BIG,

Yeah, that's the stuff! Kind of a shame that big air cleaner hides it. But, big air cleaner means big engine, and if said air cleaner was smaller, then it wouldn't be an A12 car.....no thread....no posts....Darrell would be stuck in Camaroville not being tempted by another make.....Bob wouldn't even give me the time of day....and the list goes on. Man, what was the question?

Cheers

True.. Although I do not see myself restoring or preserving a MOPAR for myself... I wouldnt bet against me doing so on something other than a 'Maro.. Just sayin'.. http://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smi...ech/secret.gif

Thanks, I've never paid much attention to the details on the MoPar wiper units.....I enjoy following along and appreciate the lessons.

Whelp.. Its been 2017 for almost 9hrs now and I dont see any new updated pics... No Rest For The Wicked, you gonna need to Fly Like An Eagle, because Time Is On My Side, but you could end up with No Time; unfortunately Time Waits For No One. But if you had Time In A Bottle then you would have Time but if you look at this as Passing The Time you willl end up thinking Those Were The Days and itll be Too Late For Love for the ole bee..

Steam gun? Check! Glue? Check! Second carpet standing by for when I cut this one wrong? DOUBLE CHECK!!!! The carpet is down and it's starting to resemble an interior again! What about those doors? Well, there's been some set backs, and only a select few know the gorey details, but just know the Beater Bee and me are officially blood blothers. Meanwhile, I did get the passenger side door finished. Gary's car has 53K miles on it, and was parked inside most of it's life so there is very minimal wear on the door panels. As you can see here, after a good cleaning, they're just about perfect!

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-dscn2362.jpg
I can't install the back panels until after I get the headliner installed which will be in about a week or so. It's 24 degrees and everything needs to warm up before I start on the top and headliner. H-Town shuts down when it gets below about 50. Matter of fact, I think the only de-icing truck that IAH has is an old 1972 F-150 Ranger that's half rusted out and may even run on the Type IV deicing fluid that it sprays the planes with

Alrighty!!!! Moving right along!!!!! All I need to do is get the driver's door glass installed and I'll be all finished with doors! The day didn't start out very good. I showed up and there were puddles under the car from the rear, transmission, engine, and raditor. Funny thing? No fluid in the car yet and Bob at Glen Ray still has my radiator! Meh...no matter! Must not be an omen to how the day is going to go. So let's see...quarter glass installed..adjusted.....rolls up, rolls down. Man, I'm cruising!!!! What could go wrong? Nothing! That's what! I laugh at your deadlines!!!! Take THAT peer pressure, tic-toc of the clock, and Mikey with his constant badgering of when the Bee is going to get done!! Let me just take this here door glass, original to the car, and slip a new, overly tight, front felt channel on the, did I mention, ORIGINAL excellent condition door glass? Let's see...a little here...and whoa...a little tight. That's usually a good thing (oh!)......do-dee- dooo.....(push) (grunt)....huh....tighter than I thought....let me move this here....a little silicone spray.....{mmmmppph}...cripes! What the........{hhhuuuuuuummmmppppppppffffffff} there she goooe {SLIP........ BANG!!!!!!!!!!!} And as the last 1/4" size piece of cubbed glass drops from my hands with one hand holding the rear chrome strip and the other holding the vent frame...I'm left with this
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-dscn2372.jpg
....now I need to sweep up 12,000 pieces. Maybe 13,000.....I lost count. Well that's just great......Why do I even bother restoring cars? What's the point of all this??? UGH!!!!!! I got a car leaking fluid that has none in it....I found three tools the other day that I swore were lost forever and they were on the workbench right in front of my face...one stacked on top of another......and now it seems an air line has busted in the shop since all I hear is {SSSSSHSSSSHSHSHSHSSHSHSHSHSHSHHHHHHHHHHH} from the other side of the room! Time to regroup. 2017 has not gone very well so far. Thanks Guys! Jason, I just figured I'd post some restoration woes, since despite the appearance I give that everything is going along swimmingly , it's really not. The ultimate plan here with this post is to proceed to the Haufbrau House next year and regail everyone with my vast stories and take pre-orders for my book: "The Beater Bee: How NOT to restore the American Muscle Car" And I've tried that passenger announcement thing once....ask Woj...it might have been when we flew together that I used my words over a PA. What happened as a result of that? Our airline shut down, the remnants were bought up by another, and we didn't see each other again until 13yrs later!

OK....guests have left, so I was able to sneak the console into the spare bathroom and scrub it down and get rid of the remaining 1969 funk that was left on it. It really cleaned up nice, and after a very light coat of semi-flat laquer interior paint, it seems like I'm spot on with the finish. Best part? After the Pinesol (trademark) wash, my car will smell lemony fresh for a long time!!! The remaining original parts will head off to the platers tomorrow.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-dscn2468.jpg
With towels in place and the suspension hung at it's most hunged travel (hunged travel?) I was able to easily slip the mufflers and tail pipes up and over the Dana with no problems. I was really proud of myself for only scratching five things instead of the planned ten! Nothing is clamped down yet, just loosely fit for now. New correct tips, Q-Clamps, and hangers are enroute along with new glass (date coded), bumpers, console pieces, dash parts, stickers, tags, and various other things that apprarently I didn't know how expensive they were until I logged onto to Citicards (another trademark) and viewed my statement.

Temps are up, so next week is the vinyl top and headliner installation! You'll want to stay tuned for that one! You won't want to miss me gluing my forehead to the roof and see such classic comments as, "Wait :15 minutes before applying? PPffflpp....that's just a recommendation!", and "Uh oh....that's not good..." as I'm trying to remove glue from my neighbor that I just sprayed directly in the face!

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Updates are a coming! I'm just about done with the top and headliner. There might have been some "issues" that popped up during the installion which "may" have resulted in a few things being left in the headliner. And on the top, Im going for more of that "Day 2" look. You know, the one where the car has been left outside after 40yrs and the top is shredded and only adhering to rusted out metal? Well, hey? It's not my fault that the Day 2 look is all the rage now!!!!

Pics coming soon, but I noticed something funny the other day. We were taxiing out in my 767 and we got a flat tire. So, we pulled over to the side of the runway and I ran to the back and pulled the spare out of the trunk. After I installed it, I noticed something eerily familiar to the the spare in my A12......

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...120_060635.jpg

...yellow grease pencil markings.......pink dot by the wheel weight/air stem.......inventory/inspection sticker.......
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...120_060603.jpg

So, this begs the question: Did 767s and A12s come down the same production line? We both break down a lot...parts are horrendously expensive.....and BOTH interiors smell like 10,000 trapped peanut farts! I know.....perplexing

Moving forward... Two big things are done: Headliner and the vinyl top. I started by first making sure I had plenty of things to throw, and a clear path at which to throw said things. Once the flight path and declination was calculated, I laid out a smattering of old, rarely used tools so as they impail themselves into the wall, adjacent trees, and passerbys, I won't be out tools I really need. OK, time to begin!

Just the shoulder belts, belt clip snap, and coat hook to mount up. So, in keeping with keeping things like I found them, there were two pieces of headliner material in the car when I took it apart. One was hanging from the package tray and another was wrapped around the transition braces between the trunk and the cabin. Here's a pic of both of those remnants....

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_5290.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-img_5291.jpg
So you can see how the remnants were placed originally. I've seen these type of remnants in other Mopars I've done as well, and since I need to put them back in the original spot, I used the original headliner and made another set of strips to go back where they belong!

Console done! The pieces fit OK, not great, but I'm going to use some shims and such once I get it mounted up.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-dscn2599.jpg
There...that's better. Now it's looking sharp! I needed one of those tools I sent airborne while doing the top, so I had to take a break and head to Sears Hardware....such setbacks......
I forgot to mention that the sunvisors (I may replace those if an impression doesn't come out by Novemeber), seat belts, door panels, rear interior panels, rear seat upholstery, shifter knob/handle, and package tray insulation are all original and unrestored. I really wanted to reuse a lot of the parts that were in good shape and original to the car. Sort of makes me fell like part of Gary is still in the car!

Package tray in. I was able to reuse the original rear interior molding along the headliner retainer as well as the original molding on the back of the package tray. The tray itself is actually in great shape and I could have reused that too. But there are a few scuffs on it, and that carboard is a pain to fix when scuffed.

Rear bumper going on too. Also, along with that are new tips and clamps. You'll notice a missing tail light. The driver's side is an NOS unit, and the passenger side I'm restoring. As a result, I'm waiting for the bezel to come back from the chrome shop. Once I have that I can mount it up!

Not much back here left to do!

----Dave,,,Only because I have never restored a Mopar, I'm wondering if the holes for the bucket seats are always done the way you have them. I'm so used to GM stuff with flaps covering the bolt heads.......Bill S

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Bill....the holes for seats on Mopars, from what I've seen on the cars I've done, is really just a little slit and the stud is shoved through the opening. I wanted to make my life easier with the seat installation and precut the holes out. The seat tracks have 1/2" thick plastic spacers that go underneath and get sandwiched between the track and the floor.

Top glue was Weldwood Landau Contact cement that Mike posted earlier. Or is that Wilwood? I always get those two confused....no wonder I can't come to a stop!!!! Anywho, I spray the roof and let it dry real good. About 30mins. I then sprayed the underside of the top and let that dry the same. I then came back and sprayed another light coat on the roof and after a 10 minute set up (dried), I laid down the spare vinyl I had to prevent the top sticking until I wanted it to. I then folded the top over just a bit, and started to press the roof down while pulling out the old vinyl under it. All the while, stretching and pulling. It felt like an exercise video! "OK Girls, now pull and stretch, heat and pull, stretch and pull. Who wants a good looking top? Stretch (puff) and pull (huff-puff)..."

A few more random photos of randomness.....we all like photos!!!!!

The lower front splash shield that connect the front bumper to the lower radiator support took a trip to the blasting cabinet and as I was moving the gun across the face if it a part number came out and smacked me in the head like an Italian Grandmom telling her grandson to stop being such a schmuck! Normally, I wipe all my parts down before blasting them. Wait...that didn't come out right... What I mean was that I try and find these numbers before I deriddify the part of old paint and junk. Luckily, as soon as I saw it I stopped. Reflexes of an elephant, I tells ya!

So, of course, since nobody will see it (actually I think you can see this one) I'll replicate it and tell everyone the story of the "lower splash shield part number" that almost got away this November at MCACN. I'm telling you, you won't want to miss this show!

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Beautiful.
My buddy had a guy that was an expert put his top on. The guy was getting ready to spray the glue on with a gun and my buddy said this is fresh paint shouldn't you cover it up. The guy said nope, I have done this for years and not a problem, I control where the glue goes. The guy did put some paper down around the edge to humor my friend. Buddy gets home and wonders what all the black spots were on his car. Yep, glue over spray that now had dirt stuck in it. He was not happy.
