With the introduction of the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang sales went from 607,568 in 1966 to 472,121 in 1967. That was still more than twice as many Mustangs sold vs Camaros sold: 220,906

"We only planned on selling about 400 Z/28s in 1968 - but instead we had 7000 orders. Boy, there are kids out there, and they have money. And when they hear that Mark Donahue cleans up in Trans-Am with a Z/28, they've just got to have one for themselves. In 1969, we plan to sell 27,000. Can you image? 27,000" . . .

Chevrolet General Manager Pete Estes touting strong Z/28 sales figures in the 1968 October issue of Motor Trend magazine

It's an unused photo from the ad company that worked for Chevrolet. That is a pre-production car. The decals were the ad company's idea. They thought Chevy should include them with the Chevelle SS. They are decals of competitors muscle cars. Beat one in a race - put the sticker on the door like WWII fighter pilots used to do. Chevy nixed the idea as it promoted street racing.

Many times, because of timing, the ad companies would get a car to work with to create ads that wasn't a finished product. Some like the Chevelle were cobbled together by Chevy. Some had no drivetrain and had to be pushed around instead of driven.

No they did not.It was a quick 350 cid car they mocked up to look like a Super Sport for these pics back then. The decals on the door are to induce a Red Baron theme and those were his kills.Advertising idea only.
