This is not true. I had a 69 Roadrunner with ac back in the mid 70's and it was indeed orange. And the original engine

Did you hear of the Jim Taylor collection coming to auction this October? It's got some rare stuff, like a real factory race '55 Type D Jag that wasn't raced, and an unrestored '64 Cobra 289, and a '67 427 Cobra with only 8k miles |

They were painted at the engine plant, so if it was painted wrong that it where it occurred. Perhaps an alternate theory could be suggested that the engine was painted correctly for what it was but the wrong "pick code" (broadcast code) sticker was affixed, allowing it to travel through the assembly process undetected. Gorgeous ‘65 GTO with parchment interior.
Looks like Optional full tint glass, Custom sport steering wheel, radio and outside rear view mirror. Standard inside mirror. Either they elected not to put the single pinstripe back on the car, or it was initially ordered with pinstripe “delete” notification. The painted wheels were not offered in that color, although they look great with the standard hub cap. The tires look wider than what the correct 7.75 x 14 would show. Those exhaust splitters are so generic, and completely wrong. At least they blacked out the hood scoop recess. |

Hat tip to the original concept of this thread. :)

Just trying to parse out all the cities mentioned: Kid is from Anchorage. Car was built in St Louis, but he is picking it up in Flint? AP article is written in Flint? I can't quite make out where the photo was taken. Pedaled his bike "to Detroit" (which, I guess in this context, is Flint)? Looks like it is already registered and plated, and ready to rock and roll. As an aside, my Grand Prix owner manual has a note penned in the inside front cover that says "Merry Christmas Andy, Love Mom and Dad". It was a $5300 car in 1963. K |
