Bill,
Also note the narrow band white walls and black wheels. Those tires only came on the Super Sport in '61. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif According to the literature, the SS option was available on all Impala body styles except wagons. I think the "two too many doors rule" would still apply. It is an interesting photo for sure. I wonder where it was taken and the purpose for the 2 gentlemen posing next to their cars. Maybe they were traveling on vacation together? Verne https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif PS: I blew the photo up and I believe I can see the column mounted shifter handle in Park, so that would mean it's the 305hp 348 (the only engine available in the SS with a P/G trans) |

I would have to agree. The Jewel and EG Home Center were there for many years, I don't remember Texas Tommy's, I was too young to be out driving around at that time.

Vern, it looks like they're in front of the Colony Hotel in the heart of South Beach, Miami. Why they're posing is anyone's guess.

Re: Old Street Scenes
Just curious....whereabouts on Archer Ave? I see that Gas City sign, but not sure where it was. Heck in the late 70's I was only 8 years old (in 79).
I do remember another Gas City on 55th and Pulaski. |

In addition to the Jewel, the center featured a Woolworth's and the locally owned E-G Home Center among other stores. Barely readable at the corner of the Jewel store is an oval “Burny Bros.” sign, a popular Chicago bakery that had departments in many Jewel stores of the era. The second and third photos are February 1961 views of Main Street, Downers Grove. - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...amily/b251.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...amily/b290.jpg - |
Re: Old Street Scenes
The Gas city was on Archer and Mayfield, just east of Austin Ave. Everyone hung out at Ridge Center which was across the street from Gas City. You would pull out on Archer and give it your best burnout.

"Barely readable at the corner of the Jewel store is an oval “Burny Bros.” sign, a popular Chicago

They were all over this area and had the best baked goods.Jules Burny was a close friend of mine and shot a mean game of Golf as well. WOW!...Main St. Downers G. in 1961. Your 1st pic is looking southbound and looks like it was taken standing on the R/R tracks. You can see Herberts Men store on the left, which just closed it's doors this summer. Your 2nd pic looks like it was taken near Maple Ave.looking northbound,on the west side of Main.. Great pics Dog,where did you get these from? |
