Been a while for an update.........We were going to take the Nomad on the Good-Guys Road Tour last fall........That was the plan anyway.....The tour started in Mooresville, N.C. and ended in Dallas/Ft. Worth.....We were going to drive to Mooresville and have the car shipped back home from Dallas......During the mod's to the car, we had to eliminate the stock Emergency Brake linkage and cable assy due to clearance issues......So...We ordered an E-Force electric E-Brake actuator (Need E-Brake for shipping)......While waiting for the assy to show up I noticed that the A/C system lost it's charge.....Damm!!.........Did some checking and found that the front drive compressor manifold that came with the kit had a leak in it at where the Tube was welded to plate.......Darn........Called Concept one and they said they would ship one out.......well....It came the day we were supposed to leave.......No time to get it fixed so we took the Impala instead.........Meanwhile.......I left the car at Frame-up for Donnie to fix the A/C, install the E-Force unit and replace the Shorty Headers that had some clearance and vibration issues......we ordered some "Real" headers........Hooker long tubes.... When we returned Donnie had the car all finished.........So, it is ready for this years Road-Tour........Also after the new header install and a pulley change (another long story) we got the Supercharger belt slippage resolved....It now makes 12 lbs of boost and made 520 RWHP thru the mufflers........By the way....The Impala got an overall average of 23.7 MPG over 2880 miles........

Very cool! Did you get the seat cover material finally, too?

Still waiting for the new seat to be finished. Imagine that

Your Nomad is so nice.

So...….The story continues...… The seat was at three different upholstery shops over the last 2 1/2 years trying to get a decent job..... Now.....This is a Glide Engineering seat ordered for a 57 Chevrolet...….The upholstery shops (all except the last one, had a issue with the stupid way that Glide designed the pivot arms for the seat backs...….They are about 4" in from the seat sides...….Normal seats the swing arms are outside the cushion (common sense)…….So.. After throwing away two sets of covers that were terrible... I went back to Dave who did the 37 Ford....So... Dave did a great job on the seat except I would have preferred a more rounded form on the top of the seat backs..... Picked it up today and wanted to get it installed right away as we are taking the Nomad on the Good-Guys Road Tour and she wanted a comfy seat in the car...… Well......I get the old seat out and get the new one in and after getting it bolted in I went to raise the seat backs and guess what...……..The seat back frames are 1" per side too wide ……..Great Job Glide.....Here we go again !!! All I want is to be a person that gets what he wanted and paid for that actually fits and works...… I guess that is asking too much...…….Glide Engineering Sucks !!!!!

Unbelievable, and at the same time completely believable. I am shocked in this day and age that so many things just do not fit or work as they should. I feel your pain.
|
I called Glide today and explained what happened and they are going to make new seat back frames to suit and all for N/C...…….. Great customer service after the fact.....They could have told me tough luck......Not the case !!!!!!

Wow...you are so close!!!

Never seen a AC condenser mounted horizontally.
When you think about how they work, with hot gas entering the top and then it condenses to liquid in the bottom third of the condenser and then as pure liquid out the bottom I wonder how it can work efficiently laying down? The liquid refrigerant will just level out horizontally with liquid-gas going out the exit port. |
The only thing a condensor does is dissipate heat to the atmosphere. If you remember the old days of R12 and sight glasses on the receiver dryer low systems would have many bubbles going up the stream - and still would cool fine. Newer 134 systems removed the sight glass because if you filled them until they have zero bubbles they wont cool.

I never even tried the A/C with the condenser mounted like that......After buying the car I put it in the Garage and ripped it apart and did it correctly..... Ken |
Since it pains me to say that the car season is basically over for the year....The refining process will now continue over the fall and winter season.....Couple things I'm not comfortable with...… Ordered a new GM Ignition switch to hopefully solve the intermittent starting issue...… #2... I'm going to bite the Bullet and change out the Concept 1 Front drive set-up(single belt for everything) for a Wegner LSA front drive ( two belt drive) ……. In the 57 the single belt C1 set-up moves everything forward to align with the Blower Belt position...… In this position everything fits, But.…..There is no clearance between the drive and the fans and radiator...… So, in driving the car like we do across the country, if anything would happen to fail …….. the only way to access the components is to basically remove the radiator and or Core support (another reason I was hesitant to take the Nomad on the Road Tour this year)...… Don't want to be in that position..... With the Wegner set-up, there will be another 1 1/2" of room to at least have room to access the Pulley's Etc... One of these things you learn as the process moves along..... Gonna make it more Gooder !!!..... LOL

And so it continues! :)

You must have regained access to the purse.......spend it.

After buying the Glide Engineering seat 2 1/2 years ago...…. It's been a struggle trying to get the foam and covers made to have a comfortable decent looking seat...…. After being in three different shops and finally getting a decent job in the third shop, then finding out the seat was too wide and didn't fit...… I've had it with that seat..... Glide made new seat back frames so the seat would now fit, but, after being on the Road Tour a couple weeks ago and talking to and sitting in Bret Vogel's car...… I have decided to sent the original seat to Tracy Weaver in Nebraska and get him to recontour and work his magic on it as he has done many of these conversions………. Here are some pictures of the seat after receiving it from upholsterer #2 …….What a waste of time and her money !!!

Tracy Weaver does amazing Work :-)
Well done! Dan |
Cool!
|
A couple updates...…. #1.... Took Welds advice and sent the original bench seat out to Tracey Weaver to work his magic to balance it out with contoured Foam and keeping the pattern looking some what stock to match...…
#2...… The intermittent clicking issue when trying to start the car ended up being a connection issue at the column mounted neutral safety switch #3..... the Battery going dead ended up being in the aftermarket ignition switch included in the rewire kit...…… the original 57 Key bezel is still used..... It has Start...Run...off... and Lock on it...…..Unknown to me.... (Probably in the Instructions....LOL )when I would shut off the car and turn the key to the lock position...…. In the new switch it is actually in the Accessory position....When I looked under the dash while fixing the neutral safety switch I noticed that the Dakota Digital modules were lit up...… turn to the off position and everything went out and no more issues...….This Car stuff is Hard !!!! |
Update on some issues that came up........I'll post them just to maybe help others in the future...... I ended up buying Ride Tech upper and lower A arms and their heavy duty stabilizer bar.....The problem I had after a while was the ride quality went away......Hummm!!!!.... In driving the car on the highway, if I had to make a slight adjustment in steering, the car stayed in that direction, when I adjusted back....same thing....So.....I had to continuously adjust the tracking of the car.......So, I was driving the car instead of riding in it...... So, I was at a car show one day and a guy pulled in and parked next to us and he asked how I liked the NoMad.....Told him about the steering issue and he told me the Ball Joints were the problem.........I figured he didn't know what he was talking about the Ball Joints were only a couple of months old and heavily greased.....So I lived with that situation and hated driving the car on the highway.......So.....Last winter I was on Amazon and decided to look up Moog Ball Joints...I bought upper and lowers and took the front end apart .........Now....The upper ball joints that came with the New Ride Tech A arms were pretty much seized in place and the lowers had enough slop in them I could jiggle them by hand.......I had to put a pipe over the tapered end of the upper to get them to move......that's how galled up they were and that's why I had that steering issue....New parts that were greased regularly.....Probably Chinese Junk!!!!!!........Driving it with the Moog parts it is a whole new car and enjoyable to drive now.......That guy that told me it was the Ball joints must have been a alignment guy to immediately recognize what the issue was.....And I didn't pay attention to him because I assumed because they were new they couldn't be compromised.........LOL....
Issue #2 was the car didn't feel like the front suspension had the usual up and down suspension movement.......LOL.......I found out that when I put the new stabilizer bar (powder coated) I forgot to grease the bar......And the new rubber bushings were locked onto the bar and the front end was pretty much locked in that position........1/2 hour later all fixed.......LOL.......Drives like a Cadillac now.....Sheesh!!!!!! |
Glad you got it figured out Ken! :headbang:
|
Ken Kudos to resolving both issues! Those type of issues can be very frustrating...
|
Ken, what product did you use to grease the sway bar? Thanks.
|
I have had more problems the last 10 years with BRAND NEW parts (even brand name) than I have with used parts.
Glad you got is sorted. It is a HORRIBLE experience to put your heart and soul into a project and then be disappointed with the outcome. At least you were persistent enough to get it where you wanted. More pics man. More pics. |
Good thing you caught the stiff uppers when you did. They will, eventually, seize tight and break. Very common problem with the Chinesium ball joints, even in name brand arms.
Happy for you to have overcome the issues making the vehicle unpleasant to drive. |
I agree with Lynn. More pics please!
|
How ya doin Ken?? Good to see ya pop up here!
Memory steer is all too common with replacement ball joints. I'll also add proper torque of the stud into the spindle is a contributing factor of memory steer. I'm glad to out of the parts business, as so much offered today is just junk. |
