did basically the same thing and took out his left eye. Just like the plane of rotation on a turbine/jet engine -- don't park your behind anywhere close. TAZ

Back in the early-90s, I had a street racing grudge match against my brother-in-law down in Crafton, PA by the Thornburg bridge (Pittsburgh street racers from 25 yrs ago will know where I am talking about). He launched a blade through his newly painted hood. It was an aluminum aftermarket fan that looked like those fiberglass fans (same center section appearance, but aluminum vs fiberglass blades). I think all those aftermarket fans are dangerous - factory or electric is the way to go.

launched 2 of the aluminum fans (bought from Loper's Speed Shop) through my hood on my 70 Z28 back in the day, they did not last long

neither did the fan shroud [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif[/img]

finally went to the factory (73? Z28) flex fan ... it lasted longer but sent one of them through my freshly repainted hood in the early 80's

lots of 7000 plus rpms I guess

the fan blades would crack from use right where they mounted

I'm using a Stainless blade and laminated SS body on my Day 2 Car in lieu of the original aluminum clutch fan.

Its a For Race Use high RPM Fan from 30+ years ago, a NOS unit of unknown (forgotten) maker.
It may be a HAYS....???
With a High Performance, High RPM Belt on an Original Deep Groove W/P pulley and NOS 668 crank pulley........Non of That Reproduction Junk on my Motor at all !

The one issue I saw with my Brother-in-laws car is that he had the A/C pulley set-up where the water pump is overdriven and the WP pulley is smaller than the crank pulley. I never did the math on the ratio, but at 6000 rpm crank speed, that fan could have been going 7500-8000 rpm when it blew apart.
