Re: Chevelle updates
More progress to report, but only a few pertinent pics.
The deck lid is back in place. The tail light extensions are fully assembled and installed for good. Bodyguy also got the bumper gaskets stapled in place on the rear body panel. The rear rims have been painted as well, fronts are to follow shortly. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...1_08200001.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...1_08200003.jpg Hinges are painted in. The trunk will receive the correct spatter paint soon. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...1_08200005.jpg The trunk actually sounds like a new car trunk when you close the deck lid now. I'm so diggin' that. BodyguyS were just starting to fit the rear body panel trim when we left today. I'll be back out Monday-ish to disassemble the lower dash so Bodyguy can get it painted along with the rest of the interior this week. Tentative plans are to get the window molding clip studs installed and have Glassguy come out next weekend to reinstall the glass. More soon. |

Re: Chevelle updates
Boy has this been a looooong week.
I went back to the bodyshop last Monday and got the dash disassembled so Bodyguy could get it painted along with the rest of the interior. When we arrived today, Bodyguy had just started reassembling the freshly painted dash, and I could tell by the look on his face he wasn't getting anywhere quickly. Rachel and I dove in and got the dash reassembled in relatively short order so Bodyguy could move on to installing the car's second reproduction dash pad...which of course, fits only marginally better than the outright garbage pad I got stuck with the first time around. (The original dash will eventually find its way to Just Dashes...had enough of this repop crap) Once the dash was assembled, Bodyguy and I got it in the car and loosely installed, whereupon Bodyguy #2 finished the install. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/VMCP777/B-15.jpg Bodyguy did manage to get many of the window molding clips installed, but there's still plenty more to go. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/VMCP777/D-11.jpg To backtrack a little; I called a restoration house Monday to re-order the correct fasteners for the side emblems to replace the incorrect fasteners I mistakenly ordered last week. As fate would have it, there was some confusion on the order which meant that the parts didn't get shipped until yesterday. Shocking, I know. I called another supplier Tuesday to try to find some used replacement front & rear window moldings and the side headliner moldings--mine were just too battered to save. Again, as fate would have it, we weren't able to source anything in time, so we wound up having to go to a local restoration parts house to pick up $300+ worth of new front & rear reproduction window moldings... Here's the rear moldings... http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/VMCP777/C-14.jpg Do I even need to mention how the initial test fit went? As such, Glassguy wasn't called in for this weekend since the new moldings are going to take some tweaking to get to fit...maybe next weekend, who knows at this point. On the plus side, Bodyguy got most of the interior painting done, got the pass. side glass and the door window fuzzies installed along with most of the side weatherstripping, and he also got the rest of the rear panel trim on, and despite it being repop, he's got it fitting better than a lot of the OEM trim I've seen. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/VMCP777/A-15.jpg So close, and yet still so far... http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/VMCP777/E-10.jpg More later. |

Car looks great, can't wait to see it completely done. BTW, I have to ask; are the body guys in the witness relocation program or something? Every picture you see with someone in it their faces are blurred out (only kidding)

Re: Chevelle updates
Tom;
lol...like I'd ever get them back! Tom + my Chevelle = lots'a and Bill; I don't think the Autogear Muncie would be long for this world with much of that. I'm already considering what to replace it with if (/when) the inevitable finally happens. Steve; Good point, never thought of it that way. Dave; Just a privacy thing for now, some people are uncomfortable having their mugs plastered all over the `net. I'm the same way, which is one reason why so few people on here actually know what I look like. (<~~~ me disguised behind dark sunglasses ) Once the car is done perhaps we'll do a "cast of characters" reveal...except for Rachel, she's way beyond camera-shy, even worse than I. Me putting her pic on the `net = extremely high likelihood of my untimely demise! |

Craig Bartling's already got that name.
How about "Mongo"? I do bear a striking resemblance to him, and I can certainly relate with his philosophy. *EDIT* how in the heck do you embed a youtube video on here now anyhow?? Re: Chevelle updates
Got a call from Bodyguy bright & early this morning--the man is on a mission and we're getting down to the final nitty-grittys on this thing!
While I stay here and hold down the fort, Rachel is once again off to gather some more small odds & ends so Bodyguy can finish putting the nose back on the car. Once the nose is finished, the only things left to do on the front of the car is paint and reinstall the wheel wells and paint the front rims. There's still a little final epoxy painting to do under the back of the car (by the drop-offs) then the gas tank can go back in and the rear bumper can go back on. After that, the only things left to do on the back of the car is install the glass & moldings and drill the hole for the antenna. Once I get the car back, it's down to reinstalling the wiring and the rest of the interior, and that's it! Holy crap we're getting close! Re: Chevelle updates
No video, but here's 3 quick pics:
Stopped at the bodyshop to drop off several assortments of clips & nuts for the emblems and moldings, and a new pair of high beam headlights. Bodyguy and I had just installed the steering column, and here Bodyguy was in the process of installing the firewall plate: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...1_08310001.jpg Front rims painted and waiting on clear (which was being sprayed just as we left) http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...1_08310002.jpg Nose trim mostly installed. There's some minor corrections to take care of on the grill black-out, but that's a non-issue. There's also a tiny chip in the paint at the bottom of the forward edge of the fender that needs touched up, but if these are the worst mishaps that are going to happen at this point, I ain't gonn'a lose any sleep over them. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...1_08310003.jpg More Saturday, hopefully. |

Re: Chevelle updates
Here's a short video I made just after I got the engine off the dyno and in the car. Note that I hadn't made any tuning adjustments to it yet, hence the commentary in the clip:

Re: Chevelle updates
Music to my ears; who needs a stereo when you can listen to that thumpin' motor?

Re: Chevelle updates
No pics today, was running around like crazy trying to get a half-dozen different things done by the afternoon and forgot to grab the camera.
Painting is done under the back of the car and the rear bumper is back on. Dropped off the rest of the interior (carpet, seats, door panels) to reinstall. Surprised me because I wasn't expecting Bodyguy to reinstall that stuff since I'd pulled it out before delivering the car to him, but he insisted I bring it out. Rear antenna is installed. Holy crap is it a gut-wrenching sight to watch that hole saw going through the top of that perfectly painted quarter!!! I thought I was going to (The first Jack Wagon that comes along and tries to "sproing" the rear antenna will rue the day they were born...) New tail lamp harness is installed. Front rims are done and the car's back on all 4's again. Can't wait `till the paint has cured a little more so I can stick those Dog Dish Caps on! (yes, Rachel still hates them lol!) I stuck around for a little over an hour to help Bodyguy today while he was waiting on #2 to arrive. Bodyguy broke for lunch around 12:45, so I headed back home then. I guess BodyguyS are going to reinstall the rest of the interior this week, but they have to get Glassguy out to glue the DS door glass back to the bottom glass channel before it can be reinstalled. I *may* have some more mid-week updates, but it depends on Glassguy's schedule. More soon! |
Re: Chevelle updates
I know how you feel about drilling the quarters. Our 396 car didn't come from the factory with a radio but someone had installed one some time in the past. With fresh factory quarters and new paint, I couldn't bring myself to drill the quarter for the antenna. That was 13 years ago. The stereo sound out the back is much better.
