Bwahaha! I can always count on you Steve-o!

Now, not wanting to throw the towel in just yet, I slapped that harness back in to see what’s what here. Miraculously, the electrical gremlins I had have disappeared! Which leads me to believe that still something is goofy in it, but between Darrel’s key buzzer thingy and taking the harness back out and strangling it like Homer does to Bart, resulted in the weird gremlins going away. However....

It still won’t start and now I am getting 12V during cranking, around 7 at the run position. So that’s normal, but it still doesn’t start. That leads me into the next trouble shooting phase and that’s spark. Gas simply isn’t the issue.

Pulling the plugs, they’re all soaked and black. So they’re all fouled up.:bs: So that’s step one....why no spark? I put the engine back at 10 BTDC and pulled the cap off and here’s what I found doing that; the rotor was nowhere near pointing to #1, it was more toward #8. :eek2: But I had set this exactly at #1 several times since I thought the timing was the initial problem.

So tomorrow I’ll try to start again and see what happens. What I’m seeing is I position it at 10 BTDC, wire it up, it fires right up. Then after a few minutes, it coughs sputters, laughs at me and then dies. If I go through this again and it repeats itself, and I find that the rotor is no longer pointing to that #1 cap position after it get the engine back to 10BTDC, what could it be?:hmmm::hmmm::hmmm: It’ll run and then the timing gets goofey after a few minutes. Keep in mind this engine was built by a guy that has built many, never had any issues, and it’s all good parts in there.

I think I’m getting close....:bs:

Cheers:beers:
Dave

Mismatched distributor driven gear to cam drive gear?

Or a missing roll pin/woodruff key in the camshaft and the timing chain sprocket is rotating on the cam even though the bolt is tight?

A12pilot 03-24-2020 12:14 PM

What I’m leaning on, Steve, may be the pressed on gear/shaft connection on the oil pump intermediate shaft. I’m going to fire it up this morning with new plugs, timing reset, and see if it eventually does the stumble and fumble thing again. If it does, I’ll reposition the engine to 10 BTDC and check the position of the rotor to the #1 cap position. If it’s off, I’ll pull the shaft and see if the gear is slipping resulting in the timing wandering. Stay tuned.....

Cheers
Dave

njsteve 03-24-2020 12:28 PM

I have seen the woodruff keys sheer off on a cam/crank. Could have been a soft one and the cam sprocket is no longer fixed in time to the camshaft. The typical 50 cent part sabotaging a big dollar project.

Keep us posted, I wish I could contribute, but you guys are way above my pay grade.

32KZ 03-24-2020 01:48 PM

Just to throw in, pull your valve covers, keep eye on your valve timing: IE closed when supposed to?

Coughing fuel out the carb? I'd roll it by hand first, eyeball whats going on mechanically, check reference marks. Dont want valves starting to slap pistons.

Woohoo! Success!.....well, success in the fact that I knew anything I could come up with wouldn't be the right answer, so....woo....hoo...

It's all back together and here it'll sit. It's a real shame... such a pretty car with such an evil streak in her. Like a future ex-wife! I'm out of ideas, patience, and interest. So time to just let it sit and move on to the other projects.

Thanks for all the suggestions and well wishes to get this poor girl running, but it ain't happening anytime soon.

Cheers :beers:

Now for my final post voodoo doll, poker move.

You just forget fixing that that frustratin' drivetrain. Just get the body and paint all purdy and I will take it.

Name your price.

I can do the greasy and sparky stuff, I just cant handle bodywork and paint.

I need a fun, NOM car that I can make into a cool, Plum Crazy, Day 2, 1970's street machine. I still have a lot of old Direct Connection do-dads stored away.

Heck, I even got a picture of Miss Direct Connection with me and my old 383 Cuda, circa 1983. Her name was Claudia, if I recall correctly. (This is the G-rated version)

I can honestly say I speak for the entire Yenko.net membership when I say "This thread is worthless without other than PG rated Polaroids!":scholar:

Day two Doo-Dads.. huh? :hmmm:

I think this thing needs a full-on 6.4 / 6spd swap! :eek2::scholar::burnout:

That is, if I have a job by the end of the month!:frown:

I saw Claudia a few years ago at the Mopar Nationals. I would guess shes toward 60 and still a fine looking lady

A12pilot 03-28-2020 02:11 AM

Thanks guys! Ouch, Napa...that’s awful. and cripes, Steve....WTH??? This weekend comes round 192 of fighting the Cuda......wish me luck and I’ll keep you’s guys posted!! Things are going so well on the 507 that I’m hoping it bleeds over to Crusty!

Sheesh Dave, this thread is killing me. I'm rooting for you man.....every time I see there is an "unread post" I click on it with great anticipation. I expect the post will be a animation of fireworks and confetti announcement the greatest victory since Normandy:flag:
Alas, it once again is just like my life as a Cincinnati Bengals fan - high anticipation, followed by extreme disappointment:thumbsdown:

I'm still rooting' for ya!

A12pilot 03-28-2020 10:27 PM

Your rootin' paid off! I have smoten the evil Steve and his Voodoo curse! I have trumpicated the slanderous "Good luck, Dave. I'm sure it'll go well" texts from the Wojinator! Yes, despite these uncoothy and unsupportive shenanigans, I'm happy to report......

SHE'S RUNNING PERFECTLY!!! And tomorrow will be a video of the first time she's moved under her own power since 1978. I'd do it today but after checking things over, forget that I didn't have transmission crossmember bolts and there's just two loosely installed and not bolted down, so based on my experience with this car, I'll wait until I get those bolts installed! :scholar:

So what did it? I decided on trying one last thing and that was to install a Pertronix II, matching coil, and new plugs. Fired right up, running smoothly, and most importantly, its fired up about 10 times today after heating up and cooling down. I think it's fixed!

More to come tomorrow and although I joke, I appreciate everyone's input. Thank you all!! There were several issues here and I'll recap tomorrow since several of you helped on this. But for now, it's time for a Killian's Irish Red, or twelve, to celebrate!

Woohooo!!:beers:
Dave

You gonna do a Charley Lillard driveway burnout?

scuncio 03-29-2020 04:57 PM

That's awesome! In my experience, I usually have to pull the Pertronix OUT and put the points back in before it will run....

A12pilot 03-29-2020 09:36 PM

Here's the initial ride! Once the rain lets up this week I'll be going for a couple drives to make sure everything is groovey, then it'll be burnout time!

Springtime in Texas. Congratulations, Dave, what a relief that is.

njsteve 03-29-2020 11:29 PM

LOL. Gotta love that "tinny" Mopar engine sound. Nothing sounds like a Mopar idling.

If I were to describe it to someone who never heard one before, I'd say it sounds like someone jingling a set of keys at the end of a 30-foot long, cast iron sewer pipe.

:-)

NorCam 03-30-2020 12:59 AM

Charlie would be proud of you marking up that fresh new concrete...but not thinking your wife would be digging it. Always fun to get an old car running again.

Thanks for sharing.

A12pilot 03-30-2020 09:30 AM

YES! FINALLY!!! Let’s see what this all entailed, shall we?:hmmm:

-First major issue to deal with was a bunch of minor electrical gremlins. The key-in-buzzer relay was a culprit causing the blue wire to be powered in the main circuit of the car when the door jamb switch was activated. This blue wire powers the ignition circuit leading to the car not shutting down until you pull the key out. Incorrectly diagnosis was the ignition switch being the problem. This also caused the oil pressure light to illuminate with the key in the ignition and the door open. It also caused, for whatever reason, the Reverse indicator light on the dash to illuminate dimly.:eek2:

-Next, there was the incorrectly made fuel filter which didn’t allow gas to flow through it resulting in a back pressure build up on the fuel pump side. The car would run, use up the gas in the bowls, then die. It wouldn’t start when hot since there was no fuel in the carburetor. As the car cooled, the built up fuel pressure would trickle fuel up and into the bowls refilling the carburetor so after ten minutes of cursing, yelling, and throwing tools, enough gas made it up there to refill the empty bowls to allow it to start. Then it was a vicious circle...:bs: It also lead to me thinking it was the ballast resistor or some other related ignition part that when heated up, would fail.

-And then there’s the single point - dual point issue with the distributors. The dual point rotor phasing is nowhere near where the single point rotor phasing it located. In other words, when the motor is at TDC, the rotors do not point to the same position on the cap. Therefore, the date coded plug wires do not fit correctly, are stretched, and pull away from the plugs. This eventually resulted in lots of popping during the cam break in. Somehow, it all stayed together enough to get it broke it with no issues, but two plugs were brand new when I pulled them to check things out. They basically never fired.

-Two other things I found out recently but didn’t post which adds more issues to what I was dealing with: The tach had an internal short!:rolleyes2: I mounted an aftermarket tach on the dash to monitor things and after the initial mess was all cleared up, on the last go when I finally got it running, I did not have the tach hooked up. After hooking it up, the car wouldn’t start.:hmmm: Took it back and exchanged it for a new one and no problems noted. The plugs were the wrong ones. Package says one thing, part inside was another which resulted in an improper gap setting for that colder plug.

-And let us readdress the single point - dual point distributors again. At this point being fed up with all this nonsense, one last attempt at getting this thing running before I sent it on it’s way over to Ebay, was to swap out the points for a Pertronix Ignitor II, matching coil, and brand new plugs. VRRROOMMM!!!!!!:cool2::3gears:

So again, a big thanks to everyone since the majority of you all hit one of the MANY issues I was having. Basically, there were so many that I think this car should be known now as the “Car that Yenko.net built”!!!!!!

So now it’s time for some much anticipated seat time behind the wheel this week!!!! I mean, what ELSE could go wrong at this point??

Cheers:beers:
Dave
